The ' 'No compromise on\nbudget\" banner, nailed to the\nstaff by Lloyd George and\nChurchill, has hot been accepted\nby the King as finally disposing\nof his hope to reconcile the warring factions. King Edward returned to London yesterday and\nintends to consult and advjse\nwith the party leaders.\nAs a.result of the recent government inquiry into questions\nof naval policy raised by Beres-\nford, the admiralty has announced the creation of a new department, entitled the Naval Mobilization Department.\nHURRICANE IN FLORIDA.\nNew Orleans, Oct. 15:- Several\nhundred lives were lost in the\nFlorida Keys as a result of a\nhurricane, according to a wireless\nmessage received here today.\nCasualties are estimated to be\nbetween eight and twelve hundred. The gale reached a velocity of one hundred miles an\nhour. A wireless from Tampa\nsays hundreds are dead there\nand the property loss will exceed\ntwo million dollars. Key West\nhas been practically destroyed.\nOut of three thousand men constructing a railroad on the Keys\nfour hundred are reported killed\nand hundreds more injured. A\nnumber of steamers due have\nnot been heard from.\nMobs In Europe Protest Against The\nExecution of Ferrer.\nLodon, October 15:- Professor\nFerrer has been sentenced to execution by the Spanish author-\nitier on a charge of inciting the\nrevolutionists in the recent riots\nat Barcelona. Further rioting\nwill probably follow. Socalists\nof Paris and London are holding\nmass meetings and fiery speeches\nare made denouncing the action\nof the Spanish authorities. King\nAlfonso and the Ministers have\nhave received letters threatening\nthe lives of the Royal infants if\nthe execution of Ferrier is carried\nout.\nParis, Oct. 15:- Ten thousand\nmen held a demonstration and\nmarched on the Spanish embassy\nto protest against the execution\nFerrer. The mob fired on the\npolice, tore up lamp posts, trees\nand formed a barricade which\nwas stormed by cavalry. The\nthe French radicals are determined to goad the Spanish into\nopen revolution against the Spanish throne. The Spanish embassy\nis surrounded by soldiers.\nRome, Oct. 15:- Twenty thousand workmen abandoned work\nto hold a mass meeting to protest\nagainst Spain's condemnation of\nFerrer. The whole garrison of\nRome is held in readiness to\nquell any disorders. The Spanish\nembassy is strongly guarded.\nNew Orleans:- Nearly three\nthousand lives have been lost in\na hurricane on the Yucatan and\nMexican coast. Most of the victims were fishermen.\nWinnipeg:- A blizzard is raging in western Ontario. Sixteen\ninches of snow has fallen.\nLondon, Oct. 15:- Edward W.\nBedford, a Canadian, gave himself up and confessed to the murder of Ethel Kinrad of Hamilton,\nOnt. He says he met a man in\nToronto who took him to Hamilton, pointed out the house and\ngave him five hundred dollars to\nshoot Ethel Kinrade. The police\nbelieve Bedford crazv. He was\nremanded to allow of inquiries\nbeing made.\nDetroit, Oct. 15:- The post season series for the world's baseball championship between Detroit and Pittsburg is so far a tie,\nsix games having been played,\neach winning three. The final\ngame will be played to-day.\nNanaimo, Oct. 16:- The Carlson murder trial has been postponed.\nLOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.\nWinnipeg, Oct. 16:- The last\nspike has been driven conpleting\nthe new transcontinental line\nfrom Winnipeg to Fort Willian.\nQuebec, Oct. 15:- The grand\njury returned \"no bill\" in the\ncase of Lindsay, ex-manager of\nthe Levis branch of the Bank of\nNorth America, accused of theft\nand obtaining money under false\npretences.\nVancouver:- A. B. Smith, manager of the G.T.P. telegraph service, is enroute to Prince Rupert\nto instal a telephone system and\narrange for the construction of\na telegraph line from Prince Rupert east.\nVancouver, Oct. 16:- Hon. John\nOliver has been appointed provincial Liberal leader. It is believed the election will be held\nin November. Both parties are\nholding campaign meetings\nthroughout the province.\nLawrei ce, Kadsas, Oct. 15:-\nEarl Bullock, aged eighteen, was\narrested by deputy sheriff Woods\non a charge of robbing a store.\nDesiring to see Wilson, cashier\nof the State Bank, the deputy\ntook the boy to the bank. While\nWoods was talking to Wilson,\nBullock took two revolvers out of\nhis clothes and orde.ed the two\nto throw up their hands. He\nthen marched them into the vault\nand locked the, door, snatched\none thousand dollars and fled.