Fulton, Mrs. D. Jones, Mr. M.\nSugimoto, Dr. A. Van Seters, Dr. J. L. Wisenthal.\nSenate membership\nThe Chairman welcomed to Senate Mr. S. R. Pearce, Lieutenant Governor in\nCouncil appointee.\nItems brought forward from the April 24, 1985 Senate meeting\nReport of the Librarian 1983-84\nMr. Mclnnes, the University Librarian, spoke briefly to the report which\nhad been circulated for information. 8423.\nWednesday, May 22, 1985\nFaculty of Arts\nGuided Independent Study - change in Faculty requirement\nDean Will ) That no more than one half the units taken for\nDr. hblsti ) credit at The University of British Columbia\ntowards the degree of Bachelor of Arts may be\ntaken through Guided Independent Study or other\nCorrespondence Courses. In the last 30 units,\nno more than 21 units may be taken through Guided\nIndependent Study.\nIt was stated in the material circulated that the Faculty of Arts has\nnot hitherto set an upper limit on courses offered through Guided\nIndependent Study. At present, it is possible, though only in two\ndepartments, for a student who enters the University with 30 units of\ntransfer credit to complete the B.A. without taking any regular classes.\nThe intent of the proposal is to affirm the value of regular classes and\nto ensure that every student has completed some of them. The proposed\nregulation allows the number of units taken by correspondence to vary in\naccordance with the number of units the student actually takes at this\nUniversity: if that number is 30, then the allowable GIS maximum is 15;\nif it is 60, then the allowable GIS maximum is 30, providing that in the\nupper years, last 30 units, at least 9 units are in regular classes.\nThe motion was put and carried.\nGrading Policy\nThe following proposal from the Faculty of Arts had been circulated:\n\"The Faculty of Arts recommend that for a mark of \"T\" a mark must\nbe reported or a standing must be recommended within one year of\nthe end of the term in which a student was first registered in\nthe course. The recommended standing may be 1, 2, P, or F. If\nno standing is recommended, it will be assumed to be F (Fail).\nThis regulation will not apply in post baccalaureate programs in\nthe Faculty.\" 8424.\nWednesday, May 22, 1985\nFaculty of Arts\nGrading Policy (continued)\nIt was stated in the material circulated that at its meeting of October\n28, 1983, the Faculty of Arts reaffirmed the policy of not having a grade\nof incomplete and resolved that a standing must be recommended when a mark\nof \"DNW\" is recorded and that a grade of \"F\" be entered in place of \"DNW\"\nwhere no standing is recommended. This effectively places a strict\ndeadline on completion of course work since standing must be assigned at\nthe end of the session in which a course is taken. At present only a mark\nof \"T\", Thesis in Progress, is immune from such a deadline. The\nresolutions passed in October 1983 are mute on how long a \"T\" can stand.\nA \"T\" can be awarded only to Thesis, Graduating Essay, Correspondence and\nDirected Studies courses approved by the Dean. Such courses include those\nwhere a major research project and paper constitute the principal work in\nthe course. Also included are archaeological field schools where the\nwritten portion of assignments cannot be completed until after the end of\nthe session in which the course is held.\nSenate agreed with the recommendation of the Agenda Committee that this\nproposal be referred to the ad hoc Committee on Grades and Grading.\nFaculty of Graduate Studies\nTransfer Credits\nThe following proposal had been circulated:\n\"That the statement under Section A (7) of the 1984/85 Calendar,\np.135, under Master's Degrees, be replaced with the following:\n7. Students completing courses for a Bachelor's degree at The\nUniversity of British Columbia, if they lack not more that 75%\nof a normal final year course load, may be granted permission\nto register in courses open to graduate students. Upon\napplication they may receive credit for up to six units of such\ncourses toward a higher degree only after registering for such\na degree. 8425.\nWednesday, May 22, 1985\nFaculty of Graduate Studies\nTransfer Credits (continued)\nStudents with a Bachelor's degree who lack prerequisites for a\nchosen field of graduate study may be permitted to register as\nQualifying students for no more than one year. Satisfactory\ncompletion of a Qualifying year does not guarantee admission to a\ngraduate program. Up to 6 units of eligible courses may be\napplied to the graduate degree program provided prior permission\nto register in these courses was obtained from the Department and\nthe Dean of the Graduate Studies. Qualifying status is granted\nonly to those students who are recommended by the Departments\nconcerned for such status.\"\nDean Suedfeld ) That the proposal of the Faculty of\nDean Will ) Graduate Studies concerning Transfer\nCredits be approved.\nCarried\nMotions by Dr. Spencer\nDr. Spencer ) That the agenda for each Senate meeting\nMr. Yaworsky ) provide an opportunity for the President\nto report to Senate and to answer questions\nfrom members of Senate.\nThe Chairman indicated that he would be willing to answer questions on\nSenate business.\nThe motion was put and carried.\nDr. Spencer ) That a procedural motion for a secret ballot\nMr. Williamson ) on any question before the Senate may be made\nat any time and will carry if 10% of those\npresent vote in favour of it. A secret ballot\nwill then be held when the vote on the question\nis taken.\nThe Agenda Conmittee noted that under current practice a secret ballot\nmay be called for at any time and would be held on the basis of a simple\nmajority.\nFollowing a brief discussion the motion was put and lost. 8426.\nWednesday, May 22, 1985\nCorrespondence\nA letter from the Commerce Undergraduate Society expressing concern with\nregard to the ramifications of possible program cuts had been circulated for\ninformation.\nMinutes of previous meeting\nDean Webber ) That the minutes of the Seventh regular\nMr. Pearce ) meeting of Senate for the Session 1984-85,\nhaving been circulated, be taken as read\nand adopted.\nCarried\nBusiness arising from the Minutes (p.8390)\nThe following list of building projects had been circulated for\ninformation in response to a request made at the previous meeting:\n1.
