I he hall was\ncrowded to its full capacity and\nthe committee had left nothing\nundone for the comfort and\npleasure ol their guests. A\nsumptuous repast was served\nabout midnight at the residence\nof Mrs. Marshall and the many\nchoice delicacies which had\nbeen prepared were done justice\ntoo. It was near 4 a. m. that\nthe merry party broke up and\nit was unanimous that Merritt\nUnion knew how to entertain\ntheir guests in royal style.\nB. P. Little, superintendent\nof the Diamond Vale and Mrs\nLittle returned on Mouday\nfrom a trip to the coast.\nJ. Hogan has purchased the\nlot at the corner ol Garcia\nstret and Nicola avenue and\nwill erect a large building to\nbe used as a boarding and\nlodging house.\nThe C. P. R. bridge gang\nare at work putting in a new\nspan on the railway bridge\nacross the Coldwater river to\nMiddlesboro' colleries.\nJ. A. Menzies will commence\nthe construction of two cottages\non his lot next week.\nThe Miners Union are making arrangements for the building of a large hall. The building will be up to-date, the upper portion will be arranged\nfor lodge room and the ground\nfloor will be used for a public\nhall\nOn Tuesday eveniug Hy-\nlands hall was the scene of a\nvery enjoyable party, the occasion being a leap year dance\nheld by the ladies of Merritt.\nArrangements had only been\nmade a few days before, but\nthey were complete and guests\nwere in attendance from differ\nent parts of the valley who enjoyed themselves to the utmost.\nAt midnight a lunch fit for a\nking was served above the hall\nand it was evident that the\nAt Home in Pooley's Hall\nMonday Evening.\nOn Monday evening, March 2nd,\nwhat may well he called the dance\nof the season was held in Pooley's\nhall. Nicola. The invitations of\nthe hostess, Mrs. Pooley, were well\nresponded to and the hall which\nwas tastefully decorated, proved if\nanything rather too small for the\ngathered assembly. A capital program had been arranged and copies\ntastefully got up were posted up at\neach end of the room, these were\nagain set off by the Tamerton ranch\nbrand worked in fine leaves.\nThe music was excellent; the\norchestra consisting of piano, violin\nand flute, the latter adding greatly\nto the beauty of the pieces played.\nA delightful supper was served\nin the Nicola Athletic Association\nrooms, and full justice was done\nto the good things provided. At\nthe close of supper Dr. Tutill favored the company with a solo, most\nappropriate to the occasion, \"Good\nCompany,\" the chorus being taken\nup by all present. The\ncompany is to co operate in the\nsubdivision of the land, paying\nthree fourths of the expenses.\nThe company also agrees, as\nfar as possible, to purchase all\nsupplies from local merchants,\nand to start actual construction\nnot later than June 1st and to\nproceed with actual construction till completed in British\nColumbia. The company will\nuse only white labor unless it\ncan be shown to the satisfac\ntion of the government that it\nis impossible to obtain this.\nTwo thousand acres of land\nare to be surveyed as a town-\nsite.\nSTOCK RAISED IN PRICE. Smith president of the\nDiamond Vale Coal company arrived at Merritt today.\nN. J. H. Barwick the harness\nand saddler, was at Merritt yester-\n011 a business trip.\n1 government having only 15 members and the opposition 31. The\nconservatives are greatly elated for\nnesides having to contend with the\nordinary resources of the defeated\nliberal government, Hon. Wm.\nPugsley, minister of public works in\nthe Laurier government, lent the\ngovernment the full force of his\ninfluence, making promises of public works in return for the support\nof the government candidates.\nPremier Robinson narrowly escaped defeat in Westmoreland\nwhere the liberals carried all four\nseats.\nFour members of the government were defeated.\nThis is the first occassion on\nwhich the secret ballot has been\nused in New Brunswick, and Conservatives naturally declare that the\nfirst occasion, when men could\nvote exactly as they pleased has\nshown the exact opinion of the people. The conservative leader, Mr.\nHaztn, made a big fight on the\nsecret ballot plank, and it was largely through his efforts that this\nchange in the method of voting was\nmade.\nFrank M. Davis arrived in Nicol;. on Monday and is visiting with\nfriends.\nDisastrous Fire.\nIn a fire which completely\ndestroyed the common sch.ol\nbuilding in Collingwood, Ohio,\na suburb of Cleveland on Wednesday, one hundred children\nlost their lives. The fire was\nstarted by an overheated furnace. The flames quickly spread\nbut a panic ensued when the\nbuilding filled with smoke, and\nthe 400 children attempted to\nescape. The pupils are most\nlittle children ranging in age\nfrom nine to ten years.