One
of the first acts of Sir Cecil
Springs-Rice, the new British
ambassador, was to call the attention of the state department
to this provision as in violation
of the existing treaty of trade
and commerce between America
and Great Britain.
It is understood that the Democratic tariff managers in the
house, who were at first disposed
to permit the senate to deal with
this question, it being one involving treaty relations, which belong to the upper house, have
recognized the force of the objections that have accumulated
from all quarters, and will themselves remove the objectionable
provision by an amendment
when the administrative section
ofthe bill containingitis reached.
DESTRUCTIVE PUNS
BF SUFFRAQETTES
London, May 5:There is
great interest in the police court
proceedings against the suffra
gettes' leaders held on charges of
conspiracy under the malicious
damage act, which were resumed
at Bow street today. He referred to
"General " Mrs. Drummond as
a "violent and an unscrupulous
woman."
He said Clayton, the chemist,
in whose possession were found
documents describing a plan of
campaign for burning dowr
buildings in London, had put his
brains at the disposal of the women for carrying out crimes and
producing what their own paper
described as a " reign of terror "
in London.
Another letter read by Mr.
Bodkin referred to a proposal by
the suffragettes to damage stockyards in Great Britain. The
cost of the scheme, $100,000.
was probably the reason why it
was not immediately accepted.
The letter said:
" The result of the job would
be splendid."
When Mrs. Beatrice Saundeis
was arrested and searched at the
militant headquarters she attempted to destroy a letter giving details of the investments
made by the Social and Political
Union, in foreign bonds. The President is unbending in his demand
for free wool at once and free raw sugar in three years. These
provisions, as Mr. Wilson's personal contribution to the Tariff Bill,
are regarded as the crux of the situation, and their repudiation
would be a slap at the administration. The wool men evidently see
little prospect of victory on the main issue, and are making a campaign for the removal of the tariff on manufactures of wool, arguing that the placing of wool on the free list without treating manufactured goods the same would not cheapen woolen goods.
Replying to the opposition arguments, the advocates of reduction contend that the removal of the duty on wool, sugar and other
commodities will not destroy the industries affected ; but that if it
does, industries that cannot stand on their own feet after so many
years of coddling and protection have no economic excuse for
existence.
The outcome of the battle, which is likely to lead to the free
admission into tlie United States of many Canadian products, will
be watched v. ith interest on this side of the boundary line.
Commercial PrintingThe Miner
Print Shop.
HAZELTON HOSPITALS
lor any period from on month upward at SI per
month in advance, This rate includes office con-
lUltationa and medicines, as well an all coats while
In the hospital. On the north side of
Cardero Channel there is one
piece of land comprising 145
acres which a short time ago was
taken up as a pre-emption. The
pre-emptor very shortly afterwards disposed of the timber
upon his as-yet-un-crown-granted
holding, at a price of one dollar
per thousand, and straightway
returned to town to enjoy himself on the results of his little
speculation, displaying no further interest in his property as a
future farm. Investigation was
at once ordered, a cruise showed
the timber to run from fifteen to
thirty-five thousand feet to the
ancl I acre, and the pre-emption was
jaj] cancelled and timber already cut
seized. Seven hundred thousand
feet had already been cut and
removed. The remainder on the
holding was estimated at 1,050,-
000 feet, but actually scaled 920.-
000 feet, and this has now been
sold at $1.50 per thousand in addition to the royalty, the purchasing firm assuming also all
charges and expenses incidental
to the seizure. In addition there
was also sold to the same firm all
standing timber on the extinguished pre-emption, thiscompris-
ing approximately 780,000 feet,
almost wholly fir, at $1.00 per
M. and royalty, the sale being
made conditional upon the whole
being logged off within two years.
ftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftftMftftftftftftftftftftftftft
Black and
Sargent's.
Tan Shoe Polish at
St. John, N.B., May 1: -Sir
Charles Tupper bade farewell to
Canada today, sailing from this
city for England.
Trunks Suitcases
at Sargent's.
and Valises
Stationery, Photo Supplies,
Gramophones, Developing
and Printing*.
W.
