Articles were closed last night
for the mill and the sportsmen of Nelson are promised by all-odds the finest
spurring exhibition ever brought off
in the city. Manager Armstrong of
the Rossland Athletic club, who engineered the meeting at Rossland, has
been in the city for seveial days iu
connection with the arrangements for
the exhibition, and last night the final
details were settled, a $r>0 deposit being put up to ensure the contest coming off. May 10 was selected as the
best date for the affair in order that
tlie men might have an opportunity to
get into shape befoie the meeting.
Both are now in semitruining and a
couple of weeks work will euBily put
them in splendid condition.
Churlie Goff hulls from Spokane and
Is a boxer of very considerable ability. In the fight with Hums at Kossland he acted gamely and took much
punishment before receiving the blow
tbut put him out of business. At no
stage of the game had he Burns going
and it was generally thought that a
little more aggression at that juncture
would huve reversed the tubles. Jimmy Burns is a Chicugo man and has
fought a number of good buttles and
been successful in tlie majority of
them. He is a heavier man thun Goff
and generally regarded as somewhut
slower. Golf's quickness will therefore offset Burns' weight; nnd the
concensus of opinion among those ut
the ringside in their battle at Koss-
lund was that had Golf cjnteuted himself with getting awuy after delivering the blows his science enabled him
to plate, instead of pushing the fighting from the stnrt, he would have de-
fcute4 his big opponent. Golf was
Corbett's tiniucr in one of the ex-
chumpion's lights. Captain Mac-
donell joined the party at Sandon.
Mr. Bosworth'b visit to the country
is likely to inaugurate some changes
in freight facilities or rates, as he is
the couit of final appeal in matters
relating to the hauling of freight.
Business is quiet about the C P. R.
depot, a decided lull in freight traffic
having put in an appearance. This
is a perfectly natnral condition of
affairs and crops up annually at tbis
season of tbe year. The reason is that
business men generally are withholding shipments until the lake rail rates
take efl'eet,. As navigation opens at
the end_of thu week or rather the
middle of next week, it is safe to
predict a very lively rush of freight
by the middle of May when the first
installment of shipments over the
Luke Superior waterway is about dhe
to reach Nelson. W. R. Maclnnee,
weBt-rn freight manager, Btated yesterday that the company is now making contracts on the lake rail rate
basis. The local railroad people have
taken advantage of the few duys rest
afforded them by cleaning up the
yard and division of empty cars in order that the anticipated rush of business may be handled with the utmost
expedition. With the facilities now
afforded in this section, the company
will have no difficulty in handling all
the freight that can be sent in over
the Crow's Nest road without the
slightest friction.
The announcement by the Great
Northern system of the change in the
schedule affecting Nelson as foreshadowed In The Miner a few days since
Is of very material importance to the
business and travelling public generally. Under the new time card the
morning train for Spokane is likely
to leave the Union depot within a few
minutes of nine o'clock, and, by making fuster time on the south run, will
urrive at Spokunc ,-ib early as the
train leaving now ut 7 o'clock. The
connection with tho westbound liyer
ou the inuin line of the Great Northern will be close und passengers for
the coast uro to be deposited at Seattle on the morning of the following
day, making the entire run under 24
hours. Returning the time is about
the same. The Spokane train may
arrh-e here as eurly us .1:30 o'clock in
the afternoon, the lojul ollloluls being
of the opinion that the time card can
be arranged to accomplish tills. By
this means the eastern mall will arrive in Nelson a couple of hours curlier thun nt the present time uud
quite ub early as could be secured If
the mull wus carried around by Kuskonook on the schedule now In fotee.
Under the now time card, however,
the time by the Nelson & liedlington
run Is likely to be slower than ut present and will certainly be a couple of
hours behind the ull-rull route direct
from Spokane to Nelson. Naturally
thu request to huve the mulls diverted
will be dropped unless the Greut
Northern Bhould run a train out of
Bonner's Ferry connecting with the
west bound transcontinental train
and the Kootenav ir.ail diverted there
instehd of going to Spokane for redis-
tiibution. Thia would bring the
mall in here several hours earlier
than could otherwise be secured but
no hint of a change as Indicated has
been given us yet.
