The ao-
_oi_tceuie_t has been made officially,
and all doubts as to an election
taking place this fall are now set
at rest. Rather better than six
weeks have been given to the candidates, and this is surely a long enough period lor the tight to last.
In our own inlinedlate coast district
everything is ready and everyone is
prepared i'or tbo battle. The candidates are all iu the Held; and the
preliminaries ore now at an end.
Jn Vancouver, Victoria, and our own
district, the Conservuthe party is
represented by ablo and powerful
standard-bearers, and ixx the Capital
City particularly the liveliest hopes
are entertained of a great Conservative victory
In the ap-l~_ of the words. There
[are many rhymes in Pope which,
whilo perfect to the eye, Jar on the
[ear according to modern pronunciation, and it may be taken for granted that the fashion of speaking has
undergone some alteration. "Sea"
I {apparently was pronounced liko
'say," and "tea" took the Irish
pronunciation of "toy," Other ex-
l—inples might be given all of which
tend to prove that what is right today la wrong tomorrow.
The Colonist sums the matter up
by the rather bold assertion that
tbe standard of correct pronunciation can most safely be token from
the cultured classes. In a general
way this statement may be true;
but wo have noticed that evon the
Cultured betray in tholr speech certain localisms. For instance, the
men of Oxford have certain mannerisms and Inflections in their speech
which distinguish them from the
I men of Cambridge, und their pronunciation of a number of words is
sheer sacrifice ot some weighty vowel. .We are not referring to the
| finicky lecturers who persist in giving three syllables to '''conscience,"
'ocean," and kindred words, but to
such simple units of speech as
'boat," "road," "here," -"there,"
[and su forth. An uneducated North
countryman says '"heor," when he
means to say either "here" or
'hear," and our local remittance men
say "ho-'ar" for both words. Solar
as correctitude is concerned tlie pitman is no worst, than his 'college
contemporary. Take also smart society's murderous treatment of
"roally, and kindred exclamatory
words, and the conclusion is inevitable that tbe English tongue is as
much abused by the cultured as it
is by tho uneducated. We suppose
that as fn orthography, the, stu»i<
ard of orthoepy will vary and change
with fashion and custom; but even
then the destruction of a leadingi
vowel, or the arbitrary alteration of
.quantity or sound can never be right
The well of English pure and unde-
filod, has no flourishes, and the
strength and beauty of our mother
tongue Is only weakened by over re-
flnement. Even on the public
streets foreign women have been relieved of tholr purses in broad lay-
light after tho manner of towns in
the so-called "Wild Wost."
Tho authorities seem- either holp-
loss or indifferent to the urgency of
the circumstances.
