In these ultra-modern' days when automobiles are getting even more numerous and just as common a.s bicycles during the years of the bike craze, there is hardly a day goes by without from one to three permits for small garage buildings to house one car are taken out at the office of the city building inspector Fully 75 per cent, of these permits are taken out by the owners, who are in about that proportion of have saved considerable trouble for himself if he had to build another garage along somewhat similar lines. He also generally perceives where, he could have ordered his material to better advantage and not had so much scraj) lumber left over that is of little use for anything except as kindling in the family range. These amateur garage builders generally give the cost of the structures as from ,$50 to $85. In the majority of cases it is quite apparent with lumber at its present prices, that they have not allowed anything for then- own labor in erecting the home for their family flivver. When a contractor takes out- a permit, on the other .hand, he generally gives the cost at from $100 to $150, depending on the size of the garage, and in that respect he is generally about right in the ultimate cost, counting in the labor of erection. At present it, costs the average amateur builder from $45 to $50 for the material to build a garage 10 by 16. On the authority of a well known building expert, it is stated that this material could be sold in cut, ready- to-erect form for $50. and ample margin left for a good profit for any firm that would undertake the thing on a large scale, using millends and short lengths that are unfit for shipping purposes. While it might do a few contractors out of a few days work, this plan would be a boon for hundreds of amateur builders who would find the ready-to-erect garages' a great saving of time and material. That there is a steady demand for small garages which is bound to continue for some, years as long as the airplane does not displace the automobile cannot be doubted. For the past three years, despite wartime conditions, garage permits issued at fhe building inspector's office have averaged at least a couple a day. And-if the ready-to-build garage was available no doubt many more would be built.
