It is a common everyday question about roadvvork ,and how much money there'is available for it. The question would have been more readily answered if the people had taken precaution , some years ago to have opposed the McBride government in the fleecing of the province through the Pacific Great Eastern Rail- ft way deal. The parliamentary inquiry at Victoria during the last session demonstrated plain ly^that the . whole deal from first to last be- tween the McBride government , and these millionaire railway "builders was.to rob the public. The Pacific-Great Eastern, Railway has again been unable to meet its payments, the company having defaulted on the fourth payment of interest the amount will now have to be put up by the Provincial government. It amounts to $423,000, which will bring the total amount the company has been unable to pay to $1,476,827. This is certainly a nice sum that the taxpayers has had to pay and if this money was now in the treasury and to be had for roadbuilding and other development work in the province things would look a little brighter than they are at present. , o O 0 o o Anglo-Saxon and Norseman. How great a part Norway has played as an ocean carrier in the present war, and how ruthlessly her ships have been sunk by German U-boats may be inferred from the fact that in London alone more than 400 Norwegian sailors were recently assembled from torpedoed merchantmen. At the banquet held in their honor, Commodore Halsey, for the occasion representing the British Admiralty, delivered a speech in which he, amongst other things, said: "We only need to read history to see how closely related are the Britons and the Norsemen, and. we Britons are proud of this relationship. I feel also sure that you Norsemen are proud of having the same ancestry, as we. From whom has England her qualities as a seafaring nation? The answer is without doubt: From the Norse ancestors, who from the: 9th to the 13th century ruled the! seas. These-people founded j colonies in the north of England, in Scotland and in Ireland. The Orkneys, Shetland Islands, Hebrides and the Faroe Islands were completely peopled by the Norsemen. The Isle of Man was Norse for centuries, and Norse vikings reigned as kings of Publin. I believe that Norse sailors, under the leadership of Leif Erickson, were the first to cross the Atlantic and discover a new world. From the great viking Rollo descends, the first of the'Norman kings of England, William the Conqueror. "It is a source of pleasure to us that a British princess, Queen Maud, is wedded to the sailor king of Norway. "The men who, in early days, brought Christianity to Norway came from England and Ireland, and from England has Norway her parliamentary form of government and other systems and impulses that have led to the resurrection of Norway; and I believe I am right in saying that England was first to acknowledge Norway a modern power. For a thousand years and more have friendly relations existed' between Great Britain and Norway which 1 trust shall not be broken." O O'i- o ." o"'. o -WHY ARE THEY SENT? Lieut.-Col. A. L. Bonnycastle, who has justreturned from England to Winnipeg after taking the 200th Battalion overseas, states there are 27,000 Canadian soldiers waiting in England at the present time to return to Canada. The nfen have been dis-, charged from service on account of wounds,' physical unfitness, age and other causes. , Only a small percentage of this waiting army are men coming home on furlough. According to the Col. every Atlantic liner is crowded, making it difficult to bring the men across with despatch. There are colonels sufficient in number in reserve camps to form a battalion. They are all drawing pay and doing little service. No officer over 35'years of age is allowed to cross to France. Few officers under that age go over, as promotions are made from men in the fighting ranks. The latter statement of the colonel is of interest/ it is only right that the man who has endured the knocks should be promoted. If officers over 35 years of age are not allowed to cross to France, why send them over- sea's at all? Latest From Germany. The latest from Germany .is to the effect that the Huns are now chewing on wood flour. The flour is made from trees and is being served out for human consumption, at first it was only intended for cattle. The/director-general of operations in the British war office, Major-General F. B. Maurice, made the remarkable statement in a recent interview that the British have not lost a single gun on the west front since April, 1916. The general also referred to the fact that to the outside world it might appear that the British were making slow progress in their attack on Lens, and he explained the situation thus: "Lens is an intricate mass of mines and buildings which render it a difficult business to carry out a direct infantry attack. For this reason Field Mar- shall Haig has been taking advantage of the British superiority in artillery to prepare theway for the infantry. But we are now beginning to make the town an uncomfortable place for the Germans, and I think we shall have them out soon." ' o o O o o It is reported that the Kaiser has invited neutral ambassadors to meet in conference today in Berlin. It is to be hoped that if this conference is to be the means of sending out German peace proposals the Kaiser will notbe allowed to suggest the preface: It will be remembered that the i i last peace proposals by Germany received scant consideration by the Allies, chiefly on account of the bombastic utterances of the Kaiser. Here is one of,the Kaiser's proclamations to his army and navy: "We have been victorious in all theatres of war, on land and on sea. The greatest battle was our victory at Skager- rak (in which the German fleet retired to its base arid left the British in command of the sea). The gallant deeds of our submarines have secured for my navy glory and admiration for ever.