Boi 30' RoBsland, B.\nAN ALL CANADIAN ROUTE.\nSinoe the award in tbe Alaekau\nboundary case there haB bean a\nBtrong feeling in Canada, which the\npremier haB voiced, that there\nshould exist an all-Canadian route\nto Atlin and Dawson. Viotoria is\nboosting this along and its Board\nof Trade is sending a aeries of circulars all over the Province, and\nespecially asking the coast cities to\nfavour the project. The course taken by auch a route ia not dearly\nindicated in the ciroular but would\nseem to begin with an island rail\nroad frem end to end of Vancouver\nIsland, with a shipping port at the\nnorthern extremity, \"at some suitable point.\" After that the course\nof the route is vaguely indicated\nIt probably has some port at the\nPortland Canal and thence a\nbranoh line is to be built, or maybe\nit is a portion of the main line, to\ntap the headwaters of the Stikine,\nDease and Liard rivers, which are\ndeclared to be in a oountry that ie\nhighly metalliferous, and whioh is\nsituated in the northern portion of\nCassiar, in latitude 58-59 north.\nThere is a little referenoe made to\nsome survey] as to the best course\nfor the routs but it would seem to\nbe not as yet made.\nAs far as the coast is concerned\nthere is reason why it should\nbe connected with the north by a\nCanadian route. Seattle gets most\nof the trade, it ie asserted, although on the other hand offioial\nreports declare that the bulk of the\ntrade is ^already in Canadian\nhands and is destined apparently\nto pass almost wholly into them.\nYet Seattle has no better Bervice\nthan Vancouver or Victoria with\nthe north. Returning miners\nwould rather stay in Seattle thar\nia Vancouver because of a grandmotherly spirit pervading the city\ncounoil of that moral burg which\nsays that the miners who have\nbeen shut up for months and years\nin the frozen wilds shall not drink\na glass of beer and listen to a song\nat the same time. Seattle merchants, the Victorians and Van-\ncouveri.es declare, are not selling\noutfitB obeaper than themselves.and\nil this is the case the fault must lie\nelsewhere. Since the establishment\nof the assay office by the government the gold can be as readily\nand expeditiously disposed of at\n.the same rates, or even cheaper,\nthan oan be done in the Sound cities, Where the all Canadian route\nis to benefit the British Columbia\nooast oities iB hard to see. Sea\nborne freight is cheaper than railway borne. Freight that cornea by\nboat up the Yukon, iB then transferred to a railway and sent down\nas far as a port on the Portland\ncanal, reshipped, landed at a \"suitable port\" at the norlh end of the\nIsland, oarried over the rails several hundreds \u00C2\u00BBt miles to Viotoria, is\nliable to be somewhat heavily\noharged and dela; ed. If the deati\nnation ie Vancouver the oase is\nworse still, and Vancouver people\nwould rather cut out tho Island\nrailwaj and ship direct to Port\nSimpson and, if it corner) to thnt\nto Skagway, Victoria ha,d better\nhit upon a scheme which will have\nthe hearty endorsement of the\nmbre flourishing oity, Vancouver,\nif it really wants hearty co-operation.\nThe natural direction for the all\nCanadian route would rather seem\nto be a connection between the C\nP. R. and the Grand Trunk Paoific\nvia Lytton and Chilcotin or Revelstoke and Barkerville, and a line\nrunning north from the Grand\nTrunk through 'lie Dense river\ncountry to Atlin mid, therme to\nDawson. This would open up the\ncountry favoured by the Viotoiian\nbut '.would also help out The Cari\nboo country where much money is\nbeing spent yearly and where the\nlack of transportation is doing eo\nmuch harm to the deep placer dig\nginge. Vancouver wants a line to\nopen up Bella Coola and the Skeena\ntogether witn the Bulkley country,\njust as much as Victorian wants a\nreal railway line to open up the\nisland from end to end.\nWanted.\nSpeoial representative in this and\nadjoining territories, to represent\nand advertise an old established\nbusiness house of solid financial\nstanding.
