RUNS TRAINS
OFFICIALS OF THE ROAD 01 TIMIS
TIC AS TO FUTURE
Schedule of Tr.lns Arranged Starts
on Monday Will Cany Malls-
Announcement of Further
Coin.'ruction
The Nicola railway is now entirely
under the control of the C. P. R. and
the first train under the new management arrived in Nicola on Monday. On
hoard the train were several officials of
the C. P. R., among Ihem being H. E.
Beasley, assistant superintendent of the
Pacific division; H. G. Walkem, divisional engineer; G. Munro, road master;
S. L. Prenter, Z. Choate and the traveling auditor of the company, who at once
installed W. Potter, late of Spuzzum,as
agent for the company.
T. 0. Townley, who is looking after
the right of way on behalf of the company, was on the train, as were also J.
Maconell, f, Hoy and A. Muir, of the
contracting firm of Loss, Maedonell &
Co. The train was in charge of W.
Krisken, who will act as conductor on
the regular train.
A preliminary schedule has been arranged as follows: Leaving Spences
Kricge every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at 8 a. m., the train will call at
various points on the road, arriving at
Nicola at 11 a. m., the train will leave
the same day at 2 p.m. arriving at the
Hridge at 5 p.m, This service will start
on Monday, April 1st, and the mails will
be carried on the train on and after this
date.
The action of the company in thus
taking hold of the mail contract at
once is to be commended, as it will undoubtedly prove of the highest convenience to the business interests of the
valley.
M. P. Stewart has been awarded the
contract for carrying the mail between
lhe station and the post office.
The officials of the road are very optimistic with regard to the future of
the district and are well pleased with
the rapid progress which is being made
in its development, more especially as
regards the coal, which they expect to
be shipping in large quantities before
the end of the present year.
The outlook is so decidedly good that
in the course of the next few weeks, an
official announcement may be expected, and before the fall Nicola will become the headquarters of construction
work.
and the audience quite entered into the
humor of lhe thing, as was evident by
the almost continuous bursts of laughter m the witnesses replied to the questions of the various counsel. There
was considerable merriment before the
jury could be empanelled and sworn,
many of the gentlemen called being rejected for various defects, their vocations in many casts leading to their rejection.
The case was, Perkins and Jenkpot,
a breach of promise suit. Those who
took part in the case showed considerable ability and deserve great credit for
the manner in which they entertained
the public.
LARGE ORE BODIES:^T:r.^i;r;,rSTARTNEWBRIDGE
INDEPENDENT OROUP HAS LARGE
AREA OF LOW ORADE OKI.
Faater Holiday Arrangement!.
The Bank of Montreal will be closed
m Good Friday and Easter Monday.
All stores and business houses will
close on Good Friday.
On Good Friday and Easter Monday
the telephone office will only be open
for business from 9 to 10:30 in the
morning and from four to five in the
afternoon, at on Sundays.
Methodist Church services on Easter
Sunday as follows: Nicola, 11 a.m.,
and 7:30 p. m.; Lower Nicola, 3 p. m.,
and 7:30 p. m. The schists
are mica schists, and they enclose narrow bands of white crystalline limestone. They dip at about 65 degrees
are low, but the ore body is an enormous one. The group consists of u n
claims, which have all bet n staked on j
the same contact, running down Into.
the Coldwater river.
Numerous other claims wen visiu-d
in this giction of country, amon;< them
being the Keruna group on Bear creek
and the Boulder creek camp east of
Bear creek. The former lies in the
same series of altered sedimentary
rocks as were described on the St. Lawrence group. These are cut by dikes of
a porphyritic character which strike
about 330 degrees. The ore occurs as
little veins and bunches in the sediments
at and near the contact of the dikes,
The minerals found are pyrite, chalcopy-
rite and pyrrhotite, and the values are
in gold and silver.
At Boulder creek the claims are located in a soft green serpentine, which
often has a schistose structure developed in it, and which appears to be an altered volcanic rock.
The ore bodies are in blanket veins
interbedded with the country rock, and
I the minerals occurring are pyrite, chal-
The values
WILL 3EGIN CONSTRUCTION ON
MONDAY -USE LOCAL TIMBER
towards the granite, and are cat by
some large and highly mineralized dikes' ~!~ ~TT" L-j I" "7 ""
.B , ,. , , . The values are
high in copper, gold and silver, and altogether the property has the earmarks
of a permanent producing camp.
