Guest Editor, chuck Coon.\nt\nBack Again\nThe principle of freedom of expression,\nWon through tjhirty-five years of determined\nendeavor has again been upheld by the student body.\nAs an individual, I am deeply grateful to\nthe students who turned out Thursday afternoon to defend a principle which I have\nfought to maintain and which, I sincerely be-\nieve, they bold as tenaciously as I.\nlam equally conscious, however, of the\nmoral obligation in^oaed upon me to see\nthat lhe rigfat accorded tne is exercised towards its fitting and proper end: the free dis-v\ncussiem of iaeues vital *\u00C2\u00A9 * -university.\nThe issue, as first raised, was clearly\nbased on the defence or the abrogation of that\nprinciple; yet it would be folly to deny that,\nunderlying it, there was the current of dis-\nattraction with The Ubyssey which attaches,\ninevitably to a volunteer organization in the\npublic eye.\nI personally, and the student body as\na whole, I feel, owe a tremendous debt of\ngratitude to Mr. Frank Martin, the president\nof the Agricultural Undergraduate Sooiety\nwho stepped into the gaping breach between\nlhe Editorial Board of The Ubyasey and members of Student Council on Wednesday after\nnoon.\nHis calm and quiet persuasiveness led to\na full discussion of the underlying issues and\nto an almost unanimous agreement on a\ncourse of action.\nThe most immediate and practical result\nof the discussion was an implied agreement\nthat the \"ghost\" staff recruited by certain\nmembers of cotinpil to take over The Ubyssey\nwill come and, work with the present staff\nin an effort to produce a better newspaper.\nIf such a happy situation materializes,\nit will make possible the adequate implementation of the other recommendations of the\nconciliation committee: the establishment of\na three man staff devoted exclusively to writing editorials and appointment of a full-time\npersonnel manager, to keep the organization\nworking smoothly. ijk | *\nNeither of these schemes has been possible in the past for the simple reason that we\nlacked the trained staff essential for their\nsuccess.\nHowever unfortunate the ivhole proceeding, we may be thankful that they ended on a\npositive note.\n-LES ARMOUR.\n/\nAnd Now A Merry Xmas\n*> This has probably been the most eventful period in the history of the university\nsince the days ol Grant Livingston, four years\nWe have seen Students Council beset\nby diverse opinions on several matters, we\nhave scon the administration standing firmly\non the \".uestipn of a fee raise, we have seen\nthe faculty asserting its right of discipline\nover students.\nWe have also seen the Ubyssey vigorously, and not too carefully, attacking all .these\nconditions.\nThis has resulted in stirring nip the students to a degree that most of us have never\nseen before. Even the best of friends have\ntaken different sides on these questoins.\n*\u00E2\u0080\u00A2\nInterest in the activities of student government has never been so high.\nBut looking back over the events of the\nGUEST EDITORIAL\npast semester in a somewhat detached way,\nit can be seen that coming out of the mire\nof all the arguments, is evidence of return of\ninterest in the central government of the\nAlma Mater Society.\nWe have had the tendency in the last\ncouple of years to be far more interested in\nthe organizations which form part of student\norganization rather than in the students as a\nwhole.\nWe can only hope that in the dbming\nyear that this' revived interest in student\ngovernment will continue.\nIn the meantime, may you be able to\nguard yourselves against the inevitable distractions of the next few weeks so that you\nlike Mac Arthur, will come back.\nFrom the editorial board: A MERRY\nCHRISTMAS.\n7* 71*\n(tetters te the Editor should\nbe restricted to 110 words In\nlength.
