They
visited Rocher de Boule, Silver
Standard, Harris Mines and New
Hazelton, the shipping point for
the two latter properties and for
all the Nine, Four Mile and Glen
mountain ores. He was very
much struck with New Hazelton
as the shipping point and as an
engineer he agreed that it was
the ideal place both for shipping
and for a townsite. He was
greatly struck with the district
as an ore producer and he intends
to come back here in the spring
and spend the whole summer
in the interests of the Tacoma
Smelter.
Long Trip On A Wheel
H. B. Levi, formerly of Sealey,
and Chas. Raymond, Cleveland,
arrived in town on Saturday
night having completed a trip
from Edmonton to Hazelton by
bicycle. They
left this week for the south taking Thursday's train.
Some Big Vegetables
The farmers are getting in
their root crops and they are
1 getting some big stuff too. The
local gardeners are also getting
a lot of exceptionally big stuff.
The Ingineca Hotel is exhibiting
a potato, free from suckers and
perfectly clean that weighs over
three pounds. C. G. Harvey is
exhibiting three potatoes which
will run about three pounds each,
and also one (a freak) that goes
over four pounds. He has some
big squash and cabbage and says
that he is taking an exhibit of
vegetables clown to Vancouver
with him on Sunday next. The
, vegetables of Hazelton and dis-
| trict cannot be equaled any-
i where.
J. K. Ashman and John Ashman left last week for Copper
river where they will be connected with the National Finance Co's
coal fields for several months if
not all winter.
Shaft Down Eighty Feet
The shaft on the No. 1 vein on
the Harris property is now down
80 feet and Al. Harris reports
having six inches of fine ore on
the foot wall. The stoping on
the No. 1 is also progressing very
well, and as soon as the pack
train returns ten or twelve tons
of ore will be taken over to New
Hazelton, where nearly a car is
now waiting.
Work on the Nine Mile wagon
road is also being extended to
the Harris property, and everything is being put in shape for
the winter work. The boys will
soon start cutting out their own
snow road from the mine down
to the government wagon road.
No Meeting
The quarterly meeting of the
Hazelton Board of Trade was
called for last Tuesday night, but
as most of the officials were out
of town, and as only the vice-
president appeared, the meeting
was called off.
Wm. McDonald and his brother, Jas. McDonald, returned to
town on Monday night from a trip
out to the new coal property at
the head of the Kitseukla river.
Wm. McDonald went out to see
what had been done by the two
men he sent in to prospect. He
found a good trail cut for four
miles up the river and also considerable work done on the coal.
There are several holes and a fine
deposit of coal is exposed. Two
more seams were also discovered
and there is one fine seam twelve
feet wide.
Mr. McDonald brought back
about fifty pounds of samples
with him and these he will take
down to Vancouver to have assayed, and also to place on exhibition. On the dump at the present they have at least a half ton
of first-class coking coal, and the
new samples which were brought
in are much better than the first.
As stated in these columns before, Mr. McDonald's coal is over
the summit from the Copper River
coal, and it is now believed that
the Kitsegukla coal will be even
better than the Copper River
stuff. The samples which were
taken off the surface during the
last summer and assayed by Mr.
O'Sullivan showed 60.5 per cent,
coke, or only 10 per cent, lower
than the Copper River coal taken
from a depth of 100 feet. Mr.
O'Sullivan stated that this was
some of the finest coking coal he
had ever assayed - for surface
samples.
Mr. McDonald has had several
interested parties looking at the
samples, but as yet he has not
decided what he will do with it.
Most likely he will form a joint
stock company and develop the
property, and put the coal on the
market themselves. In case this
plan is followed out it will be a
great boom to New Hazelton and
the district surrownding, as fuel
will be a serious problem within
a very few years. This coal is
first-class for domestic and steam
purposes.
Got a Picture
W. W. Wrathall took a view of
a group of ore exhibits at the
rear of Rosenthal, Harris & DeVoin's office last Saturday. The
exhibit was made up of samples
from all the important properties
in the district, including Ground
Hog coal.
