The World, after a review of the field, persuades\nitself that at the close, of the impending election Mr. Borden will have a\nmajority of three in a full house.\nAnyone who is familiar with the case\nwill agree tbat it needed an agile\narithmetician, with an exceptionally\nfull stock of optimism, to figure out\neven this unpromising result. He\ncertainly gave everything except Liberal hive- to the Conservatives. There\nis a Liberal calculation in circulation\nbased on quile the opposite principle.\nIt concedes every constituency that\nlias ihe faintest possible chance of\nbeing found in the Conservative column, and figures out a majority of\nten for the Liberal party. This is\nwithoul a shadow of doubt the irreducible minimum. The wildest figurer.\nunless be started out determined to\nwipe out the Liberal majority with\nhis- pencil, could not get. below that\nfigure.\nThe Liberal majority in the House\nai the present moment is 74. Every\n,seat formerly held by a Liberal has\nbeen retained In the bye-elections of\nthe past two or three years, with two\nexceptions. The exceptions were Colchester (and the means by which that\nwas won are now only too apparent)\nand London, where no Liberal candidate ran. Several constituencies held\nby opponents of the Government were\nredeemed in bye-elections. The bye-\nelections therefore do not encourage\nthe Conservatives to hope that'they\ncan materially reduce the Government's majority.
