The Annual Meeting of The Minnehaha, CompanyThe Development of Local Mines. The recommendations of the mining- committee of the provincial leg-islature are not many but they are important and in accordance with the resolutions of different public bodies in the mining- districts. A number of new reg-ulations have been added to further protect miners working- in metalliferous mine. Better ventilation will be insisted upon. Every shaft 50 feet deep must be provided with bulkheads and bulkhead .must be within 30 feet of the bottom. Seventy-five cubic feet of air per minute must be circulated throug-h the workings. Much, of the''litigation arising- in connection with the location and holding- of claims has been caused by miners and prospectors neglecting- to renew their licenses at the date of expiration. In order to secure uniformity and to fix the date of expiration prominently, in the minds of the holders of licenses, the act is to be chang-ed so that all licenses expire on May 31. Provision is made to issue temporary licenses covering- the interval between the expiring- of present licenses and that date. ' ' " Another amendment is introduced to make it illeg-al to store powder or thaw powder in a mine. The cost of abandoning- a claim is to be increased to $10. MINING NOTES. The annual meeting- of the Minnehaha Company was held in Toronto recently. President Montg-omery who had visited the property recommended the purchase of a five-drill compressor, and also a. stamp mill after the property was a little further developed. The shareholders adopted the president's recommendations. Directors were elected for the current year. This has been a fairly quiet week in mining circles. There are plenty of mining- men and capitalists in the camp inquiring- for g-ood mining- properties and negotiating- deals but no sales were consummated. There are one or two big sales being- negotiated however with good prospects of a successful termination. Manager MacFarlane has several men doing- good work on the Sunset. Mr. W. L. Hogg- one of the owners of this mine is expected, from Montreal in a few days. A big- plant will be installed on the Sunset in early spring. The big properties are being- rapidly' developed and more then are being- employed in order that the mines may be placed on a shipping basis as soon as the railway is completed. The Jewel Syndicate have twenty- two men at work on the Jewel. They are making good progress. ^*x Klondike and, Shanty Pattern, For Office and Pocket Use , ,, SMITH & McRAE, Books, Statiotieiy, Wallpaper, Notions and Fancy Goods, GREENWOOD, B.C. ^^ Atthe Old Ironsides the, air shaft is being-sunk from the 200 to the 300-foot level and exploratory work is being- carried out from the working- shaft. An upraise is being- cut from the 136 foot drift west from the tunnel. The upraise is now in 40 feet and has about another 100 feet to run. , The drift from which the' upraise has been started leaves the tunnel at adistance of 340 feet from the mouth. The tunnel is in ore 340 feet, the drift 'is in ore 136 feet; the upraise is still in ore 40 feet. The tunnel crosscuts the ledg-e, , the drift runs at rig-ht angles to the tunnel aiid the upraise when completed will probably be all in ore 140 feet to the surface. It is interesting- to calculate the number of tons that are in the block, of which the tunnel, drift and upraise are three of its dimensions. ^ J. B. Moody of Camp McKinney was . in the city for ,a few days this week. He leaves to-day for the East to float ' some Camp McKinney and Boundary Creek properties in which he is interested. Mr. Moody.reports that Camp McKinney properties are being- rapidly developed and the outlook for the camp is of a most encourag-ing- nature. Alexander Dick has been experting- the Ruby this week. This property was bonded to him a few weeks ag-o and since then the property has been steadly developed. There are two shafts,,one 30 and the other SO feet, a drift 60 feet in length from which a w inze is being- sunk. ," Fitz Cirkle, the mining- expert has examined the B. C, Winnipeg- and Golden Crown mines. He intends visiting- all the working- properties in the district. At the Mother L/Ode, the big well timbered working- shaft is rapidly increasing- in depth. The big plant is working- smoothly. J. M. Scrafford has everything- in ship-shape "at "the "'B. They have uncovered strong- veins of rich free" milling ore. There are several men at work on the King- Solomon, Copperopolis, Mag-nolia and other Copper camp properties. At the Winnipeg-, the men are drifting en the. big-ore chute recently discovered at the 300 foot level. E. C. Brown will shortly apply for a crown grant for the properties in the Marg-uerite group. - " There are three men sinking a shaft on a vein of rich ore on the Helen adjoining- the city. Work will shortly be resumed on the Last Chance in Skylark camp. CIVIL SERVANTS. Government Employes Will be Kept Out of Politics in The Future. The government has introduced an act to amend the provincial elections ' act. The principal amendment is one which bars civil servants and others from exercising- the rig-ht to vote. The clause reads as follows : "No Judg-e of the Supreme or Country Court, no Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff, no employe of the