DeShields and family are spending a few weeks at the Horse Shoe Bend,\nNorth Fork.\nThe cat worm plague has subsided\nOwing no doubt to the cold weather and\nrains of the past week.\nMrs. Williams, Mrs. Duguid and Mrs.\nHurley and families are sojourning at\nSeaton Lake camping out.\nF. H. Kinder has this week \u00E2\u0080\u00A2 onpleted\na cabin on the stern of the Minnehaha\nfor the accommodation of passengers.\nA horse has strayed into Paul Santini's\npasture. The owner had better call\n\u00C2\u00ABsd settle charges and take tha animal\n.-\u00E2\u0080\u00A2way. '\nMr. E. Bell, Tndian agent for this\nflection is around on one of his tours of\ninspection of tbe different tribes. He\nwill remain here for a few davs.\nA cutworin of large size, about four\ninches in length was on exhibition at\nthe Pioneer Hotel the past week. He\nis large enough to hare been instrumental in superintending the infesting\nthe farms and gardens around Lillooet.\nA gang of men are at work on the\nLytton road a few miles from town,\nchanging the route and taking the original line, which will avoid considerable\nsand and hills. D. McLeod is in charge\nof the gang.\nMr. F. W. Foster writing from Clinton\nto the deputy minister of agriculture\nsays that fine, dry ashes of wood\nsprinkled around in gardens and fields\nwhere cutworms are will have an immediate effect on them. Directly the\nworm touches the ashes it wriggles and\ndies. \t\nThe Lillooet base ball club received a\ntelegram from the Kamloops club Wednesday, asking the Lillooet team to\nplay at Kamloops the last of this month.\nOwing to Lillooet not having an organised team at present and those who do\nplay being without practice it was impossible to accept the invitation.\nThe B.C. Express Company this week\ncompleted a deal whereby the stage line\noperating on the Lytton road. by Cameron A Hurley, was purchased by the\ncompany, who took charge Monday\nevening. Wm. R. Cameron will be retained by the company on the road and\nMessrs. Anthony A Robson at Lytton\nwill be the local agents.\nThe Provincial government offers a reward of $250 for such information as will\nlead to the arrest and conviction of any\npersen or persons who on the 18th of\nJuly last, did wilfully and maliciously\nshoot and kill one horse and also wil-\ny\ fully shot and maim one horse, the\n('\u00C2\u00B0v properties of a Chinaman and an Indian\n\"J at a point on the wagon road about five\nmiles below the town of Clinton.\nOur local sportsman are preparing\ntheir guns, conveyances e'e, for the\nshooting season when it opens.\nSeveral men were put to work this\nweek on the Bridge River trail and will\nendeavor to put it in condition.\nWhen the new steamer is in running\nshape it is the intention of the owners to\nhave an excursion up Seaton Lake.\nSt. Mary's church has been repaired and is now in good condition for\nwinter use. The new floor, windows\nand paint inside make a decided improvement.\nMr.John Marshall was taken suddenly\nill at his residence on Cayoosh creek,\nlate Wednesday evening and medical\nattendance was summoned, but before\nthe arrival Mr. Marshall had somewhat\nrecovered from his comatose condition.\nAlthought not confined to the house\nMr. Marshall is not well and his many\nfriends hope that nothing serious may\narise. \t\nMr. Archie McDonald this week received the appointment of road superintendent, being reinstated into his old\nposition after several weeks delay. The\npeople of East and West Lilloot.'. are\nthoroughly satisfied wilh Mr. McDonald\nas he is a practical and Competent man\nfor the position and he being reinstated\ngives entire satisfaction to all. His appointment was a few weeks later than\nour neighboring districts but we hope\nwith a little rustling the work will be\ncaught np with.\nDeath of firs. Rives.\nThe sad news of the death at Vancouver of Mrs. Rives, wife of Colonel G. T.