\nTwo hours later citizens released\nthe two men from the vault.\nPoliceman Pringle traced the boy\nto his mother's home and went\nthere to capture him. Bullock\nshot the policeman and made a\nsuccessful dash for liberty. A\nposse is in pursuit.\nDallas, Texas, Oct. 15:- There\nwere thirteen killed in a wreck\nnear Greenville on the Williams-\nville, Greenville and St. Louis\nrailroad.\nLos Angeles, Calif., Oct., 15:-\nDanny Webster defeated Abe\nAttell in a ten round bout and\nwon the world, s bantamweight\nchampionship.\nQ. T. P. Opening Coal Mines,\nThe coal properties known as\nthe Grand Trunk claims situated\nin Bulkley valley, near the mouth\nof Telkwa river, are to be developed this winter with a crew\nof fifteen to twenty men. This\nis according to information furnished by C. E. Betts, assistant\nengineer for the G. T. P.\nBy commencing work at this\ntime the properties can be put in\nshape to meet all requirements\nof the western end by the time\nrails are laid to the end of the\npresent contract. That is provided, always, that the seams\nhold their width and quality with\ndepth, which the next six months\nwill demonstrate.\nCE. Betts, assistant engineer,\nwill be superintendent, representing the engineering department of the G.T. P. under whose\ncontrol the work will be done.\nJoseph Goldworthy, a well\nknown miner of the Kootenays\nand the coal districts of the\nsouthern portion of the province\nand formerly of Rossland, will\nbe in charge as general foreman.\nAbout one month will be required to erect buildings, get\nsupplies on the ground and place\neverything in readiness before\nunderground operations are\nstarted.\nStation Men Getting Contracts.\nDuring the past week several\ncontracts have been signed by\nDuncan Ross and the station\nmen who propose to undertake\nthe work of clearing right pf way\nand opening up the rock cuts on\nthe four mile contract near town.\nFrank Hamann and partner have\ncontracted to move about thirty\nthousand yards of rock; Hugh\nGrant, A. Matheson and J. McLeod have a contract for forty\nthousand. H. Kelly and W. R. Kelly and J. Nelson of\nOotsa lake are in town buying\ntheir winter supplies. They will\ntake about thirty horses south\nfor wintering.\nR. J. McDonell of the Ingenica\nHotel returned from the coast on\nthe Simpson. On the same boat\nhe brought about thirty-five tons\nof supplies for the house.\nThe Babine Bonanza Mining &\nMilling Co. has been incorporated\nwith a capital of $500,000 and is\ntaking over the Dibble group,\nunder bond to James Cronin.\nPotato digging is in progress\nabout here and the crop is turning out well. C. V. Smith has\nsome fine tubers on exhibition,\nsome weighing two and one half\npounds each.\nJ. Czizek, a mining man from\nNew York City, came up the\nriver by the Port Simpson and, in\ncompany with Frank Brown, is\nnow at Nine Mile looking over\nsome prospects.\nH. E. Bodine and W. H. Wrig-\nley have returned from the Omineca river country where they\nhave been for the past three\nmonths, prospecting for lodes.\nBoth are highly pleased with the\nresults of their trip.\nMrs. J. C. Boyd and two children, Mrs. E. R. Cox and two\nchilden and Miss Loring left on\nFriday on the steamer Hazelton\nfor Vancouver where they will\nremain for the winter.\nAmos Godfrey and F. A. Jackson returned on Friday from a\ntrip to the coal district near\nGround Hog mountain. They\nreport a very hard trip, much\nsnow being encountered on the\nsummit.\nMoney Order Department of Hazelton\nPost Office Will Continue\nAll Winter.\nPostmaster Sargent is in receipt of a tejegram stating that\nthe Hazelton post office will be\nallowed to continue as a money\norder office all winter. In previous years this department has\nbeen closed November 1. The\nlack of a safe and convenient way\nof transferring money was keenly felt during the winter and the\npresent ruling by the department\nofficials at Ottawa will be appreciated.\nThe steamers Port Simpson,\nHazelton and Omineca arrived\nThursday with about thirty passengers and full loads of freight.\nThe Omineca was loaded with\nsupples for the grading camps,\nincluding six horses for Duncan\nRoss.\nGood progress is reported on\nclearing the right of way for the\nwagon road from headquarters\ncamp on the Skeena to Ross'\ncamp eight miles east of Hazelton.
