Now, tor many
years, as most people In British Columbia know, I was a fairly sturdy
and consistent opponent of the author of Bowserism. But I am free to
6ay that I never in all those years
found symptoms of cowardice, moral,
physical or otherwise in Premier
Bowser. On the other hand his opponents have generally found him
ready to meet them more than half
way in a fight. He has never run
away from a fight that I am aware
of. .Moreover, I never knew Mr. Bowser when he would not meet his bitterest opponent with a smile and a
handshake. Further than that, I have
frequently found him disconcertingly
frank. He has a fashion of laying his
oards on the table face up, with a
candor that flabbergasts his opponents. He will tell you just what he
Intends to do and how he intends to
do it, knowing full well that you are
going to do your level best to defeat
him in his efforts, which ls not the
i way of a coward.
Unpopular Duties.
In his capacity at Attorney-General he has had to do many unpleasant things, things he knew would
tend to make him unpopular. As the
first lieutenant of Premier McBrlde,
it seemed to be an understood thing
that If the Government had to take
a stand that would prove unpopular,
Mr. Bowser was the one chosen to
bear that unpleasant part. To such
an extent was this carried that for
a long time it looked as if the Attorney-General might be blazing a
trail to his own political grave. It ls
not to be supposed he did not know
what all this must mean for him. Yet
he never appeared to shirk any unpleasant duty that was laid upon
him. All this goes to show, of course
—If It needed proving—that Mr.
Bowser Is not a coward, nor a poltroon, and that Bowserism cannot
referendum act, but, following the
precedent of the Manitoba Legislature, passed one at once. He further
supplemented this by drastically re-
knowing that he would find arrayed during the hours for selling liquor
against him not only the liquor in-j during the war. On this point Mr.
Brewster has never committed himself.
