The\nBtory is told and retold with many\nvariations, but even if there is no\ntruth in the rumor there ia at leant\ngood reason why it might be true.\nThe Pioneer states that in 1901\nthe Granby company paid the C.\nP. For the current year\nthe company will probably pay\nthe railway nearly $600,000 in\nfreight charges, and this notwith\nstanding the fact that matte shipments to the east have been discontinued and only blister copper\n90 per cent fine is now Bhipped to\nthe refineries.\nWith these figures in view the\nimportance to a railway company\nof securing such a Bteadily increasing business can readily be understood.\nTHE TERMS.\nThere is unquestionably a strong\ndesire on the part of the British\ngovernment to have peace declared\nin South Africa prior to tbe coronation festivities. For the cause\nstated the government has apparently receded from its original position of unconditional surrender.\nWhen thc matter waB uueulioued\nin the houBe Mr Balfour was silent\nrespecting the terms offered by\nLord Kitchener and Lord Milner.\nThese must have been definite or\nthe Boer leaders would not have\ndispersed to consult their commandos.\nThere is a general feeling that\nthe Boer chiefs felt assured that\ntheir followers would favor a settlement, and that the continued pressure of military operations will not\ntend to excite irritation and resistance.\nApparently the optimistic views\nof Sir Charles Dilke, published\nlaBt evening, are shared by many\nmembers of the house, who already\nlook upon the war as virtually settled.\nThere is a good deal of anxiety\nas to the terms offered, but it is improbable that the British government haB materially changed the\noriginal offer.\nhad been such would they have\nhad the courage to prefer honeBt\nlaborious misery to blameworthy\nease.\nFinally Zola asked his listeners,\nthat, considering the useleBS, idle\nlives they led, what right had they\nto meddle with philosophy, literature and politics.\nIt is to the credit of the ladies in\nquestion that, while some of them\ndemanded the invitation be with\ndrawn for the two remaining lectures, the majority refused to do bo.\nAs can easily be supposed the\nlecture? nre the sensation of the\nhour iu Paris.\nNOTES AND COMMENTS.\nTime is ripe for Hon.
