Killam and Miss Isobel Harvey.\nThe Secretary read the call of the meeting.\nExpressions of regret at their inability to attend\nthe meeting were received from Mr. J. N. Harvey and Dr.\nG. G. Moe.\n^ Dr. W. H. Vance presented the report of the\nCommittees of the Board of Governors and Senate on the\noffer of the Carnegie Corporation of New York to support\nsome worthy undertaking.\nDr. Vance)\nMr. Logan) That the report be received and con-\n*] sidered clause by clause.\nCarried\nClauses 1 to 5, inclusive. Statements of fact.\nOn motions by Dr. Vance, seconded by Mr. Logan,\nthese sections were adopted.\nClause 6. The Honourable Mr. Justice Murphy was\nelected Chairman, Mr. H. T. Logan, Secretary, of\nthe joint Committee.\n4. Projects considered:\nThe following proposed plans for the expenditure\nof the grant were considered by the Committee:\n(a) Memorandum containing twenty-five projects\npresented at the President's request by\nmembers of the Faculties.\n(b) Four projects recommended by a preferential\nvote of Faculties.\n(c) Two additional projects submitted by non-\nFaculty members of the Committee.\n(d) A variant to project \"A\", recommended as an\nalternative to project \"A\" by a vote of\nFaculties taken subsequently to the preferential vote mentioned in para, (b) above.\n(e) An amendment to project \"D\" of the Faculties,\nsubmitted by the President. Additional information:\n\\n(a) The sponsors of certain of these projects, (Nos.\n1, 13, 16, 23 and 25 in the Memorandum and\nproject \"A\" and Variant) at the request of the\nCommittee, submitted supplementary details\nsetting forth more precisely the manner in which\ntheir proposals would be put into operation.\n(b) The opinion of the Board of Governors was secured\nin regard to certain financial aspects of the\nvariant of project \"A\".\n(c) The President presented reports of\ni. A meeting of the Presidents of the four\nWestern Universities held in Winnipeg,\nMarch 51st, 1954, to consider projects\nunder the offer of the Carnegie Corporation.\nii. An interview with Dr. F. P. Keppel,\nPresident of the Carnegie Corporation,\nheld in Toronto on May 31st, 1934*\n6. Recommendations:\nThe Committee recommends that the following disposition be made of the proposed Carnegie Corporation\ngrant and that this plan of operation be submitted\nto the Carnegie Corporation of New York:\n(a) \"Provision to increase the usefulness of the\nUniversity to the people of the Province by an\norganized extension of external University\nactivities, including particularly the organization and supervision of adult education under\nUniversity auspices.\"\nAmount recommended $30,000.00\n(b) Payment of a portion of the travelling expenses\nof members of the staf,f who wish to attend\nmeetings of learned societies to present papers\nprepared by them.\nAmount recommended $10,000.00\n(c) i. Provision of scholarships to enable graduate\nstudents of marked ability to continue their\nstudies in the University of British Columbia\nor in another approved University.\ni 354.\nTuesday, September 4th, 1954\nii.
