The Lulu Island bridge was found open in a
unexplained way on Wednesday evening, and since then a gasoline launch
has been discovered missing.
About 11 p, ni., a man started to
walk across tbe bridge from the island side, and when he reached the
draw span, to bis surprise, it was
partly open, at least to the width of
the floor. Thinking that some accident had perchance befallen the
bridge tender, W. Furness, he went
back to the caretaker's house, and
aroused the occupants, only to find
that the bridge had been left closed.
A man thoroughly familiar with the
circumstances can use a. wrench with
which to operate the bridge.
The sequel to this incident transpired last evening. Some time since
a man going to the north left in the
custody of Mr. Furness a gasoline
power boat, and this was moored at a
point where only the high tide could
reach it. The engines had been taken
off tbe launch and placed in a cabin
adjoining. This was broken into and
the engines removed. The boat is
gone, and there is no trace of the
party responsible.
The police have a theory that the
bridge may have been purposely opened to dela^ and even endanger anyone attempting a rescue from the city
side. High tide in the river was at
1:30 a. m. Thursday morning.
Owing to the interval between the
two incidents, which now appear to
have some connection, the difficulty
of tracing the culprit is increased.
There Is nothing in the cabin to offer a clue.
BAND PLAYED AT ALBERT
CRESCENT TO BIG CROWD
Second Concert of Season Was Greatly AppreciatedMore Instruments
and Change in Orchestra.
vocal ami Instrumental elections was ,m|(, tno assessment wlll be pTOveBtefl
Plea Made for Anarchist Trooper.
San Francisco, July 2U. General
Funston hus forwarded to the war department a plea for mercy in behalf
"' Sergt.
