Farris and Miss Isobel Harvey.\nDr. Killam )\nMiss Jamieson) That the minutes of the regular\nmeeting of October 17th, 1954,\nbe taken as read, and adopted.\nCarried\nExpressions of regret at their inability to attend\nthe meeting were received from Archbishop de Pencier,\nMr. V. L. Denton and Mr. J. N. Harvey.\nA welcome was extended by the President to Dr. J.\nRoy Sanderson, who had been elected by the High School\nPrincipals and Assistants as their representative on the\nUniversity Senate, as from December 10th, 1954.\nMr. G. W. Clark, the retiring representative of the\nHigh School Principals and Assistants, expressed through\nthe President the personal satisfaction which he had\nderived for many years through his association with the\nSenate of The University of British Columbia . ^\n(\n\\nI\nI.\n569.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nDr. Vance)\nMr. Logan) That we place on record our appreciation of the faithful service of\nMr. G. W. Clark as a member of the\nSenate for these many years.\nCarried unanimously\nDr. Vance referred to the serious accident met with\nby Archbishop de Pencier some weeks ago.\nDr. Brown )\nDean Buchanan) That a message of sympathy and\nhope for his recovery be sent\nto Archbishop de Pencier.\nCarried unanimously\nFrom the Board of Governors\nCorrespondence Course in History 12. -\nNo action to be taken until the question\nof extra-mural work has been reconsidered.\nlAotion taken later in the meeting. See page 577)\nThree bursaries from Royal Institution Funds and\ntwo bursaries from the Returned Soldiers Fund. -\nRecommendations approved.\nDavid Thorn Fund - Loans for students in\nOccupational Course - $500.00 of the $1,500.00\nfrom the David Thorn Estate, as set aside for loans\nfor third and fourth year students in Agriculture,\nmade available for students in the Occupational\nCourse.\nCopy of balance sheet and statement of receipts and\ndisbursements for the fiscal year ending March 51st,\n1954.\nDean Clement)\nDr. Farris ) That the balance sheet and statement of receipts and disbursements\nbe received and filed in the\nSecretary's office.\nCarried 570.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nOffer of Dr. J. F. Nicholson to endow two graduate\nScholarships - one in Chemistry and one in Geology\nAs Dr. Nicholson waa leaving the city on short\nnotice and wished to have this matter settled notice of\nhis offer with details of the proposed award had been\nmailed to members of Senate, and the Board of Governors\nhad accepted the offer. The Joint Faculty Committee on\nPrizes and Scholarships and the Chairman of Senate also\nhad approved the acceptance.\nDr. Killam)\nMr. Holmes) That the report be adopted and that\na letter of appreciation be sent to\nDr. Nicholson.\nCarried\nNotice of appointment of Committee\nOn request of Mr. Jerrald Potts for permission to\nre-print and publish examination papers;\nDr. H. Clark.\nFrom the Faculties\nResolutions of the Summer Session Students' Association\nThe recommendations of the Faculties in reference to\nthe resolutions of the Summer Session Students' Association were considered.\nDr. Vance )\nMr. Oliver) That the report be stood over to the\nnext meeting and that members of Senate\nbe furnished with the reports of the\nFaculties in regard to this matter.\nCarried\nCorrespondence Course - Senior Matriculation\nThe question was raised as to whether or not the\ncorrespondence course for Senior Matriculation given by\nthe Provincial Department of Education met the require- 571.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nraents of the University in the laboratory work of the\nscience subjects, and the suggestion was made that the\nmatter be called to the attention of the High School and\nUniversity Matriculation Board.\nDean Clement )\nDean Buchanan) That this action be taken.\nCarried\nFrom the Faculty of Arts and Science\nDegree for A. Leslie Robinson (B.A.)\nMarks had previously been accepted by Faculty and\nSenate. Name added to the list of graduates-elect at\nthe Autumn Congregation with the approval of the Dean of\nthe Faculty of Arts and Science and the Chairman of\nSenate.\nDr. Killam)\nMr. Lett ) That the action of Dean Buchanan and\nthe President be approved.\nCarried\nStanding of Jean Balfour at graduation (1954)\nReport of the Faculty in reference to the\nreconsideration of the standing of Jean Balfour\nAt a meeting of the Faculty of Art3 and Science on\nOctober 10th attention was called to the matter of the\nstanding of Jean Balfour for whom a mark of 80/150 in\nEconomics 4, given in error in April, 1953, had, in July,\n1954, been corrected and raised to 115/150 thus giving\nher the highest percentage in the graduating class in\nCommerce in 1954. Donald Purves had been awarded the\nKiwanis Club Gold Medal. Purves had taken the honours\ncourse and had taken a broader course (more units) than\nhad Miss Balfour. Miss Balfour had taken a pass course\nbut had made, with the corrected mark included, a higher\npercentage. The matter had been referred to the Committee on Prizes and Scholarships and that committee\ngave a full account of the consideration given to the 572.