MORROW, The [DfUgglSt rj
' CALL FOR A TRIAL BOX. -J-J
Disregard of a Municipal By-Law
Leads to Lamentable Consequences'
A sad aooident occurred yesterday afternoon, which bas resulted
in Mrs. Clare lying at the point of
death in the Sisters' Hospital with
a bullet wound two inches above
thV hip whioh has penetrated the
bene. The firer of the unfortunate
shot, Mrs. M. Villeneuve, is almost
out of her mind with the distress
over the trouble Bhe so unwittingly
caused.
The faots of the case, according
to the polioe who have been making an enquiry into the oiroum-
stanoeB, are as follow?:
It seems that Cleve Villeneuve, a
youngster of some 15 or 16 years
old, took a Winchester on trial on
Saturday afternoon from Charles
Cluett. Qoing down the track
some way ha tried the gun and
was very well satisfied and intended
to complete its purchase.
Yesterday afternoon at about
five o'olock a party of five people
began practicing at a mark aoross
the length of the lot at
the home of Mrs. Hard-
Harding with the gun in question.
The party was comprised of Mrs.
Harding and daughter, Mrs. Villeneuve, Qui Langlois of Trail and
J. Qonalson of this oity. The
shell used waa tbe long and not
the short shell. This has a greater
rauge and has greater penetrating
power. Of this faot the little
party was evidently unaware for
they ohose as a it ark a big gate
post about 50 or CO feet distant.
Direotly in lino with the mark and
about as far distant again is the
woodshed belonging to the home of
Mrs. Clare. Direotly behind the
woodshed is Mra. Clare's residence,
Shots, missing the target, therefore, were bound to hit the wood
*
shed. Nobody thought that it
would penetrate that building and
then penetrate the wall or door of
tbe house behind. **
Yet Chief Bradshaw reports he
found three bullet holes clear
through the woodshed, one of which
had gone on and penetrated the
wall ol the house beyond. In the
door of the house were found 2 more
bullet holes. The last perforated
of these waB made by the bullet
whioh struok Mrs. Clare.
Mrs. Clare was lying down at
the time the firing started and got
up and was we'king across the
floor when she was struck. She
immediately ciied eut and her
neighbors ran in. It was seen immediately what had happened and
Mrs. Villeneuve wae horror struok,
and her subsequent condition of
mind has been pitiable.
The ambulance was immediately
oalled into requisition, and the unfortunate sufferer taken to the hoe
pital. Two doctors, Messrs. Camp-
DRIVEN ACROSS THE YALU
Russians Occupy The Hills Beyond.
ATTACKED ON FLANKS AND CENTRE
Shanghai, May 2—The news of
the successful passage of the Yalu
by the Japanese in face of the Russian army is confirmed. It waB at
first reportei that the Russians
had sucoeeded in repulsing the general advanoe, and that a detached
party of Cossacks had unexpectedly attacked the Japs on the far
bank of the Yalu, thereby putting
their arrangements into confusion.
This part of the firat news would
aeem not to have been the case, al*
though there was undoubtedly a
party of Cossacks whioh passed
over the Yalu to the extreme right
of the Japanese line wbioh extended some 30 miles in length, but
which, being out off from all communication from the main body,
.found their safety greatly in jeopardy as they penetrated further in
to Korea assailing the oommuni-
cations of their enemies. The
party, however, managed to retreat
having lost a number of their men
through the hurried marches to re-
oover touoh with'the main body
whioh was found absolutely necessary.
Abortive Attempt to Threaten the Rear of the Japanese Army in Ko* ,;~,. '.-â–
rea.
The Japanese threatening to
attaok on their extreme left at the
mouth of the Yalu where the Russians expeoted them, made their
real attack on the oentre. Thia
was fiercely opposed by the
Russians, although caught unprepared. Another feint was made on
the extreme right and the right
oentre then crossed the river under
oover of the real attaok and caught
the defending Russians in flank.
The same manoeuvre was successful on the left centre and the
Russians finding their line pieroed
in two places, along a length of
80 miles concentrated on their
second line whioh has been quietly
prepared on the summit of the
hills to the east of the Yalu valley.
St. Petersburg, May 2—An official announcement is gazetted today explaining that the Emperor
is refusing all applications of foreigners for permission to serve
as volunteers in the far east
beoause he considers that the life
and strength of the individual belong above all to his native oountry.
bell and Coulthard were soon in
attendance, and declared the injury to be as above Btated, the
bullet, as yet unreoovered, being,
somewhere within the lower portion
of the abdomen. Mrs. Clare is reported as being in a dangerous
condition, and her ultimate recovery from bo dangerous a wound is
considered extiemely doubtful. A
surgical operation is contemplated
this afternoon.
The matter being evidently
merely an aooident, however re*
jy-ettable, no aotion is likely to be
taken except under the bylaw which
forbids the discharge of firearms
with the munioipal limits.
T
vadths LawTroubla
We oan suit you in a hat in style,
quality and prioe.
