C.\nHEALTH IN\nCLOTHING\nA Hygienic and Scientific Fabric for Winter Wear.\nNow that the winter is approaching\nand the need tor warm clothing is beginning to bo telt, we naturally look\naround and consider as to what can\nbe obtained III the way of warm yet,\nat the same time, goud wearing articles ol apparel. Many and varied are\nthe goods held out to us by linns both\nnear and Iur, each having a special\nadvantage and economic distinction,\nand it is indeed very dillicult to decide what is best for us. The human\nskin is extremely sensitive, and iu the\nmajority of people unable to stand the\ncontact ol thick, bristly, woolley material. To remedy this Dr. Jaeger\nhas como to the rescue, and his world-\nrenowned pure wool fabric, which\nbears hie name, is now universally acknowledged to be in every way most\nsuitable and adapted Ior the human\nakin. Dr. Jaeger's reforms of cbthing\nare based on 'the scientific adaptation\not the covering of the body by day and\nby night, to the nature ot the skin\nand its exhaling or perspiring function, which is of such paramount importance to the body's well being.\nThe skin is pierced by millions of\npores through which is constantly exhaled a watery vapor, whereby the\nbody is relieved of much motter that\nwould be deleterious if suppressed or\nretarded. This vapor, known as perspiration, which may be condensed into\nsweat or may escape as uncoudensed\nvapor. The Bkin should always exhale\nsb any check is injurious and possibly\nfatal. Thus the body's covering should\nimpede' as little as possible the jkin's\nfunction of exhaling. So then the\ncovering must be permeable throughout to permit the exhalation to escape\nand the skin must be maintained at\nan equable warmth, as any chill diminishes its activity, driving away the\nblood from the surface vessels to the\ninternal organs and suspending tbe\nperspiring function. These conditions\nwerc found by Dr. Jaeger to be fulfilled\nonly by porous fabrics of animal wool,\nwhile plant fabrics (linen and cotton)\nare directly antagonistic to them.\nAnimal wool is devised by nature for\nanimal covering, aud does not attract\nor retain the noxious, malodorous matter which lhe body exhales. If wool\nretained these matters the whole race\noi sheep would long ago have been\npoisoned. Being a non-conductor of\nheat, animal wool does not chill even\nwhen damp. Again, without being\nheavy. Dr. Jaeger's material ensures\ncomplete warmth, and is a flexible\nand pliable covering for the body. So\nit will be seen that the Jaeger woollen\nclothing is iu every way adapted to\nwarmth, comfort and health. The\nwindow display ot Messrs. C. B. Hume\ni Co. is particularly exemplary of the\nvarious iorms of clothing manufactured by Dr. Jaeger, and we lind from\nthis firm, who are the sole agents for\nthis district, that the prices compare\nvery well with other materials which\nhave not the same beneficial results,\nTaking it all round the Jaeger wool\nclothing is the most desirable form of\nbody covering that can be found and,\nmanufactured in England and exported direct to the local agents in Revelstoke, the goods are new and fresh,\nevery form of wearing apparel of Jaeger wool being kept in stock,\nSTEAMER OREGON WRECKED\nWill Be Total Loss.\nSeattle, Sopt. 18th.\u00E2\u0080\u0094A despatch\nfrom Valiie/, Bays that the steamer\nOregon hit the rocks on the beach of\nHinchinbrook Island at the entrance\nto Prince William Sound at 12 o'clook\nThursday night. She was trying to\nfind the entrance in the darkness\nwhen the headland loomed, up and although she reversed engines she struck\nhard enough to tear her bottom out.\nThe Oregon struck at low tide and\nthe rising water soon filled her engine-\nroom to the second grating.\nA orew of five men lelt immediately\nfor Valdez to get assistance.\nThe revenue cutters Bush and McCullough left Valdez to take off the\npassengers. There was no sea running\nat the time of the wreck, but the position ol the steamer is such that she is\nexposed to the (ull forco ol the swell,\ntnd if the wind rises she is in a pre-\nMriout position.\nThe wreck occurred seventy mllei\nirom Valdei and thirty-five miles from\nHutshek. The pamugtn are all (tie\nSpec'al despatches received here of\nthe wreck of the steamer Oregon al\ntlie entrance to Prince William Sound\non Thursday say that she lies in a\nvery dangerous position.\nShe is commanded by Captain U.K.\nSoule and sailed from Seattle September 8, with about fifty passengers aud\n900 tons of freight. When the news\nof the wreck was brought to Valdei\nby Chief Mate Kennedy and by sailors, after a long row ot fifty or sixty\nmiles, thc revenue cutters Rush and\nMcCullough were Immediately dispatched to the scene of the disaster to\nrescue the passengers. The steamers\nwould have arrived alongside the Oregon at 2 o'clock this morning. II the\ncutters reach tho Oregon belore she\nbreaks up thoy will doubtless have no\ndifficulty in taking oil those on board.\nShould the veB-iel go to pieces however before relief arrives the passengers will have some difficulty in making\nthe shore under the most favorable\nconditions.