How much more is the
wife to be acclaimed who follows to the
lonely farmhouse or log cabin, to share
the discomforts of the man of her
choice? In this great Northern country
are hundreds of men and women who
have given up the world, with its allurements and fashions to make for the
future generations the trails, roads and
clearings along the waterways and in
the interior of our land. Now and then
they have a letter from home, bringing
news of joy or sorrow, of good-will, or
of the failure of those near and dear,
who they will never see again. With
little capital and only their hands to
hew down the forest, they are not dismayed at the task before them. First
a log cabin, followed by a small clearifig,
a boat, or a horse, and a few chickens,
they are content to live and pass the
years in making progress and rearing
the children that will one day succeed
in tilling the soil that meant so many
long days of struggling for the parents.
There may be heroes on the hattle-field
—men who have fought valiently# for
their country--but where, out of the
silent forest, is the voice or the pen to
acclaim the men and women who give
their lives to wrest from the soil the
necessaries of life, the food of the
nation. Some may jibe at the " hayseed," when he comes to town, but let
it not be forgotten that the pioneer
farmer is responsible for all we possess,
from the soles of leather on our feet to
the food we consume.
ture and forestry. This paper, which
constitutes a pamphlet of thirty-five
pages, is an' exhaustive treatise expressed in the plainest terms, on the
culture of smalt "fruits. The fruits dealt
with are strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, gooseberry, and the several
classes of currants. Besides giving full
instructions for planting and cultivation,
notes are given on the relative merits
of varieties.
The pamphlet contains an interesting
table.on the cost of growing and the returns from an acre of strawberries.
At a selling value of five cents per box,
a net profit of eighty-four dollars is
shown. A section is devoted to the
preparation end, application of insecticides and fungicides that are useful in
fruit growing. Having the information
of this paper to guide him, there is no
good reason why every farmer on
these islands should not have a productive fruit garden. On
another occasion I was out with a party
and we were wind bound for several
days and there was no doctor with us to
change the elements. A raven therefor was shot and quickly seized and
singed in the bonfire, and with this in
his hand the head man in our camp ran
quickly down to the low water mark and
swung the raven swiftly to and fro
several times in the direction from which
we required the wind to blow. After
doing this he threw it as far as he was
able behind him and then turned round
several times and picked the bird up
again and took it up into the woods.
There he got some young men to chop
down a spruce tree and they felled the
tree also in the direction of the required
wind. When this was accomplished
(hey propped up the raven on the stump
in a sitting position facing the same
direction. As in the first performance
so also in this ; after all was over the
head man was asked how long they had
to wait for a fair wind, and*he answered
them in so many days or so many houis.
These wind changing ceremonials in
reality should only be performed by the
medicine men, but if the doctors were
well supported by their tribes they allowed a little of their power occasionally to be bestowed on the chiefs, so
ihat they were enabled to officiate during their absence when away from home
and opposed by contrary winds, and
they were granted the desired results
as though the doctors themselves were
present to invoke the spirits to change
i he elements.
(To be continued next week)
COAL NOTICES
COAL>NOTICES
irsrt
& CO.
THE LEADING SHOE STORE
PRINCE RUPERT.
Everything in Boots and Shoes
Agent for " Walk-Over" Shoes
"Queen Quality" Shoes for Ladies
" Classic " Shoes for Children
Ail descriptions of Working Boots,
Packs and Rubber Goods
Prompt Attention Given to Mail Orders
lUggggggggggBBBSSSSSBSSBBSBBSStSSSSBSSBSi SB BHBSBBBSBBBf
LAND ACT.
Queen Charlotte Islands Land District-
District of Skeena
Take notice' that Arthur Solomon, of
Queen Charlotte, B.
