I
FOUR MILE
HILL
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE
HILL AND THE WORK
BEING DONE
hc
LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS
ws.
Four Mile hill, lying* just north
of Bulkley river and between
Four Mile and Six Mile creeks,
on the Babine trail, is a camp
that is being brought into prominence by the fine showings that
are being opened up by the prospectors owning claims there.
Some fourteen or fifteen claims
were located about a year ago
and since then such development
has been done as means would
permit. The country rock looks
the same as the rock on Nine
Mile in which ore occurs and if
not a continuation is more than
likely to be a recurrence of the
same formation.
The top of this hill is not more
than a thousand feet above the
Bulkley river and within a mile
of the railway line, on the opposite side of the river.
Six or seven separate veins are
known to exist on the different
claims and at least two of them
are five to six feet wide. One
of the claim owners took samples
from his property to the coast
last fall. Separate samples were
made of the ore from each wall
to the center of the vein. From
the hanging side the assay value
was 358 ounces of silver to the
ton and the foot wall side 46
ounces. Another prospector had
returns of $86 in silver and lead,
including a few dollars in gold.
This hill is already bare of
I snow and two of the prospectors
I interested on the hill are at work
on their claims. Tom Stephenson
tis deepening a shaft started last
fall and Harry Thoen is driving
jan open cut.
Being situated so close to the
line of the railway, with no transportation difficulties to contend
Lvith, the showings on this hill
jihould come in for enough development this year to fully deter-
linine their worth.
Another Boat for Upper Skeena.
While R. H. Gerow was in I
Vancouver two weeks ago he inspected the new boat for the
Ipper river just completed at
lie Wallace shipyards. The final
pat of paint was being put on ;
lie hull and in a few days she
jlould be ready for the water,
jasolene engines of 65 horse-
l)wer were installed and the
kssel is designed to carry thirty
Ins of freight At the yards
[jr. Gerow was told that she is
ring built by the Packers As-
j-ciation to ply between Kitselas
fid Hazelton. Instead of the
I'ual stern wheel she is driven
 a propellor.
A. C. Aldous is in Bulkley valley on a business trip.
Lots of grub at C. V. This is Mr. Campbell's first
visit to the property since work
was started.
Friday morning a small pack
train was sent out to Twenty Mile
on Bear river with supplies for
the Buckskin Group. It will be
necessary to have all the supplies
for the 300 foot tunnel landed on
the far side of Bear river before
high water.
Arthur Skelhorne and W. J.
Bryan returned from Nine Mile
Friday afternoon. They called
at the Silver Cup camp but did
not go up to the tunnel. The
face of the tunnel is now in over
150 feet and a crosscut to determine the width of the vein will
be started immediately.
News by Telegraph*
A SERIES OF BANK HOLD-UPS IN
DIFFERENT PARTS OF
THE COUNTRY
THETDNNELONTHE
BUCKSKIN
THE NEW TUNNEL NOW WELL
UNDER WAY
I'The first pack train of the sea-
ln left town Wednesday, taking
Applies out to a gang of right of
toy men near Morieetown.
The tunnel on the Buckskin
group on Bear river, the largest
piece of development yet undertaken on a raw prospect, was in
ten feet when Bob Montgomery,
one of the miners, came to town
for supplies this week. This
land is in the valleys of the
Skeena, Bulkley, Kispiox, and
Kitwangar rivers and will grow
all the crops that are grown in
the north temperate zone. It is
eminently suited for diversified
farming but many people believe
dairying will be the leading industry with the farmers. The
mining of coal and metals will
draw a large population and create a home market for what the
farmer has to sell.
Expressed in acres the amount
of farm land is large but in proportion to the whole country it is
small.
Of coal the amount is practically unlimited. The formation
is which coal occurs is found in
practically every valley and new
areas with seams of workable
thickness are being found every
year. A large part of the country
has not been prospected and cannot but offer a favorable field for
exploration.
In lode mining the development so far fas been most flattering for a future industry of
great value. Gold, silver, copper
and lead have been found in
paying quantities in almost every
direction. Close to Hazelton, on
Nine Mile mountain, one property has been proved to be a mine
and a big one. Bulkley valley is
bordered on both sides by mountains on which some hundreds of
claims have been located. Once
rails are laid into the valley ore
shipments can be made profitably
and a constantly increasing force
of men employed at the mines.
The timber supply is represented by the spruce and cedar
forests covering the mountain
slopes and in some places spreading over the valley lands. These
forests are not extensive enough
to support a large business in
exporting lumber but will provide plentifully for all the requirements of the immediate vicinity.
Water power along the G. T. P.
is practically unlimited. This
may mean but little now but the
time is not far distant when it
will be developed and turned into
a source of wealth.
Extensive clay deposits are
ready to hand whenever a demand shall arise for the products
of the brick and tile factory.
In the eastern part of the district is a gold placer country that
was world famous forty years
ago but from which latterly the
output has sunk to small pro
portions owing to the high cost
of supplies, the utter impossibility
of transporting heavy machinery
and the richest ground being
worked out. Signs of a renewed
activity are already apparent and
commencing this summer will be
seen the first movement toward
establishing large plants and recovering the millions still lying
in the gravel.
FOR CLEAN MONEY
The associated Boards of Trade
in southeastern B. C. at their
meeting recently passed resolutions advocating the coinage of
a Canadian silver dollar and
abolishing the filthy bills that
are now being handled.
Under favorable conditions one
and two dollar bills soon get
dirty enough to disgust anyone
but it is only in this part of the
country where we get the full
benefit of a filthy currency. One
hundred and eighty miles from
a bank paper money is never retired from circulation as long
as the denomination is recognizable.
Outside of the dirt and unsightly appearance paper money
is claimed to be responsible for
the transmission of more or less
disease. Another argument for
the coinage of silver dollars is
that Canada is now the second
silver producing country in the
world, second only to the United
States, and any legitimate demand that can be created for the
white metal is bound to help the
silver market.
Essington Hotel
[American and European Plan]
Cafe Service Best in tne Northwest
R.