The C. P. K. has not jet announced
its Pan-American exposition rates,
but as a matter of course thev will be
similar to the rates announced by
the American roads, vi/., single fare
return. An official statemei' in t"
head is expected daily. The rate announced is generally regarded as a
reasonable one and quite as much as
the railroads could have been expected
to grant at this time. If rate-slashing
is ever inaugurated in the race for
eastern business arising out of the big
Buffalo show it will be later on in
the season. The attendance at the exposition may not come up to the expectations of the management and in
this event they are sure to appeal to
the railroad people to come to their
assistance with lower rates. Reductions brought about in this way often
lead to a general cut in which the ordinary conventions of the passenger
business are disregarded.
One effect of the resumption of the
direct passenger service between NeJ-
son and Spokane is that all express
will be handled by rail and the clear-1
ing of goods billed to Nelson by the
customs officer at Rykerts will be dis-1J
continued. In fact a number of the
powers of attorneys by Nelson business men iu favor of the officer ut tbe
boundary line have already been
withdrawn and in a short time the
practice will be discontinued. It is
understood that a new system of clearing express goods through the customs
will be inaugurated in Nelson and that
in this respect the practice will be
similar to that followed in all commercial centers of any importance.
In this way the convenience of local
business men will be materially expedited and the customs officials will
have less trouble in handling the business.
CANADIANS
WIN THE V. The refusal of
seven members who sit to tlie right of
Mr. Speaker to swallow the govern*
ment programme in the matter of
railways cannot but be regarded as a
circumstance whicli implies disaster
unless shrewd diplomacy is displayed.
The premier is anything hut a dilpo
mat; and his colleagues can hardly be
given credit for possessing ability of
the soit which is demanded il the
rocks and shoals are to be avoided. All
signs indicate that tioublous times
are ahead of us in matters political.
All who have the true interests of the
country at heart will regret very
much that circumstances have arisen
which place the government ill jeopardy. A defeat for the government
ut this juncture would do incalculabl
barm to the country. The opposition
is weak, disintegrated and mistrusted
and a break-up at Victoria at this
time would result in nothing snort of
chaos. Further developments in the
situation will be awaited with tin
keenest anxiety.
T1I1C WAR IN Al-'RICA.
The. latest news regarding the operations iu South Africa is, on tlie
whole; satisfactory. The Boers aie
surrendering in small batches and
their agressiveness lias diminished to
11 very noticeable degree. Lord Kitchener's proclamation to the effect that
any resident of the martial law districts of Cape Colony found in arms
will be liable to the most severe penally should have a salutary effect.
Lord Kitchener is apparently putting
into operation the delayed plan of
campaign for which his new field force
is intended. The mounted army is
tlie lurgest ever placed in the Held by
any nation. The regular cavalry comprise some 14,000 men. and the colonials about 50,000. There are. 7,000 or
8,000 regular mounted infantrymen,
and the Imperial Yeomanry will
eventually reach a total of over '-'0.-
000. The artillery comprises over 1'.,-
000 men, and has more than 800 Impounder and IS-pounder guns. Some
twenty ammunition columns are ap
pointed to various columns and are
composed of men drawn from various
sources, including the uimy service
corp and the cavalry reseive in ling
land. In round figures, Kitchener has
a mounted force of about 80,000 men.
Willi this great mobile force, together
with Infantry sulllcienl to bilug the
grand total to nearly a quarter of a
million of men, tho British cominun
der-in-eliief has set out to complete
the subjugation of the Boer republics.
The movement northward of Klerks-
drop by Uuwlingsnn. und l'lumer's occupation of I'ietersburg und hi; movements id ill further to tlie north, is
likely to be followed by u movement
up the railroad leading from the Fre-
toriu- Lorenzo Marques line noi th
through the Lvdenburg district to
Leydtidorp.