- God also in the future will be with us." The Kaiser could hardly .say more if the Britfsh navy were at the bottom of the sea. o'' 6- om '-O. :-o WEALTH OF THE CZAR. ENEMY'S POWER WASTING AWAY. - The present reinforcements of the German army, according to a correspondent of Heuter's Agency at the front, consist of youths attaining militury age and wounded from the hospitals. The former class provide fifty thousand monthly and the latter fifty thousand. The Germans have already called up part of the 1919 class, while the 1920 class, who are . youths of seventeen, have been summoned .for medical examination. The 1917 class, which has been fighting since the latter part of 1916, form from twelve to fifteen per cent of the infantry units at the front. The 1913 class, already strong: ly represented at the front, forms the majority of the reserve.. The 1919 class is being called up and the enemy may send this class into the field this year, and so follow the undesirable course adopted after the Somme battle. The German casualty lists for May show that 12 per cent belong to the 1917 class, 2.4 per cent to the 1918 class and. a few to the class of 1919. , ,; . s i A French student estimates that the enemy must replace losses at the rate of 300,000 a month, but even putting the number down at 200,000 the Kaiser can not make the number good by any manipulation of the younger class. His army strength, both actual and potential,, is decreasing.. His "effective man power was diminishing rapidly from June last year His maximum man power has been reduced this year and is wasting weekly. NOTICE. .., -. This fact was-> established at the' Prince Rupert exhibition last year when farm produce from Bella Coola Valley carried away over twenty first pi-izes. OELLA COOLA and the surrounding country possesses wonderful wealth in timber, as yet almost entirely undeveloped, and perhaps at no other point on the Northern Coast is there the same opportunity for a remunerative investment as in a saw mill at Bella Coola. The usefulness of the submarine, as this war has demonstrated, is sharply inherited by its inherent limitations. It has not proved formidable against armed naval ships and is no substitute for them. The British navy would long ago have been destroyed if the vague notions of laymen regarding the submarine were even approxin-atc-ly true. The underwater craft aceom plished nothing in the great fight off Jutland and has only a few naval craft to its credit, and these added in the earlier stages of the war. $1 a Year every Saturday at BELLA COOLA, B. m:n HOE 3 0 THE two principal reasons * why you should buy "Shamrock" Hams, Bacon, Lard, etc., are: FIRST There is none better. K. and now on leave for ten days, have already spent three of them and I am having a pretty good time, also feeding up and recuperating in general and giving my nerves a rest, as you will see by my writing they are not in very good shape; got my leave next to the sergt.-major owingto my good record, I guess. Have been all over London and seen places of interest and still there are places I would like to goto. You wouldn't think there was a war on here at all, lots of grub and everything. "I can just imagine what Bella Coola looks like these days. Spent my birthday coming over from France to England, so did not do so bad. Greetings to all. (Signed) "J. L. Nygaard." 9 j C (Elmrrit Notfr? It is a common everyday question about roadwork and how much money there is available for it. The question would have been more readily answered if the people had taken precaution some years ago to have opposed the McBride government in the fleecing of the province through the Pacific Great Eastern Railway deal. The parliamentary inquiry at Victoria during the last session demonstrated plainly that the whole deal from first to last between the McBride government and these, millionaire railway builders was.fo rob the public. The Pacific%reat Eastern Railway has: again* been unable to meet its payments, the company having defaulted on the fourth payment of interest the amount will now have to be put up by the Provincial government. It amounts to $423,000, which will bring the total amount the company has been unable to pay to $1,476,827. This is certainly a nice sum that the taxpayers has had to pay and if this money was now in the treasury and to be had for roadbuilding and other development work in theprovince things would look a little brighter-jthan they are at present. How great a part Norway has played as an ocean carrier in the present war, and how ruthlessly her ships have been sunk by German U-boats may be inferred from the fact that in London alone more than 400 Norwegian sailors were recently assembled from torpedoed merchantmen. At the banquet held in their honor, Commodore Halsey, for the occasion representing the British Admiralty, delivered a speech in which he, amongst other things, said: "We only need to read history to see how closely related are the Britons and the Norsemen, and we Britons are proud of this relationship. I feel also sure that you Norsemen are proud of having the same ancestry as we. From whom has England her qualities as a seafaring nation? The answer is without doubt: From the Norse ancestors, who from the 9th to the 13th century ruled the! seas. Thesexpeople founded; colonies in the north of England, in Scotland and in Ireland. The $1.00; believe that Norse sailors, under the leadership of Leif Erickson, were the first to cross the Atlantic and discover a new world. For a thousand years and more have friendly relations existed* between Great Britain and Norway which I trust shall not be brok en. WHY ARE THEY SENT? Lieut.-Col. A. L. Bonnycastle, who has just returned from England to Winnipeg after taking the 200th Battalion overseas, states there are 27,000 Canadian soldiers waiting in England at the present time to return to Canada. The men have been discharged from service on account of wounds, .physical, unfitness, age and other causes. Only a small percentage of this waiting army are men. coming home on furlough. According to the Col. every Atlantic liner is crowded, making it difficult to bring the men across with despatch. There are colonels sufficient in number in reserve camps to form a battalion. They are all drawing pay and doing little service. No officer over 35 years of age is allowed to cross to France. Few officers under that age uo over, as promotions are made from men in the fighting ranks. The latter 'statement of the colonel is of interest, it is only right that the man who has endured the knocks should be promoted. If officers over 35 years of age are not allowed to cross to France, why send them over- seas at all? . - . O .0:0 C C Latest From Germany. A French student estimates that the enemy must replace losses at the rate of 300,000 a month, but even putting the number down at 200,000 the Kaiser can not make the number good by any manipulation of the younger class. His army strength, both actual and potential, is decreasing. His effective man power was diminishing rapidly from June last year His maximum man power has been reduced this year and is wasting weekly. Province of British Columbia.