\nRives, and daughter ot Mr. P. Burnet\nof Lillooet, was received Monday morning with deep regret. Mrs. Rives had\nbeen ailing for some time and was taken\nto Vancouver a short time ago to receive\nmedical attendance at St. Paul's hospital. Everything possible was done to\nrelieve the sufferer but without avail as\nshe passed away early Monday morning,\nthe 6th.\nThe deceased was a native of Orillia,\nOnt., and was twenty-four years of age,\nhaving resided in British Columbia\nseveral years. She was married to\nColonel R.ves, at St. Mary's church,\nLillooet, January 1st, 1900, a little over\nseven mon tha ago.\nBesides her father she has a brother\nand a sister residing in Lillooet and also\nrelatives in Vancouver, who feel deeply\nher death.\nThe bereaved husband and family\nhave the sincere sympathy of their\nmany friends.\nThe Maple Leal Forever.\nSubstitution of the maple leaf for the\nDominion shields of arms on the Canadian edition of the British flag, as\nsuggested by the Ontario Historical\nSociety, seems to be a pretty sensible\nidea. The maple leaf iB really emple-\nmatic jf this country and would be con-\nspicious on a fl\u00E2\u0080\u009Eg. The other thing is a\nhodge-podge understands and which on\na flag is a mere unrecognizable jungle of\ncolors even at a short distance.\u00E2\u0080\u0094Ottawa\nJournal.\nThe Anderson Lake Mining Co's mill\non McGillivray Creek is now running.\nFrank Tinkham and George McDonald\nleft town Thursday for the McKinley\nclaim on Cadwallader, owned by Dan.\nFraser, Frank Tinkham and others.\nP. W. Heath and Ed. Cairns spent a\nfew days this week on Anderson Lake,\nwhere Mr. Heatli has an interest in a\nmineral claim which he was looking\nover and is we'l pleased with the showing.\nM. Gaynor returned from Cadwallader yesterday where he has been\nfor the past month doing assessment\nwork on his claims. He reports things\nlooking good along Cadwallader creek\nand on his claims everything ia satisfactory. \t\nThe Cobbledick dredge at Lytton\noperating on the Fraser River is now\nrunning and handling considerable\ngravel. The dredge is of a late ttyle,\nin New Zealand was very successful in\nsecuring the gold. The Cobbledick\ndredge it is hoped will prove a success.\nA. F. Rosenberger a mining man from\nNelson B. C. arrived in town Thursday\nevening from Lytton and left next morning for Cayoosh creek to look over some\nquartz claims owned by local parties.\nMr. Roienberger intends spending several weeks in the Lillooet district and\nwill look over other sections before his\nreturn home.\nThe American owners of the nickle\nmines of Sudbury, Ont., only pay their\nworkers the miserable wage\u00E2\u0080\u0094considering the hard \u00E2\u0080\u0094of $1.25 for a ten hour\nday. The wonder is that the miners\ndon't migrate almost en masse to better\nlabor conditioned British Columbia. The\n$1.25 of Sudbury is, of course, worth a\nlittle more than the same sum here and\nand equals $1.50 in the Kootenay. The\npay is nevertheless poor for a hard ten\nhours day.\nGeo. H. Gillespie, manager of the\nBend'Or mines came down from Cadwallader Saturday and left next morning for the coast where he expects to\nremain about a couple of weeks. Mr.\nGillespie took down with him the result\nof the mill run which amounts to several\nthousand dollars. The property is looking first rate and the ore thoroughout is\nkeeping its average. During Mr. Gillespie's absence Arthur F. Noel ia in\ncharge of the mine.\nMr. John Dunlop left town the first of\nthe week for Cadwallader with Mr.\nLeslie Hill, engineer for Lord Ernest\nHamilton, and will inspect the Woodchuck property on which Mr.Dunlop has\na bond. Besides the Woodchuck property they will also look over that section\ngenerally and may probably become\ninterested in other properties. Lord\nErnest Hamilton is interested considerable throughout the province and it is\nhoped he may secure properties in Lillooet.\nL. D. Lewis and Mat Gilfoil went up\nto the North Fork to do assessment work\non a mineral claim owned by them-\nThe mining committee in the provincial legislature is considering the imposition of a license for free miners, repealed\ntwo years ago bv the Semlin government, also a clause including the costs\nof survey in assessment work.