\nladies eff >rts were appreciated\nby the manner in which justice\nwas done the spread. The\ndancing was continued until a\nlater hour.\nJ. E. Miller, inspector of in\nland revenue, spent several\ndays at Merritt this week on\ngovernment business. A bonded warehouse will be established with John Collett as excise\nofficer.\nThe brewery will in a very-\nshort time be turning out local\nbeer, the first brew being near\nready. Additional buildings\nwill also be erected shortly.\nOfficials Visit.\nThe private car Lillooet of General Superintendent F. F. Buttetd,\nwas attached to Tuesday's train\nand was left at Middlesboro' Colleries. Among the party were Mr,\nand Mrs. Busteed, Superintendent\nJ. T. Arundel, Divisional Engineers, C. E. Cartwright and H. B.\nWalkem, Trainmaster S. L. Pren-\nter, andW. H. Armstrong, manager of the Nicola Valley Coal & j\nCoke company's property. After\nthe party had looked over the coal\nmine and property they returned to\nSpences Bridge by special train,\nKamloops Presbytery.\nThe meeting of the Kamloops Presbytery held at Kamloops last, week was\nwell attended and considerable business\nwas transacted. Among those appointed to the general assembly which will\nmeet in Winnipeg in June, was the Rev.\nD. K. Allan of Nicola. Applications\nwere received from Princeton and\nQuesnel which are mission stations, to\nbe raised to the status of augmented\ncongregations. These were granted.\nAmong the business items was the\nadoption of a scheme for congregations\nto pay in part the traveling expenses of\ncommissioners to the genera! assembly.\nThe closing hours were spent in a discussion on church union, in which every\nmember took part. Opinion seemed\npretty evenly divided on the subject.\nWork Progressing Satisfactorily With\nDevelopment Shipments of Ooal\nSent to Vancouver and\nWill Be Increased.\nThe very fine showing made by\nthe Diamond Vale Iron & Coal\nMines, of late has been a source of\ngratification to the officials and the\nmany shareholders in Vancouver,\nsays the. News-Advertiser. Since\nthe property has got into the producing class, there is a steady demand for this stock, and 100,000\nhave been sold, according to the\nstatement of the president, T. J.\nSmith. The price was 20 cents,\nbut the last has been sold at that\nfigure, and an increase has been\nmade to 25 cents.\nThe output at present is sixty\ntons per day and this will shortly\nbe increased when the permanent\nequipment now in course of construction is completed. The force\nof men will also be increased by\nabout thirty when the facilities are\nin place.\nB. P. Little the superintendent,\nreturned from Vancouver on Monday, where he had been on company's business and was acconr\npanied by Benjamin Browett, who\nwill be superintendent under Mr.\nLittle, who, until the present has\nlooked after all the engineering,\naud with the expansion of operations another practical official is\nnecessary. Mr. Browett has for\nsome time been with the Western\nFuel company at Nanaimo.\nThe company are shipping three\ncars of coal a week to the coast and\nthis amount will be increased in a\nvery short time. The quality is of\nthe best and besides having demand\nfor same at the coast has a good\nmarket locally. With the present\nprogress, no difficulty whatever is\nexpected in carrying out the estimate, namely, that 300 tons per\nday will be produced by midsummer and 500 tons per day by the\nend of this vear.\nConstables Clark and Graham\nraided two Chinese houses iu town\nthis morning and found a large\nquantity of whisky on the premises\nand confiscated a portion of it.\nFurther developments will be forthcoming in a few days.\nVernon hockey team has asked\nthe Nicola team for a match, and\nif the ice continues good, a game\nmay be expected at an early date.\nFred Riley is laid up with an\nattack of influenza,\nWill Finance Winnipeg.\nMembers of the City Council of\nWinnipeg in informal session Friday\nafternoon, unanimously agreed to accept\na proposition presented by Comptroller\nEvans and Alderman Riley, as a result\nof their trip to Montreal, by which the\nthe Bank of Montreal will finance the\ncity.\nThe bank offers to place 1,500,000\npounds of the city's securities on the\nLondon market. The proceeds from the\nsale of those securties will clean up the\noutstanding current liabilities, provide\nfor new work and give the city at least\n$1,000,000 in cash to put back into the\nsinking fund. The bank agrees also to\nallow an overdraft of $2,000,000 if\nnecessary, within the next five months.