RAILS REACH NEW HAZELTON
FREIGHT SOON BE DELIVERED
Track-Layer Passed Through the Town on Tuesday==Siding is Now
Laid=-Supt. He
ings, which will include freight, had received no instructions
sheds, offices, store houses and, whatever as to any winter ter-
homes for the freight officials.
On Saturday Gen. Supt. W.
C. C. Mehan arrived m town on
his private car, and he spent the
next two or three days here
watching the track-laying machine which is in charge of Mr.
Dan Dempsey, one of the best
railway men on the line.
Mr. Mehan is very anxious to
get the siding laid at New Hazelton and to begin hauling freight
to this point.
minals. As far as he knew the
terminals would be as far east of
Prince Rupert as it was possible
to get the track.
A Great Townsite
Aid. Geo. He decided that the outlook
is very promising for a big business and has decided to put a
boat on as soon as the ice is out
in the spring. He will leave in a
week or so for Vancouver to order the launch and have it
shipped up this winter while the
snow is on the ground. The boat
will be a gasoline power four ton
freight boat which will make
about eight or ten miles an hour
loaded.
BIG GOLD QUARTZ
NEAR TELKWA
Hugh McKay Back From The New
District-Rock Assays $140 With
$94 In Gold
A Slight Error
In last week's issue a slight
error occurred in connection
with the article on Silver Standard. It was said that a compressor plant and steam drills
had been ordered. The drills are
not steam drills, but air drills.
Mr. Jardine Promoted
R. C. Jardine's host of friends
in Hazelton and throughout the
entire northern interior will extend hearty congratulations to
him upon his promotion in the
service of Kelly Douglas Co. Mr.
Jardine has for years been the
travelling salesman for the firm
and was a frequent visitor here.
He is now manager taking the
place of W. J. M. Sandle who
who has gone to Victoria.
A large number of people have
been across the river to see the
track laying machine at work.
W. W. Wrathall has secured several good pictures of it. The
machine is now miles past New
Hazelton.
A big gold strike has been
made about twelve miles from
Telkwa just opposite the head of
Deep Creek and on the Babine
slope. Some weeks ago Dick
Rogers and Geo. Hazelton ran
'onto what is one of the most
promising gold quartz countries
in the northern interior. Hugh
McKay was prospecting around
! Owen Lake and as soon as he
i heard of it he started for the new-
camp. It was late in the season
and he was there about the same
time as several others and had to
come back on account of the
snow. McKay, however, saw
j the rock and he sized up the
1 country which he says is a perfect gold bearing formation and
he looks for a big rush up there in
the spring and he predicts that
the new district will be one of
the must important. The rock
brought down gave assays of $90
and $94 in gold. The piece that
gave the larger assay also went
!$17 in silver and about $29 in
copper, making a total of $140.
i Reports of this strike had reach-
1 ed town before, but no no one had
| been in who had seen the district.
Mr. McKay has holdings in the
Owen Lake district, close to
Brown and Woods, and he says
that if the assays which Brown
had run are as good as the report
that Brown and Woods have an
immense proposition.
Beginning with this week the
mail stage to Aldermere will
leave Hazelton on Monday and
Thursday mornings. Last week
Messrs. Stewart and Welch, contractors for the construction of
the G. T. P., announced officially
the concentration of all their operating machinery at New Hazelton. In other words, all work on
this end of the line will be managed from New Hazelton and
that point will also be the distributing point for all supplies, and
it will be the site of the pay office
for.the whole works until the
road is completed. This move
was taken to enable the office
staff to handle the work with
greater ease and despatch. At
the same time it brings a large
number of people to that town as
permanent residents. The staffs
of the contractors, together with
those who follow along to trade
with the company, will in itself
make a nice little town.
At the same time it was announced officially that the Silver
Standard mine would ship from
New Hazelton, that big ore sheds i
would be erected this fall and
that offices and assay offices also
would be opened. The mine will
employ a big force of men, and
all the supplies are purchased in
New Hazelton.