\nCaptain Lamoree who has been in\ntown for the past few weeks awaiting an\nopportunity to ship the hydraulic pipe-\nand-giant to the Scum Scum on the South\nFork, expects to have everything cleared\nin another week and will then leave for\nCalifornia for the winter. His partners Dr. Brackett and Prof.Rifenburg\nare hard at work repairing the damage\ndone by the high water of a few weeks\nago. They will have the property in\neood shape to commence active operations in the spring.\nWar Loan Heavily Subscribed To.\nNew York, Aug 4.\u00E2\u0080\u0094So great was tbe\ndemand for the new British War Loan\nthat before 11 o'clock this morning one\nof the United States agents announced\nthat the subscriptions already received\nwould no doub't call for half of the entire \u00C2\u00A310,000,000. Another of the bank-\ninp houses named in yesterdays Bank of\nEngland circular, announced itself ready\nto take all the bonds, if there was any\nliklihood of such a proposition being\nentertained abroad. Two days subscriptions came from the insurance\ncompanies, corporations and private\nholders, anxious to exchange United\nStates government bonds for the new\nissue on a basis which would yield\ndouble the rate of interest which their\npresent holdings now pay.\nIt was reported in Wall street today,\nafter business hours, that half of the\nentire issue of the new British war loan\nhas been underwritten in this country.\nIt was said that \u00C2\u00A37000,000 sterling will\nbe used to defray the South African War\nexpenses, and the balance will go towards the cost of the campaign of China.\nNet Cutting.\nInformation comes from Steveston\nthat nine fishing nets were mysteriously\ncut on Monday night. The nets were\nall owned by Japanese, which gave rise\nto the impression that union fishermen\nwere avenging themselves on the Japanese for deserting the strikers. The nets\nwere supposed to have been cut while\nthe owners f lept. The damage done is\nestimated at $900. The Japanese are\nalarmed and are again calling for more\npolice protection. The amount of bis defalcation is about $1,500. The preliminary examination waa held, and the\naccused was sent up for trial.\nPrince Alfred Dead.\nCbburg, July 31.\u00E2\u0080\u0094Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg,\nsecond son of Queen Victoria, died at 10\no'clock last evening, at Rosen a castle\nfrom paralysis of the heart. Recently\nat a consultation of specialists in Vienna\nit was discovered that there was a cancerous growth at the root of bis tongue.\nBy his sudden death he escaped a painful, lingering death.\nQauda-r Te Retire.\nA Winnipeg despatch says: Jake Gaudaur, of Rat Portage, champion oarsman of the world, when on a visit to\nthe regatta here, stated that after this\nhe would retire from the championship.\nAlthough 42 years of age he is the\npicture of health, but has streaks of\ngray in his hair. He fancies young Ten\nEyck will prove his s uccessor to the\ntitle.\t\nThe First Contingent.\nA cable message from Col. Otter says\nthe effective strength of the First Canadian contingent is increasing and it now\nnumbers 700 men fit for the field. This\nis considered a wonderful improvement\ncompared with about five weeka ago,\nwhen a report from Col. Otter stated\nthe force had been reduced to 350, from\ndisease and other causes.\nMachinists Strike.\nVancouver, Aug 3.\u00E2\u0080\u0094All the machinists\nin the C.P.R. shops here went out on\nstrike this morning in obedience to\norders received from Winnipeg. Thirty\nmen quit work this morning, as many\nmore having been laid off recently because of slackness of business. Machinists throughout British Calumbia are on\nstrike to-day.\nYukon Representation.\nIt is officially announced that on and\nafter August 19th. the Yukon will be\ngiven the right to elect two representatives to the Territorial Council.
