The two representatives for this enormous
distriet live on the Cariboo
road. Dr. Callahan, of Barkerville, has never to our knowledge left it, to journey into the
vastly important by-ways of
his constituency. John. A.
Fraser, of Quesnel, is more energetic. He occasionally passes
tlirough the northern valleys,
ami tells what the Victoria
government is doing, and iniends lo do. Put his activities
I in the house can not be said to
have embraced any measures
which have advanced at all
j materially the interests of tl*.
people of South Fort George,
lhe new centre of the Cariboo
Dislrict. We do not attach
blame to Mr, Eraser in this, as
in matters of such moment as
the location of the government
biddings here the issue was
! taken out. of his hands and left
(for the decision of the govern-
| ment in Victoria, by the citizens
here themselves. The denoeu-
ment of such governmental errors as that made in the matter
referred to, however, drives us
to request a re-distribution of
.seats, or iho creation of a new
I
electoral district in such manner
that the wpper Fraser river and
! Peace river districts obtain representation in Victoria.
The lower Cariboo country is
easily administered. Ids constituents clamour for little else
than water rights, or a road,
a trail or a bridge here or there,
i There arc two small towns in
its domains, -Quesnel an old distributing centre for upper Cariboo, and a prosperous agricultural centre; and Barkerville, of
gold mines and ancient history.
;0ne man of average mental cal-
jibre can represent that portion
| of the Cariboo Electoral Dist-
j rict, and by the exercising of energetic interest in the welfare of
his constituency, could represent it well
The need of a forceful representation for upper, or new, Cariboo, however, is obvious up
hero. A man is wanted who
knows the requirements of the
district and who will insist on
proper recognition by fearless
advocacy, and who will not be
afraid to stand up and tell tho
government that their attitude
towards his constituency does
not suit, the people he represents—should the occasion arise.
When a provincial election
looms up on ihe political horizon in British Columbia, same
gentleman of the cause almost
invariably precedes tike big event, even within tho remote confines of Cariboo, and addresses
a public meeting. He tells us
how the McBride government
has upbuilt the province's finances, since coining to power, so
many years ago. He will dwell
upon the surplus—the accumulated cash — and tell us how
much money is being spent on
public works. If some unfeeling
mamber of the audience will ask
him for an approximate idea of
the comparison between revenue
and expenditure for our own
particular district he will not
receive such infirmation, for
such a statement would show
that appropriations for developing the district are as a
grain of dust in comparison to
, the revenue derived from the
i sale of timber and lands in the
1 district.
It is time we hardened
our hearts.
