This\nis to be asked for at the suggestion\nof tke Mayor, and the committee will\nbe osketl to report.\nAt the council meeting last night,\nthe Mayor said there was a great,\nileal of outside criticism of the city\nhall staff. The council had during\nthe last few months, reduced the staff\nby eight. There was still n clamor\nfor greater retrenchment* He believed there could not. be any further\nreducti*>n, if efficiency was to he obtained.\nHe felt that In order to satisfy the\npublic, that the Board of Trade, the\nTrades and Labor Council, the Real\nEstate Exchange and the Retai'er's\nAssociation might be asked to appoint\na citizen's committee to meet the\ncouncil and go into the question.\nThere had been statements made at\nthe council and reported, dealing with\nthe financial situation, that did not\ndo the city any good. He would like\nto see. a committee composed, even\nof their most extreme opponents,\ncome in and go into all the correspondence on the matter. He had\nno doubt as to the result.\nIf the counGil regarded this with\nfavor, he would have the tour organizations written to, and asked to\ntake action.\nAid. Maitland said that there certainly was a- feeling that the staff\nwas toe large. Outside there was\nonly one man looking after the plank\nroads, and another taking care of the\nhorso*. There were about eighteen on\nthe city kail.\nAid. Montgomery did not think it\nwas fair to expect reductions in the\ncity hall staff, because the Board of\nWorks staff was reduced. He would\nlike to have seen the action taken\nearlier.\nThe motion to ask for the committee was carried.\nDR.
