B. c
ROSSLAND MINES.
The proposals as to amalgama
tion with the War Eagl- and Centre
Star oompanieB made to the Le Roi
do not seem to be favorably viewed
in London. In faot there is no
partionlar reason why the Le Roi
Bhould take upon it the burden of
debt whioh is pressing down the
Gooderham properties, and from
whioh they hope to eztrioate themselves successfully by means of
their reduotion works at Trail.
The Ltndon shareholders of the Le
Roi have already had a taste of
amalgamation when the Le Roi
No. 2, the Rossland Great WeB'.ern
and tbe Kootenay Mines were all
one with the parent mine, the Le
Roi. That arrangement did not
seem satisfactory. Yet the Le
Roi No. 2 has oertainly copper ore
of a grade whioh is being found
very useful by the Granby smelter,
and which was held to be of the
utmost importance to the Le Roi
mine, although, in fairness it must
be admitted tbat (after the disruption) the Northport smelter deolared that they could get on very
Well without it. Perhaps they
have. Perhaps they have not.
Manager Wilson is resigning
Whether this is beoause he cannot
agree with the present outfit running the Le Roi or whether it is
that he is held to bs incompetent,
has not transpired Similarly it has
reosntly been admitted in a semi
offioial utterance by our contemporary, if such utterances are ever
worth very muoh, that the Kootenay has the only ore in the oamp
whioh oan be used successfully as
an Iron flux at Northport for the
silioious ores of the Le Roi. Nobody has said a word in favor of
the Niokel Plate for an all sufficient reason. That iB that the day
of the Niokel Plate has yet to oome.
It is a silioious mine and needs
flux, and oan neither supply an
iron nor a oopper ore wbioh will
amount to much. But tbis is exactly the position of tbe War Eagle
and Centre Star. Neither of these
mines have iron or oopper in excess. If they had ir jn, a washing
oat process suoh as that derived at
Trail oould not be thought of. If
they had oopper the ore would be
of good smelting value.
It was thought at the time of the
severing of the oonneotion between
the Le Roi and its subsidiary properties, tbat those properties would
go on (hipping to Northport. But
tbey have not. The Le Roi No. 2
is shipping to Greenwood, and it it
understood is getting far better
terms than oan be served out to
them at Northport. Tbe Jumbo,
whioh is an iron proposition, is
doing the same thing, with like
Malts, whioh are said in its case
lo amount to a dollar a ton. The
Kootenay is shipping perfunctorily
to Northport, as it has shipped before, but time alone will tell whetli
er the arrangement will be made
permanent. Seemingly not when
there is talk of the smelter closing
in a few weeks' time.
Therefore if amalgamation did
not pay in these oases, how oan it
be expected to pay with the War
Eagle and Centre Star? Had the
o 'OB of those two mines constituents
which would flux with the Le Roi,
it wonld be a different thing. But
they are silicious ores like tbat of
the low grade Le Roi. Hence such
a proposal is not seriously consid
ered in London. Of oourse the
Snowshoe might join, suoh an
amalgamation, and it supply the
flux. But the Snowshoe also doeB
not seem to be favorably oonsidered in London, judging from recent
developments.
On suoh grounds as these Ihe
Lomlo'n financial papers are favor-
rig reconstruction, pntling np sufficient capital to build a mill. Tbe
dumps alone would pay the oost
twice over. At the same time tbe
oapital stock should bs reduced,
say on a basis of the present stock
value of tbe shares, and then there
is doubt, if under capable and professional management, the mine
would pay l_rge dividends. The
mine has proved itB ability to do
this in the old days, there is ab
solutely no reason why it should
noa do so again.
AT THE CHURCHES TOMORROW
St. George's Church—Rev. J.
