The other week he was calling
the editors of other papers similar names
and it fell to the lot of the gentleman
who edits tbe Ft. George Herald to give
Bruce his quie"tus*^'>twor_rof_s of four
letters each. Star has _iBw__T5eTfer way
of dealing with a character like Bruce,
who has slandered many persons from the
premier of the province and his ministry
down to tbe humblest subject. Star admits that it is belittling to pay any attention to the Sunset man and readers are
asked to pardon this enforced offence.
Our position is similar to that of the
plaintiff in the recent libel suit against
Bruce, in which the former won and was
awarded nominal damages, thus virtually
censuring him for having given any
heed to the irresponsible writer. Bruce's
unintended humot/toward the Star may
cause us to smile but there is a serious
side to ii. The big column of abusiye
stuff hurled at the Star and others is
hardly fit for boys and girls to read and
is neither instructive nor elevating for
older persons. In the interests of clean
journalism, clean home and clean social
life no one can afford to couutenance a
paper which plays the part of a muck
rake. Error cannot be remedied by
patronizing it. Personally the Star is
not concerned about the knocks or praise
of scribblers who fortify a weak morale
with excessive use of fireworks and
firewater, but if Bruce will abandon both
he mav 3'-1 command respect and influence with the thoughtful public. This is
s _d with no intention of provoking another column of virulent abuse in Sunset
but with the sole aim of helping to main
tain the dignity of the press and making
all journals in this province a power for
good. It says : 'We
are anxious to enlist your sympathy
and financial assistance in this noble
cause: the welfare of woman in
particular and humanity in general.'
They are welcome to both. Any
person knowing the corruptive influences at work in much of the
politics of all countries having origin at the ballot box will have small
excuse to refuse women the ballot
and their purifying tendency in
every walk of life. Politics will be
that much better by the presence of
the leaven of womanly influence
at the ballot box, heightening the
present standard of representation
and adding respectability and
moral tone to government generally.
Critics and opponents of Christian Science who predicted early
dissolution of that body after the
passing of the revered leader, Mrs.
Eddy, will probably be amazed to
know that there is not the slightest
sign of decadence. In fact there is
abundant proof that the Scientists
are gaining in influence and numbers every day. Churches are being
erected all over the land, members
. are flocking to its fold, even
in Princeton where, until recently
there was not a Scientist, a real in-
trest is observed in its teachings by
those brought into, touch simultaneously with the Bible and the
wholesome Christian Science literature. Dr. W. F. W. Wilding, M.
R.C.S., with a number of medical
doctors, has abandoned medicine
for divine healing. In Edinburgh,
Scotland, he recently in public
stated that he had spent many years
in medicine, twelve;of which were
in Lancashire. He says: ' A eare^
ful study of the teaching of Christian Science revealed tbe method
and law by which such healing is
accomplished, and gradually I became convinced that it was the same
method as that taught and practised by Jesus. Further study and
examination of the healing works
of Christian Science eventually led
me to give up medical practice. *'
Christian Science is attracting the
multitude because it does the work
the Master did iu healing suffering
humanity of sin and disease—failure to do His work must result in
religious atrophy, the empty pew
and national corruption. Sin and
disease are twins, as taught by the
great Physician, and the mnltipli
cation of diseases now observed is
but a reflex of the low spiritual condition of humanity. Hope lies in
Christian Science to spiritually uplift and divinely heal rather than
trust in idols made of syrup, oil,
extracts, 'dope' and the thousand
inventions of man.