Besides Silver Standard mine,;
the Harris Mines will ship regu-
larly from New Hazelton. They |
have a car load of ore there now j
waiting for the first train to pick
it up and take it to Prince Rupert.
These mines will ship at least a |
car load a month all winter, and
possibly that amount will be
doubled.
This week the Crand Trunk
Pacific railway reached the town i
and the siding is laid. Before!
another issue of the Herald it is |
safe to say that freight trains
will be running into the town.
This will enable the business men
to get their supplies in in good
shape, and enable them to cope
with the rapidly increasing business.
The people of New Hazelton
have taken on a most optimistic
spirit, and they are confident the
immediate future will bring them
big returns for their patience in
the past. Steps are now being
taken to get the station site located, the building erected and
the passenger and freight service;
extended to this point. That they
will be successful is a safe bet.
New Hazelton is a thriving
little town of about three hundred
population. This population is
growing rapidly. The floating
population is also increasing, and
will continue to increase. New
buildings are being erected, and
contracts have been awarded for
can be placed on the ground work I
will be proceeded with. The G.!
T.P. will not be slow in recognizing the necessity of a freight and j
passenger service to New Hazelton and there is very little doubt
but that the line will be extended
from Sealey to that point within
the next few days. New Hazelton is an important point. In fact
it is one of the most important
on the entire western end of the
road, and before the winter is
well advanced it will be the largest town and will furnish the
railway with more business than
all other points from Prince Rupert east to New Hazelton put
together.
l!lli(llli!!lll!l!nillllllllllll!!i!lllllliilllll!llllllliillliilllllli!illlll!illlllililli!|
HAZELTON to 1
VANCOUVER 1
Send to Merryfield & Co., Prince Rupert, for wholesale grocery price list.
It means big money to you.
\wm
The
Grand Trunk
Railway
System
Double Track Route
For all points east
of Chicago is unexcelled. During his long association with the red men he has
absorbed their poetic language
and quaint mannerisms.
Menace of Extinction
"Indians stand face to face
with the menace of extinction,"
said he, "the danger is real, overpowering, omnipresent. With
the dogged and silent persistence
which is one of the characteristics
of the nation they are fighting it
desperately. Year by year the
chiefs look with sorrow upon the
wickiups depleted of the young
bucks and squaws. Civilization
has taken its toll, not in the improvement and uplifting of the
race, but by degrading and debasing it to the level of the lowest classes of the whites."
"To the Indian," he continued,
"there are few attractions in
wealth. He claims the existence
due to all mankind and asks no
more. I have said to young
braves, 'Why do you not go out
into the world and earn money
and become like the white men?'
They have replied, 'We have fish
and the flesh of the deer. Our
woods are full of game and the
Indian corn grows plentifully in
our fields. The Great Spirit is
good and we become fat. Let
the white man slave while we
enjoy the stamping grounds of
our old bucks.' This is not a
spirit of laziness as some people
would point out, but evidence of
the red man's reluctance to
change his condition.
Fall Before Civilization
"To the Indian everything has
a meaning," averred Mr. Loring.
"Nothing is beautiful or artistic
to him unless it carries a message, and in my mind their poetic
nature upholds the theory that the
race sprang from the Japanese,"
Mr. Loring believed that the
reason for the high death rate
among the Indians was on account of their efforts to conform
to the style of living of the white
man. Wearing heavy modern
clothing did not agree with them I
and their mode of life was con-1
ducive to tuberculosis, which was
a very prevalent disease among
them. The many deformities
were the result of intermarrying.
Like the buffalo, the nation.
was being driven farther away
year by year at the behest of the
white men, and it was only a;
question of time before their en-
tire extermination.
Mr. Loring evinced deep feel-1
ing for the Indians during the
course of his conversation, invar- S
iahly referring to them as "his
people. "Sun.
W.
