The majority of builders, architects and contractors of Vancouver state*em: phaticalfy: "Not for;years.*' One prominent firm of local architects ' stated the present position ot. the building situation as follows: Since ^the first of September there has been a pronounced depression in the building industry, as in many other industries. But ,it .has not reduced prices of either materials or labor. Builders and achitects might be expected in their own interests io encourage building-by declaring present costs to be permanent! POLICE STATION SOON ~:6ity'"Building* Inspector Bird has been instructed to report on the advisability'oE demolishing the old city police station building on Powell St., and will submit a recommendation to tho city council at its meeting today. What the recommendation will be it is not hard to guess, as Dr. F. T. Under- hiil, city medical health ofiicer, has. already condemned the building as unfit for human habitation, and from che many peculiar exterior angles shown in the walls and roof of the structure -teat some .33 years ago was :he -city's second city hall, the city will have to start demolition work soon."on it, or the building will fall dovn-itself. tThe only problem. In connection with the building which confronts the city council is the fact that the an- S cient structure hats been used' for storage purposes. Tools and equipment for street cleaning and waterworks shop plant are stored there. Where to find storage space when the building is razed is all that has prevented demolition Leing ordered long.ago. It is probable that a suggestion made by Aid Joe Hoskin will be adopted and storage space secured under a portion of ..the Georgia viaduct by closing up the sides under the bridge) in a section near the east or Main street end. :•.';■.