\nWESTERN GEN.-SUPT.\nBut few people in Revelstoke have\nany personal acquaintance with Mr.\nWilliam Whyte, who has just been\nappointed general superintendent of\nthe western division ol the C.P.R., but\nall those who do know him speak in\nthe highest terms ol his ability and\ngeneral character. Mr. Whyte, like\nmosl railroaders, was not born to thc\npurple, but has reached his present\nposition after many years of toilsome\nclimbing. He started on the Grand\nTrunk about twenty years ago aa a\nfreight clerk in Toronto, and for some\nyears was encouraged in miscellaneous\nwork. Subsequently he was station\nagent at Stratford and then he became\nfreight agent for the Grand Trunk at\nToronto. A few years later buw him\nen the Credit Valley road aB general-\nsuperintendent, and when that road\nwas absorbed by the C.P.R. he still\nretained the position for awhile. He\nwas then removed to Torouto and\ngiven charge of the leased lines in\nWestern Ontario aud performed the\nduties so well that when Mr. Archer\nBaker resigned the general superin-\ntendency to represent the road in\nEngland, he went back to Montreal\nand took his place. His duties there\nwere numerous and responsible. He\nhad to look alter the C.P.R. main line\nfrom Quebec to Port Arthur; the\nOntario and Quebec, from Perth to\nToronto; the Toronto, Grey and\nBruce, the Brockville & Ottawa, and\nthe numerous other lines controlled\nby tbe C.P.R. He did the work to the\nsatisfaction of everyone, but it impaired his health, and he has been in\nEurope for some time recuperating.\nHe is only comparatively a young\nman, but he knows more about railroading than most men twice his\nage.\nCONSUMPTIVE SANITARIUM.\nDr. C. J. Pagan, provincial medical\nhealth officer, has returned to Vancouver from his trip of inspection in\nsearch oi a site for a provincial sanitarium for consumptives. He stated\nthat the sanitarium would probably\nbe erected on Kamloops Lake, and\nthat he was in favor of building a\nsmaller sanitarium at a point higher\nup, probably on tbe Shuswap Lake\nwhere it would not be so hot and\nwhere patients could be removed from\nKamloops. In order to take advantage of the Hon. James Dunsmuir's\noffer it was necessary for the citizens\nof the province to rai-e iHO.OOU in a\nmonth, A committee of business men\nin New Westminster is already working to raise Westminster's share of the\ncontribution, and Dr. Fagan hopes\nbefore he leaves Vancouver to have a\ncommittee of local business men busily\nengaged in raising money in Vancouver\nNOTICE\nN\u00C2\u00B0\nWOULD YOU LIKE TO\nBE INDEPENDENT ll\nA permanent income will be\nhad from small investments in\nBritish Columbia Amalgamated\nCoal Company.\nWRITE FOR PARTICULARS.\n\u00C2\u00A3 A. Without exaggerating in the smallest degree,\nRevelstoke is being threatened with\na very grave and imminent disaster\nthis can be only seen to be thoroughly realized. Where once lay\nbroad acres and nourishing fields,\nprosperous industries and smiling\nhomes, now is a rushing turbulent,\nresistless flood, relentless- in its\npowerful grip, and increasing iu\nviolence and magnitude month by\nmonth, surely and rapidly eating\ninlo the vitals of our fine city, and\ncarrying nil before it. Are we to\nstand by quietly and see this work\nof destruction going on without\nmaking any effort to allay the\ncause '.' During the year past our\nI twenty-five acres have been engulfed, swallowed up, our very eyes\nbeing capable of detecting yard by\nyard the destruction of our properly. With all due respect to the\nGovernment tbey have been and\nare doing a little towards coping\nwith ihe danger; but ibe work has\nbeeu totally inadequate, and to put\nil in plain unvarnished words, a\nwaste of money and labor, 'llie\nGovernment hardly realizes the\nimportance or lhe significance of\nis endeavoring to move, and continually filling up again with what\nhas been taken out. Without any\nsuspicion of a doubt the outlook is\nserious, and already property owners are refusing to pay their taxes\non lands which will go or practically have gone now. Year by\nyear the lands destroyed are more\nvaluable as the river eats its way\ninto the heart of the townsite. A\nprominent Conservative states that\nover one hundred Socialist votes\nhad been made in Revelstoke by\nthe negligence of the Government\nin not taking steps to cope with the\nriver bank destruction, but without\ncommenting on this, we certainly\nthink that the Dominion Government should install more dredges\nwith more capacity which will be\nable to do the work and do it\neffectually, and by having these\nmore powerful appliances in working order now, they could if sufficient money was appropriated, finish\nthe dam and open up a good, deep\nwide channel this winter. It is\npleasing to note that the government engineer is coming up to\npersonally size up the situation and\nperhaps the machinery of the Government will be set in motion.\ni'.i-i-,i ptiyii:: mil , . llio* Inl\n- imm,,-.