Another important group of claims is
the Independent group owned by Messrs
Johnson, Holmes & Henning, and situated on the summit of the divide between Bear creek and the Coldwater
river. This group is also on th! contact
of the granite body with mica schists.
Here the ore body is a highly moralized zone of rock extending from the edge
of the schists about 1000 feet westward
into the granil e. Two thousand feet
away from the schists the granite becomes gneissic, though still holding inclusions of the mica schists. No sharp
line of contact could be discovered between the ore body and the unaltered
granite, only that the mineralization by
sulphides appears to gradually decrease
until at 1200 feet away from the schists
it disappears. The ore body is highly
altered and kaolinized, where mineralization is greatest, and it appears to be
of the nature of a dike of granite porphyry intruded between the schists and
the granite, though it is possible it may
only be a mineralization and alteration
of the same granite at and near the
contact with the schists. Intensions of
mica schist occur in the un:il ered granite as well as in the ore body. The
greatest alteration is about the centre
of the mineralized zone, where a small
vein of pure iron and copper sulphides
cuts the porphyry at an angle of 45 degrees. The feldspar here is kaolinized
though the quartz is unaltered and some
Conservative Association.
A general meeting of the Nicola Valley Conservative Assooiati' n will be
held in the Smith cottage, Coutlee, on
Saturday afternoon, March 30th, at
2:30 o'clock. Cunningham of Vancouver spent
the past week itt this section.
A special meeting of Court Nicola, A.
0. F., will beheld on Friday evening,
the 5th.
Owing to the enormous rise in the
price of platinum in the last year, and
to the fact that the basin of the Tulameen river once produced a larger
amount of platinum than any other part
of North America, it is altogether probable that attempts will be made by interested parties in the near future to
locate the source of the metal in this
district, or to work some of the higher
branch deposits of gravel which are
known to carry platinum but which formerly necessitated too large an outlay
of capital to work.
Prof. J. F. Kemp spent about three
months of the summer of 1900 in investigating the geology of the platinum,
and though he was not successful in
finding any large bodies of rock which
could be profitably mined for platinum,
he was able to throw a great deal of
light on the origin and occurrence of the
metal. His results are embodied in Bulletin 193 of the United States Geological Survey.
The Tulameen section of the country
presents a great many more difficulties
to the prospector than the Similkameen
country.
The former is very heavily timbered,
and trails are few and rough. Rock exposures, however, are more common,
except where the country is underlaid
by the schists and limestones, as in the
upper parts of Bear creek.
Here the growth of timber is heavier
than usual, and the country is so heavily covered with drift that rock exposures very rarely occur, and it has only
been by much labor that ore bodies
have been located.
It is here though that conditions for
the formation of ore bodies are so favorable that other important discoveries
are to be expected.
Site of Bridge.-Arrangements as to
Right oi Way.-A. Stevenson in
Nicola Making Necessary
Arrangements.
Arthur Stevenson, road superintendent of Yale district, arrived in Nicola
on Sunday afternoon, and at once proceeded on Monday, in accordance with
instructions received from the lands and
works department, to look over the site
for the new bridge over the Nicola river, the construction of which is to be
gone on with without delay.
The site for the bridge is a continuation of the boundary line between the
Presbyterian and Methodist church
properties, and after looking over the
site Mr. Stevenson visited Lower Nicola
where arrangements were made with J.
A. Menzies, of the sawmill there, by
which timber for the pile driver will be
in place on Monday, ready for the starting of operations.
Mr. Menzies will also supply much of
the timber to be used in the constructions of the bridge. The hammer to be
used in the work is on the way from
Kamloops and will probably be in place
by Monday, when active operations under the superintendency of Rich. Trodden, of this town, will begin on the construction of the bridge.
It is understood that amicable arrangements are being made with the
trustees of the properties concerned, so
that there will be no delay in the work,
and the question of right of way arranged so that there will be no delay in
opening up a road to connect with the
bridge.
BUSINESS LOCALS.
640 acres of Coal land for sale on R.
Gulliford's ranch, at Aspen Grove,
B.
