No. 14.
PRINCETON, B.C., SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 1906.
$2 a Year, in Advance
MINING EXPERTS ARRIVE.
Will Sample Various Camps and Note
Conditions and Prospects.
Prof. Landis- and J. Roberts of Seattle
arrived in Princeton on last Saturday's
stage for the purpose of making an expert investigation of the mineral resources of this section and of the Nubian
group more particularly. They have
come on behalf of representatives of
capital who have become interested in
mining here through J. F. Leland. A
large preliminary expenditure will be
made in ore tests and examination of
..deposits. To facilitate this a portable
plant of about rooo pounds weight will
be used in testing and analyzing the ore
of various camps. The above named
gentlemen with C. Snowden as guide
left for Copper mountain last Sunday
where they have collected sixty-three
ore samples from as many mineral claims.
W. Dawson McGregor, M.E-, al«o of the
party, returned to the coast on Sunday
after having spent a week in looking over
some of the mineral properties—he wi 1
be back again in about a fortnight.
ROCHE RIVER TRAIL.'
It is a pity that the trail from Princeton to Roche river is not put in better
shape. Prospectors and all others using
the trail risk life and limb in trossing an
unsafe bridge and climbing precipitous
banks. There are timbers across the
trail, and in some places it needs widening. With a very large appropriation of
money for Similkameen roads, trails and
bridges it seems too bad that tt is trail
and the roads should be neglected. Possibly the road superintendent on reading
this item will kindly give the matter his
immediate attention.
TRAVELLER AND EXPLORER.
Chas. Camsell, Dominion geologist,
has moved his camp from four miles
above town to the international boundary
line where it intersects the Pasayton
river. From that point he will work toward Princeton. While here he was collecting information about the Princeton
coal basin. Mr. Camsell has been in the
far north of Canada exploring that great
lone country in the Mackenzie river
basin to the Arctic ocean. He was the
first to blaze a trail across country from
Dawson to the Peace river settlement, a
very difficult task owing to many portages and rough travelling, the distance
being near a thousand miles.
E. Barr Hall is clearing off two lots on
which he will move his house, rendered
necessary by the railway line going
through his pretty homestead.
Regular meeting of the board of trade
will be held next Thursday evening.
Election of a secretary to take the place
of Mt. Switzer, removed, and other important business.
MINES AND MINING.
Search for the Lost Lead Claim—Gold
Crpwn has Tunnel.
R. Fitzgerald reports progress on the
Gold Crown at Granite Creek. He is now
ih fifty feet with tunnel in ore between
well denned walls. Much of the lead is
decomposed quartz which can be mined
with pick and shovel. Gold is panned
out from it.
J. Os. Coulthard arrived in town yesterday via Hope Pass and will be at
Roanie camp balance of summer. He
has renewed last year's contract with
Chinks to rediscover the Lost Lead claim
which can be done only by wing dam on
the Tulameen river. The lode was lost
after the big placer stampede in the early
days. It is very rich in gold and many
wish Mr. Coulthard success in his plucky
venture.
LADY PROSFECTRESS.
H. B. Brown and wife came up from
Hedley on a prospecting trip last Monday. They are delighted with this pai t
of the country both from a mineral and
scenic viewpoint. The coal, especially,
looked good to them as Hedley, thus far,
depends on the pine and hemlock for its
fuel. When the railway is in operation,
however, Princeton coal will warm the
hearts and hands of all between here and
Spokane. Mrs. Brown is the first lady
prospectress to visit Princeton and thinks
the formation very favorable.
AN OUTSIDE OPINION.
Writing of the great resources of the
Similkameen in a recent issue the Rossland Miner says, in part: "With these
and other resources, once transportation
is afforded, the country should have more
than ordinary prosperity. Princeton,
which promises to be one of the leading
cities of the Similkameen, is less than
150 miles from Vancouver, and when rail
communication is established between
the two places it will be of vast advantage to both. The completion of this
line will mean a great deal to Rossland.
Vancouver will then take more interest
in mining affairs than she does at present."
The money orders and postal notes
paid at the Princeton post office indicate
the growing importance of this section
when compared with other places. The
total paid was $4877, or nearly $400 more
than the next highest office in the
Similkameen last year.
J. R. Campbell, of the City drug store,
has had an urgent invitation to visit
Camborne and take a hand in the celebration for the ist July. A tempting
offer for a foot race, $100 a side, has been
made him, which he feels would be easy
money as he has already twice defeated
the party making the proposition.
I HERE AND THEfflJ
AAAAAAor^ald.oauntry.