Provincial Government who is in receipt of salary of at least twenty-five dollars per month, no sailor, marine or soldier in the Imperial service, and no officer in the Imperial service on full pay shall be entitled to have his name placed upon the Register of Voters for any Electoral district.", This does not include school teachers. They will still have the right to vote. A BIG REAL ESTATE DEAL. Three Copper Street Lots Soli Yesterday For a Large Figure. Each succeeding- day bring-s a new record as far as the sale of Greenwood real estate is concerned. W. G. Gaunce negotiated a sale yesterday .which carries the big-gest prices yet paid for Greenwood lots. The purchasers are Messrs. Wallace and Miller of Nelson, B. C. ' The lots acquired by them are 1,2 and 3, Block 3 at the corner of Copper and Centre street. The two corner lots were owned by W. B. Paton and the adjoining lot by W. G. Gaunce. The price paid was 55,450. Mr. Paton purchased his lots a few months ago for 51,700. His .share of Yesterday's sale is 54,000. THE BOUNDARY CREEK TIMES. / H. A Strong Argument by a Prominent Rossland , Barrister. Mr. Smith Curtis, a prominent Rossland barrister arid one of the principal shareholders in the King Company owning- the Oro Denoro mine in Summit camp, was interviewed by the Montreal Gazette during- his recent visit.in the east. Speaking of the Kettle River charter Mr. Curtis said : " The feeling- is very strong- in favor of granting- the charter to Mr. Corbin. This railway will tap a rich mining- re- . g-ion in Washing-ton, notalily Republic or Eureka camp, and make it more or less tributary to Canada. With a smelter at Grand Forks, .which has in a pre-eminent degree all the natural requirements for large metalurgical works, a very larg-e amount of ore from Washington would he treated iu our province. It would also give competition to the entire Boundary country and the value of such competition out there is to be seen at Rossland where Mr. . Corbin's Red Mountain Railway, by giving a lower transportation rate for ores and enabling- the EeRoi-people ,to erect their smelter, was an important factor in saving- the situation when the mining- share collapse1 canie twenty months ag-o. ' " The promoters of the Kettle River Valley Railway offer to expend for labor a million dollars in our province, and a half a million more in equipping- it with steel rails-a permanent addition of $1,500,000, to our wealth and g-ive us the admittedly great benefit of competition." "But don't you think it will be defeated ?" " Well, if it is, a very bad impression will be created in the West, for it would be of great benefit to Montreal and other eastern wholesalers and mine owners.' Assuming that it enables some-American goods to be sold in the Boundary country, this will be far more than counterbalanced by the greaily increased consumption due to increased population which will accrue from this competition." REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. Several Lots Were Sold During The Past Week. Real estate has been very active during- the week: In addition to the Barrett block, J. R. Miller purchased H. R. Eliott's house and lot on Silver "street for $1,450. E. A. Bielenberg- purchased from E. Mottlton-Barrett the two storey-log- dwelling- in the Sutherland addition. Messrs. Smith & Mc- Rae sold their Copper street lot to Doc. Raymond. The price paid was $2,100. This is the highest price yet paid for a Greenwood business lot. Mr. Miller also purchased a few lots in Midway and six lots in McKinney. M. W. F. Smith of the firm of Smith & McRae has purchased a lot near the court house on which he will erect a dwelling-. W. J. Harris and A. H. Black have been working-on the Don't Know claim in Smith's camp. They have sunk ah eighteen foot shaft on an eighteen inch vein of- rich copper and silver ore. M. The fire department with the assistance of Mtmroe's fire extinguisher succeeded in checking the fire before much damage was done. The work on the Golden Crown, Old Ironsides and Knob Hill and the Brooklyn is being vigorously prosecuted and a good showing made each week. At a meeting of the firemen, held Thursday evening, it was decided to ask the council to exempt volunteer firemen from the payment of the road tax. H. E. They saw all the Brooklyn freight loaded before leaving there. One six and two four horse teams reached Greenwood yesterday with freight from Brooklyn. Mr. McDonnell stated that the road was in good condition and that ail freight routed this way would be handled promptly. The by-law confirming the agreement between the City and the Boundary Creek Telegraph and Telephone Company was endorsed by the ratepayers Wednesday. Considerable interest was taken in the voting. A few of the electors believed a twenty-five years' franchise too long and voted against the by-law but the majority of the ratepayers believed that it was in the interests of the city to encourage a new company to enter into competition with the Nelson & Vernon company which had unusual privileges granted to them by the legislature before the city was incorporated. The by-law was carried by a vote of 39 to 13. The company intend to give a contract for the poles immediately and expect to have their system extended to all the camps within six months.'