\n\"1\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nstanding of these students. The opinion was expressed\nthat it was doubtful if the award would have been different if the raised mark had been available when the\nstanding of the students was determined. That at least two courses - one in a language\nand one in a science - be subsidized, if\nnecessary, for the Summer Session.\nDean Buchanan)\nDr. Brown ) That this be approved and forwarded to the Board of Governors.\nCarried\nCourse in Methods in German\nThat German be included in the\nexisting Teacher Training Course\nin Modern Language Methods.\nDean Buchanan)\nMiss Jamieson) That this recommendation be\napproved.\nCarried\n4 574.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nReports of Committees\nLibrary\nA letter from the Secretary of the Library Committee\nwas read requesting postponement of consideration of the\nReport, as it had been discovered that certain financial\nfigures given in the report did not agree with the duly\naudited statements in the Bursar's Office.\nDr. Vance )\nDr. Hutchinson) That the letter be received and\nthe request acceded to.\nCarried\nOn request of Mr. Jerrald Potts for permission\nto re-print and publish examination papers\nThat this request be not granted.\nFurther, that it appears desirable to publish\nexamination papers but only under University\nauthority, and it is suggested, as the matter\nof cost was not investigated, that this aspect\nof the matter be referred to the Registrar, the\nBursar and the Manager of the Book-Store for\ninvestigation.\nDr. Hutchinson )\nMr. MacCorkindale) That this report be adopted.\nCarried\nOn Public Relations\nThe report of the Committee had been mimeographed\nand mailed to members.\nDr. Vance)\nMr. Lett ) That the report be received and\nfiled.\nCarried 575.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nOn Extra-University Teaching\nA letter was received from the Committee recommending\nthe appointment of a Director of Extension to put into\neffect Project \"B\" as suggested by the Faculties under the\nCarnegie Corporation grant, and a notice was received from\nthe Board of Governors that action with respect to the\nappointment of a Director of Extra-University Teaching\nhad been deferred until the report of the Committee\nappointed to work out details of plans in connection with\nAdult Education as provided in the Carnegie Corporation\ngrant had been received. Dean Brock reported that at a\nsubsequent meeting of the Committee a resolution had been\npassed recommending that an expert be engaged to report\non the situation in British Columbia and to make recommendations as to the nature of the extra-University\nteaching which could best be undertaken here.\nDr. Vance )\nMr. Holmes) That the communications be received\nand filed.\nCarried\nOn Honorary Degrees\nThat the Honorary Degree of LL.D. be\nconferred on His Excellency Lord\nBessborough, Governor-General of Canada,\non the occasion of his next visit to\nBritish Columbia.\nDr. Farris)\nDr. Brock ) That the recommendation be approved.\nCarried unanimously 576.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1954\nMr. Lett )\nDr. Brown) That the selection of a speaker for\nthe Spring Congregation be left with\nthe Chair.\nCarried\nFrom newspapers re publication and release of\nsessional examination results\nThe Secretary reported that a statement of the\nconditions laid down by the Senate in regard to the\nissuing of sessional examination results to the press\nhad been sent to the Vancouver Sun in reply to their\nrequest for \"copy\" in advance of Senate meetings, and\nalso to a number of other papers. The Vancouver Sun,\nthe Vancouver Daily Province, Victoria Daily Times and\nthe Daily Colonist had given their assurance that they\nwould cooperate and would abide by the conditions.\nA letter was received from the Secretary of the\nProvincial High School Teachers' Section of the B. C.\nTeachers' Federation, giving notice of the election of\nDr. J. Roy Sanderson as representative on Senate from the\nHigh School Principals and Assistants of the Province as\nfrom December 10th, 1954.\nMr. Logan called attention to the gift of $100.00\nfrom the Summer Session Students' Association for the\npurchase of reference books for the Extra-Sessional\nClasses being given this session. 577.\nWednesday, December 19th, 1934\nMr. Logan )\nDr. Farris) That Senate express its appreciation\nof this gift.\nCarried\nWith respect to the decision of the Board of\nGovernors that no action be taken relative to the correspondence course in History 12 until the whole question\nof extra-mural work had been reconsidered, enquiry was\nmade as to what steps if any might now be taken in the\nmatter, and the Chairman asked whether it was the wish\nof Senate to request the Faculties to consider extramural courses, including correspondence courses and\nreport to Senate.\nMr. MacCorkindale)\nDr. Brown\n) That Senate suggest that this\nquestion of extra-mural work\nbe placed on the agenda of\nthe next meeting of the\nFaculties and that a report\nfrom the Faculties be brought\nback to Senate at the next\nregular meeting.\nCarried\nThe Chairman wished the members of Senate a Merry\nChristmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.\nDr. Farris)\nDr. Vance ) That we adjourn.\nCarried\nJkk "Periodicals"@en .
