The
second is to subscribe for the newspaper.
Our American cousins, who received
such a set-back a few days ago, have
their newspapers in every hamlet and
town. They realize the value of a newspaper. They support the home journals
for many reasons, and the first one is
" that it pays." The man who advertises is known; his place of business is
known; his wares are known and his
prices are known. We live in the days
of "publicity and competition." No
business man will make a start in a back
alley; he begins in a good, clean store,
on a business street. That is one way
of advertising. His wares are the best
—that is another way. This is all done
in the store. He must let the public
know that he is in business, and must
advertise in the local newspaper. He
then looks at the circulation of the paper
—that is where the editor and general
public comes in. The editor must supply
reading matter to engage the attention
of the public, and the subscribers must
remember that a local newspaper is a
public necessity. When you can receive
a newspaper for one year for the small
sum of two dollars—not the wages of
one day for the poorest paid workmen
on these islands—that is where the
assistance comes from the readers of
home newspapers. I am one of them,
and here are my two dollars, Mr. Editor.
I want you and your readers to understand that I am a printer, and know the
expense and trouble connected with
publishing a newspaper, no matter how
small it may be. Two dollars would not
pay for the ink for one publication,
leaving aside the brains and labor for a
year. Two dollars are lessjthan half-a-
day's pay fort a Union Printer, and we
think it an awful sum to have a home
journal doing our advertising and supplying us with news for a whole year.
We want these islands to go ahead;
nothing can advance them like a newspaper. W.e want our business to succeed,
no one will know we ever lived if we
don't advertise. We want to buy or sell
something. I knew a man in Victoria
who had a toy store during my boyhood
days ; he has the largest department
store in the Province to-day. He advertised then and is the greatest advertiser
SOCIAL
AND
DANCE
In aid of the Building Fund for the
New Presbyterian Church
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10
Barges Hall at Eight P. The local papers were good
enough for him.
Then the subscriber: Are the outside
newspapers doing anything to make
these islands better ? Are the owners
of outside newspapers boosting you and
your business? Do the readers and
advertisers realize what a struggle it is
for a man to keep a business going that
requires constant attention and capital
to run it. I know what the struggles
of the early newspaper men were in the
now large cities of the Province when I
was "the devil" under them. They,
like our newspaper men, had a hard
time paying weekly wages ; but they
" stuck to it" and grew with the towns
and cities ; but others are reaping the
benefit now. I worked under Messrs.
Higgins, Robson and other pioneer
journalists in the early days of Vancouver Island, and few remember that
they assisted more in advertising British
Columbia than any other man in the
colony days.
Then advertise, subscribe, do something to assist the great '' developing
machine" on Queen Charlotte Islands.
There is nothing to equal a newspaper
when you want anything or require
people to know anything. The greatest
of home industries is a newspaper, and
for goodness sake remember that a
town is dead that cannot support at
least a weekly local publication.
Cumtux.
Henry Edenshaw's Power Sloop
" Josephine w
Union Engine 15 H.
