The uncompleted section is not considered by prai —
tical men, who know the country, as
seriously difficult, which with a reasonable push ought to permit of through
trains being run to Vancouver by the 1st
January, 1912. Following are some particulars taken from the Vancouver Province relating to the contracts recently
let :
Construction of the V.,V. & E. railway I
from Abbotsford to Hope, a distance of
approximately 50 miles, will be in full
swing within the next month, or at least
as soon as the contractor can get his outfits on the ground. Information to this
effect was secured in connection, with the
announcement that the contract for the
building of this stretch of the road which
is to link the coast with the Kootenay
and Boundary districts had been awarded
to Mr. P. Welch of Spokane.
Incorporated in the contract is a clause
to the effect that, all things being equal,
all supplies to be used in connection with
construction shall be bought in British
Columbia. The Vancouver board of
trade has been notified of the existence
of this stipulation in tbe contract.
The contract was let from the head
offices of the Great Northern railway in
erally known, a subsidiary company of
the former railway. Coast officials of the
Great Northern were yesterday afternoon
notified of the awarding of the contract.
Mr. Welch is a member of the contracting firm of Foley, Welsh & Stewart,
which is now engaged on Grand Trunk
Pacific construction work from Prince
Rupert eastward. The same firm built
the existing line of the V.V. & E. from
Marcus, Wash., in Princeton, a distance
of approximately 500 miles
The amount of money involved in the
contract was not given out for publication, but it is known that none of the
work between Abbotsford and Hope will
be costly owing to the generally level
nature of the country traversed, practi
cally all of it being flat benches flanking
the Fraser river. It is expected that this
section of the railway will be finished
next September.
It was generally understood that the
contract for the construction of 18 miles
of railway from Princeton to Otter Flat,
on the Coldwater river east of Hope pass,
would be awarded at the time the work
between Abbotsford and Hope was let,
but no word of this is contained in the
message from St. Paul.
The news has been confirmed that the
construction of the V.,V. & E. will be
carried on simultaneously from both
ends, Princeton and Abbotsford. The
firm of J^ W. Stewart 8& Co. has been
awarded the contract to build the V.,V.
& E. to Otter plat, a distance ot 18 miles
from Princeton, and the same firm, which
is identical with Foley, Welch & Stewart,
will build from Abbotsford to Hope, a
distance of 57 miles. It is not
likely, nor would it be reasonable,
that any opposition will develop in
the railway committee of the house
©f commons against said extension,
seeing that President Hill has produced the evidence of completed
line in proof of his bona fide intention to carry out the terms of the
original charter and build through
to the coast. Insistence must, however, be made regarding the short
limitation of time to be given. It
is too bad that the time and opportunities of the inhabitants of the
Similkameen, as well as of thousands of investors, should be frittered away in waiting upon slow
construction and completion of this
road to the coast. At the rate of
construction from Midway to
Princeton, some four or five years
for about 140 miles, it would at least
be 1915 before trains would be running to the coast. Two years are
ample in which to build the remaining link between Princeton and
Abbotsford, a distance of about 140
miles. Mr. Burrell, M.P., will, no
doubt, urge the limitation of time
mentioned and thus ward off deadly
delay, which has had such injurious
^effect in the past five years.
clfmate and productivity of the soil
are bound to induce men with
independent means to locate here
for the mere inherent pleasure,
comfort and healthfulness to be
derived from them. The tourist and com-cercial traffic that will
spring up between the two places
will more than justify any effort to
promote harmony and goodwill between them and the early completion of the road. Two totally different climates, wet and dry, and
the varying scenic grandeurs of sea
arid mountain will produce a great
passenger traffic. Further, the
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
