After\nrepeatedly dropping easy catches\nand frequently hucking unstable,\nwayward passes which my teammates had no chance of catching;\nmy pre-session visions of innate\nUltimate talent were cruelly\ndashed on Jericho turf field.\nFortunately, the UBC Ultimate\nclub members were thoroughly\naccommodating. They accepted\nmy many shortcomings and made\nme feel very welcome. The players' response to my performance\nwas, in many ways, the antithesis\nof that of our Video Editor, Tim\nHoggan, who found my attempts\nto play Ultimate relentlessly\nentertaining. I, with my limited\nknowledge ofthe sport, was\nincredibly impressed by the level\nofthe men's team that I practiced with, yet I was surprised to\ndiscover that this was only the\nB team.\n\"We have two parts: a competitive \"A Team\" for both men\nand women that compete against\nUS schools for a place in the US\nUltimate Association National\nChampionships,\" said club secretary Alex Hackney.\n\"The second part ofthe club is\na less competitive \"B Team\" that\nattends tournaments in the Pacific Northwest.\"\nThe A team is well-ranked, but\ncosts more than the B team as\nplayers have to cover travel, hotel\nand tournament costs. However, to\njoin the club itself costs only $15 so\npractice and expertise are accessible to almost anyone that wants to\ntry their hand at the game.\n=HOTO TIMOTHY HOGGANfTHE UBYSSEY\nCheck outthevideo atyoutube.com/\ntheubyssey.\nThis structure allows anyone\nto play, even someone as terrible\nas myself, and gain skills. Players\nwho develop well then have the\noption to commit themselves yet\nfurther and play at a higher level.\nThe session that I attended\nconsisted of a gentle warm-up,\nbefore several drills, mainly\nfocused on beating you 'check'\nto pass to a teammate. After\nseveral other technical drills\nthat I embarrassed myself in\nwith alarming regularity, we\nmoved into some small-sided\ngames. Here the talent of those\nat the session were very visible.\nFantastically accurate passes,\nas well as well-timed catches\nwere all the rage. I did manage to\nruin an excellent move from my\nteam by fumbling an easy catch\nin the end zone, but, in my mind\nat least, I redeemed myself by\ncatching a later one. Ten points\nto Gryffindor.\nThe evening was thoroughly\nenjoyable. Despite not having any\nskill, I felt welcome: the players that I trained with had an\nexcellent sense of humour and I\ngot the impression that any new\nplayer would be given a good\nchance to play and improve.
