Packard Rushes Pyrene Protection to Growing Merchant Fleet. Fire must be kept out of the great shipbuilding 'plants now rushing" our merchant ships to completion. When the Pyrene Manufacturing Company of New York received an order for, 1500 fire extinguishers to be delivered to the American International Shipbuilding Company of Philadelphia, it realized the importance of getting.the shipment' to • destination 'with utmost speed. • ' . The railroads between the two cities were too congested to accept the extinguishers for shipment even by express. * Cross-country ^'delivery was decided on, and within ninety minutes after the order was received, the Pyrene Company's four-ton Packard was loaded and under way. Summed up by the Pyrene Company, the performance of the Packard was "a perfect run." The Pyrene Manufacturing Company also operates a six-ton Packard in inter-city service. The giant truck hauls supplies from the brass foundries in Connecticut to the factory in New York, and delivers fire-fighting apparatus to many ports on the Atlantic seaboard. Pennsylvania Packards Prove Their Power In a Remarkable Test. Moving a thirty-five-ton load by motor truck is a considerable job on a level street, but when the route stretches over the hilly roads in the neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the task' becomes a real hauling feat. Consequently, when R. H. Cunningham & Sons, contractors of Turtle Creek, Pa., undertook the task of moving a hugessteam shovel drag link from Turtle Creek to a coal mine located in the mountainous country four miles distant, they realized their Packard equipment was to have an unusual opportunity of demonstrating its -reserve power. From the Union Railroad at the Greensburg pike the massive piece, of machinery was unloaded, by means of a wrecking derrick, onto a staunch trailer. Then, hauled :by a fleet of Packards, the seventy-thousand-pound loa:d was started overland. A-Test of Power and Brakes. Several sharp grades were encountered. At times it required the ,motive power of eight mighty trucks''in tandem . to pull _- the „ ponderous machine; on some of the down grades This latest demonstration of their remarkable stamina has made even keener Packard enthusiasts of the owners. it was necessary fpr two Packards to hold back the' load to, prevent it from crashing into the trucks ahead. Packard brakes* were given a chance to show their trustworthiness in circumstances where failure would have spelled disaster, and the spectacular procession\reached, its goal without accident or delay. The Cunningham "Company, knowing the dependability and operating economy J of Packard', trucks,.- have used them exclusively for some time. FROM THE MINE TO PLANT VIA TRUCK * Early last spring, the Allegheny Plate Glass Company, in common with many other manufacturers'. was threatened with the prospect of having to shut down its plant at Glass- mere, Pa., because of inability to get coal. The railroads could not supply them. Largely as an experiment the company started to haul coal direct from mine to plant with a five-toi? Packard truck. The method proved very practical, for the truck was able to haul as much as 180 tons in a crajr, sufficient' for the needs of the plant. After several months of continuous operation it has been found that the truck not only is more efficient than the railroad, but more economical. What the Ledger Shows. During' the month of October, the total cost of operating the truck, "including a depreciation charge at the rate of 20 per cent, a year, amounted to $3.3.50. In this" period the big Packard hauled ,2686 tons pt coal, averaging. 110 tons daily.' The cost of hauling by truck was_$.128 per ton. The freight rate from mine to plant j is $.268 per ton, making a total saving _or the month.of $376.0_ through operating the truck. , ■> "This is not the maximum that the truck is capable- of carrying," says the Allegheny Company. -'"We are governed by conditions at the mine .which allow us to operate the truck cnly. eight, hours a day . instead .of ten hours." BEGG MOTOR COMPANY LIMITED 1062 Georgia St. W.
