L. BARGE
At ISLANDER OFFICE
QUEEN CHARLOTTE, B.C.
An exciting experience occurred in
Hecate Straits last week-end. The tug
McCulloch left Prince Rupert with a
raft in tow, containing 70,000 feet of
lumber, to be used in the construction
of the new wharf at Sandspit. The
weather was a bit rough for such an
undertaking, and when some distance
out it became worse, in fact it was
found necessary to cut the raft adrift
to save the tug from being swamped,
and she hit back to Prince Rupert.
Capt. Wearmouth of the steamer Prince
John, was notified of the occurrence and
kept hi:-; weather eye open for that raft
while coming across. When about 15
miles out from Seal Rocks the Captain
espied "the danger to navigation," and
the "John" bore down on the raft of
lumber and soon had it in tow. With
weather anything but pleasant, the
"John".;had no easy task in towing
the lumber across the Straits, but Sandspit was reached without further mishap late Sunday night.
•W.G. Gillett, who built the Massett
wnarf and the Delkatlah bridge, is also
the contractor for Sandspit wharf.
Gillett is sure being followed by a
"Jonah," or else has one amongst his
crew. Since commencing his contracts
on the islands he has been followed to
each job by some exciting experience
or accident. First, his donkey engine
got smashed up while being put on board
the steamer at Vancouver, and a new
one had to be shipped, causing much
delay and expense. Then he had trouble
with his piling in the swift running
waters of Massett Inlet,-'delay in getting
lumber from Prince Rupert; ten men
nearly drowned throgh a launch striking
a reef while on its way for lumber for
Massett wharf. Then Inspector McNeil severely injured on Delkatlah
bridge. On top of this comes the tug
McCulloch running a close call of being
lost. A list of misfortunes surely. But
the only thing that Gillett was upset
about was the accident to McNeil,
his other experiences being .taken as a
matter of course; and the Contractor is
still smiling.
o
Will George Do It ?
The question is uppermost in the minds
of a few of our inquisitive residents as
to whether our pioneer store-keeper intends taking the "leap" this hymeneal
month—or not.
