" mm\nNURSING TODAY\nNEWS ITEMS\nNEW FACULTY RECEIVE GRANTS\nFour new members of the School of\nNursing faculty have been awarded Humanities and Social Sciences Grants for research projects.\nThe grants, which totalled $5,500, go\nto faculty new to the university to encourage them to begin research during their\nfirst year at UBC.\nGrants went to the following faculty:\nMARILYN E. DEWIS and VALERIE LESLIE\nfor a study of spinal cord-injured adolescents' perceptions of their body image and\ndescriptions of their levels of self-care;\nKATHERINE I. McINDOE for a study of\nsupport systems needed by people with\nsevere mood swings when they are In a\nstable state;\nCAROLE A. ROBINSON for a study of\nchronically-ill preschool children's perceptions of hospitalization;\nSALLY E. THORNE for a study titled\n\"Life after Cancer,\" a qualitative study of\nthe transition to cancer survival.\nUBC NURSING FACULTY MEMBER\nCNA'S NOMINEE FOR 3M SCHOLAR\nM. Ruth Elliott, currently on leave\nfrom her position as Assistant Professor in\nthe School of Nursing, has been nominated\nby the Canadian Nurses Association for the\nprestigious 1984 3M Nursing Fellowship.\nProf. Elliott is currently enrolled in the\ndoctoral program at Simon Fraser\nUniversity.\nEach member country of the International Council of Nurses Is invited to\nsubmit the name of one candidate for the\n$7,500 annual grant offered by the Minne\nsota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M).\nProf. Elliott has been active in a\nnumber of national health and nursing\nassociations and is currently a member of\nthe Editorial Board of The Canadian Nurse.\nUBC NURSING RESEARCH DAY PLANNED\nThe School of Nursing is planning an\nall-day research conference during which\nfaculty involved in research will make\npresentations.\nInvitations to the conference, planned\nfor May 4, 1984, will be extended to staff\nfrom all hospitals and agencies so that\nthey may become more familiar with the\nkinds of nursing research being carried on\nat UBC.\nMargaret Klinger, chairman of the\nResearch Committee, said a \"call for\nabstracts\" will be circulated to all\nfaculty members within the next few weeks.\nFurther information may be obtained\nfrom Ms. Klinger at 228-7439 or from\nmembers of the Research Committee.\nLOUISE TENN APPOINTED TO NEW\nSCHOOL HEALTH DIRECTORATE\nLouise Tenn, an Instructor in the\nSchool of Nursing, has been named the\nrepresentative of the B.C. Council of the\nFamily to serve on the new Directorate for\nAgencies for School Health (DASH).\nThis embryonic project is regrouping\nvarious B.C. health agencies involved in\nchild and youth health education.\nA recent survey sponsored by the\nfederal department of Health and Welfare\nasked 28,095 children in Grades 4, 7 and 10\na variety of questions about health. Students in B.C., which has no provincial\nguidelines for health education, scored\nSchool of Nursing\nUniversity of British Columbia\nIRC 338, 2194 Health Sciences Mall\nVancouver, B.C., V6T 1W5\nGlennis Zilm, editor\nVol. 5, No. 3\nJanuary, 1984\nPage 1 poorly, while students in Saskatchewan,\nManitoba and Nova Scotia were among the\nbest informed about health.\nMrs. Tenn said the provinces of\nManitoba, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia\nhave established such a directorate and the\nB.C. group is presently considering the\nfeasibility of development of health\ncurricula in the B.C. schools.\nNEURO COURSE REFLECTS\nSERVICE-EDUCATION COOPERATION\nAnne Wyness, Assistant Professor in\nthe School of Nursing, was host and moderator for a series of six one-hour programs\non \"Nursing Assessment and Management of\nPatients with Acute Neurological Disorders\"\non the Knowledge Network this winter.\nThe program, which was sponsored by\nthe Division of Continuing Nursing Education, was co-ordinated by Margaret\nBorozny, neurosurgical nurse clinician at\nVancouver General Hospital. The lecture\npresentations were by nurses who work in\nneurology and neurosurgical units in the\nVancouver area.\nIn addition to the nursing service-\neducation collaboration that was a keynote\nof the course, there was an interdisciplinary approach through the active participation of an occupational therapist, a\nphysiotherapist and a speech therapist.\nThere were 64 registrants from all\nparts of the province. As well, it seems\nlikely a couple of hundred nurses viewed\nthe satellite communications program without registering, said Shirley Brandt,\nDirector of the division and the Project\nDirector for the course. At least one\nagency held classes for non-registrant\nviewers.\nCourse evaluations from the registrants showed that it was a successful and\nworthwhile program.\nmatch an offer of a $2,000 donation to the\nfund if an equal amount could be raised.\nBeth McCann, Professor Emerita of the\nSchool and President of the Nursing Alumni\nDivision, said the Alumni volunteers had\nbeen delighted with their successful drive.\nIn other Alumni Division news, Prof.\nMcCann reported that $350 had been raised\nfor the Beth McCann fund (for an award to a\ngraduating student each May) through sales\nof Entertainment '84.\nFaculty of the School are reminded\nthat appointment automatically confers\nAlumni status. Anyone\ninterested is welcome to attend.\nCALL FOR STUDENT PAPERS\nNURSING ALUMNI NEWS\nMembers of the UBC School of Nursing\nAlumni raised $2,300 during a December\nPhon-A-Thon. The money is for the Sheena\nDavidson Research Fund, launched in 1981 by\nfriends and colleagues in memory of the\nassistant professor who was killed in a\ntraffic accident in December 1980.\nThe Phon-A-Thon was held to try to\nThe Canadian Council of Cardiovascular\nNurses (CCCN) publishes a bulletin three\ntimes a year. This journal is geared to\ninformation-sharing among nurses working\nwith cardiovascular patients and contains\nclinically-related articles, nursing care\nstudies and reports of nursing research.\nThe CCCN has decided to devote one\nissue a year to student articles. This Board has developed\na certification examination for infection\ncontrol practitioners throughout North\nAmerica. Twenty Canadian nurses took the\nfirst examination in November.\nserves on the Executive of the UBC Academic\nWomen's Association this year.\nDuring a recent visit to Montreal,\nLOUISE TENN was invited to give a presentation to a group of nurses from the\nFederation of Local Community Centres. Her\ntopic was on assessing family needs in the\ncontext of community programs.\nDR. MARILYN WILLMAN, Director of the\nSchool, attended the meeting of the\nCanadian Association of University Schools\nof Nursing in Ottawa in November. Dr.\nWillman was also guest speaker at the November meeting of the Registered Nurses\nAssociation of B.C.'s Vancouver chapter.\nHer presentation was on the changing image\nof nurses.\nIN PRINT\nSUZANNE FLANNERY and DAN JONES presented a paper on \"Head Nurse and Field\nGuide Perceptions of Undergraduate Student\nNursing Students in Clinical Settings\" at\nthe Society for Research in Nursing Education Conference in San Francisco, January\n18-20, 1984. The paper was based on their\njoint research project.\nJUDITH MOGAN and JANET KNOX also\nattended the San Francisco Conference to\ntake part in the Poster Presentation\nsessions. Their presentation was titled\n\"Design of an Evaluation Instrument.\"\nMARGARET KLINGER has been appointed\nchairman of the Research Committee of the\nB.C. Division of the Canadian Council of\nCardiovascular Nurses (CCCN). She has been\na member of the B.C.
