Mr. James Wallace, the\nproprietor, had occasion to beup^at that\nhour and hearing a noise in he barroom\nproceeded to investigate. Proceeding\naround the corner of the building on to\nBridge street he: noticed a man coming\nout of the hall door entrance and breaking into a run disappeared in the space\nbetween' his house and the Great Northern Hotel. \u00E2\u0080\u00A2 TgilS )>$&&&$$:\n- Instead of following the fugitive\" Mr.\nWallace entered his hotel and found that\nthe bar door leading from the hall had\nbeen forced opened and the\" cash drawer\ndisturbed as stated. The thief whoever\nhe was was evidently disturbed in j his\nwork by hearing Mr. Wallace approaching and made his escape without getting\naway with any money.\nMr. Wallace had a suspect arrested,\nthe case coming up for hearing on Monday before C. E Thomas and E. Waterman, J. P.'s. After hearing considerable\nevidence, the court decided there was\nnot proof enough for a conviction and\ndismissed the case.\nM. Stickney and Miss M. Stickney,\nnephew and niece of Mr. W. H. Hager-\nman, arrived from Salem Oregon, last\nweek on a visit to their uncle here.\nIn 1862 the great rush to Cariboo took\n4>lace, and through the toll bridges and.\nway houses who tried to keep .count, it,\nwas,thought that fully 8,000 people went\nto Cariboo that season. On September\n26th n big snow storm took place, some\ntwo and a half feet falling, and as a consequence about 500 pack animals perished. This scared the people and . they\nleft by the thousands. In three weeks'\ntime only 90 of us remained. But of the\nthousands who went to Cariboo in 1862\nand took active partin the mines I think\nthere must still be about 100 living. On\nmy.recent visit to Cariboo I met sixteen\nof the real old timers in BarkervjH\u00C2\u00A7,f flfl-;\non Williams' creek,\"and some are sti|L-\nquite active. Aridirew Kelley and Mrs-\nKelley I found running their hotel and\nstore just as they were 40 years ago, and\nai\u00C2\u00A3..Still quite active. Rogers, ex-M.P.P.,\nJames Boycey Chas. House, Dave Edwards, and my brother John, J;be present\nsheriff, are all hale and hearty and enjoying life. I also met seven Mdifjiands\non Keithley creek.'\nWhen the first news of the discovery of\ngold appeared in the papers I was customs house officer at Osooyos lake, and\nthe gold fever taking a strong hold on\nme I resigned the position and started \u00E2\u0080\u00A2\nfor Cariboo, reaching there in the fall of\n1861. The Star suggests the reason for the failure of\nthe Conservatives to tnajte headway\n\u00E2\u0080\u00A2when it says: \"The Opposition\u00E2\u0080\u0094\ncontrary to all tradition\u00E2\u0080\u0094has become the timid party, substituting\nmild suggestion for positive aggression and doing Its official 'oppbs-\nina' in a half-hearted way. It is\nbreaking no new ground with any\nimplement more formidable than an\n-erratic golf club, and leaves the\npeople guessing what they would\ngain if they were to work a political\nrevolution and left the Conservative\nparty to power.\"\nA short time ago Mr. Fielding was\nable to announce that the surplus of\nthe past fiscal year had more than\nwiped out the debt increase of the\npast ten years, and that Canada's\ndebt to-day is less than it was when\nthe Tories went out of office, while\nin the meanwhile great public\nworks have been carried on, and\nthe percentage of duty on imports\nhave been lowered. If the courts of\nappeal uphold his view of the law\njt is altogether probableiUhat special\n.legislation will be passed by the\n\u00E2\u0096\u00A0Government at Victoria and O.tawa\njnaking divorces legal.\nThe Vancouver City Council recently passed a memorial to the\nProvincial Legislature calling their\nattention to the lack of systematic\nknowledge of the resources of the\nprovince and the consequent failuie\nto attract white immigrants, closing\nwith the tecam.rrendat.ion that the\nGovernment inaugurate a policy\nthat will induce a desirable white\nimmigration into this province and\nafford the^-:on arrival such official\nand accurate information of the opportunities our natural resources\noffer as settlors in other provinces\nobtain:\nThe net debt of Ca'nada in 1878\nwhen the Cdriservatiye party took\noffice. \\'as $140,360,000.- In 1896,\nwhen the deluge came, it was $258,-\n497,000, or an average increase of\nsix and a half mi-llibn dollars a\nyear.7 In the ten years from 1896\nto 1906 the debt increase-was ;,$8,-\n445,000, the total debt being. $267,\n042,000 in-1906\nIt is estimated, says an exchange,\nthat nine hundred million dollars\nhas been paid by American parents\nfor titled husbands for their daughters. This of course has been a\ndrain upon the financial resources\nof the United States and the worst\nof it is that a good deal more than\nhalf of this money seems to have\nbeen invested very poorly, as tl.e\nrecords of the divorce courts show.\nIt is hardly to be expected that\nwhen the most sacred relation in\nlife is made a matter of barter and\nsale that the transaction is likely to\nbe successful.
