APRIL it, 1904\n-m-\nTHE METRIC SYSTEM\nObjections Urged at Recent\nMeeting of Manufacturers.\nThe Metrio eystetn coming fer\nconside, ation before the reoent\nmeeting of the Canadian Manufacturers Association the following\nobjections were urged and its debate deterred for another year:\nThe objections raised against the\nadoption ot the Metrio System\ngroup themselves natrally into two\nclasses, theoretical and praotical.\nUnder first-heading it is urged that\nit ia more natural for mankind to\ndivide quantities and measures by\ntwo and multiples of two than by\nten. For this reason it would appear that the English pound containing 16 ounces and capable of\ndivision by two, three separate\ntimes, is preferable to the kilogramme containing 1000 gra-nines;\nand the English foot, containing 12\ninohes, whioh may be divided by\n2,3, 4 or 6 evenly, iB a batter measure than the decimetre containing\n10 oentimetres. In faot it ia common in Franoe at the present time\nto sell goods by the demi-kilo,\nshowing that the desire to divide\nquantities by two oannot be eradicate even after more than a century\nof a compulsory use of the decimal\nsystem. In this oonneotion John\nQuinoy Adams said in his celebrated report on the Metrioal System\nthat \"deoimal divisions are applicable only to numbers and thst\ntime, space, gravity and extension\nrejeot its sway.\"\nIt is also pointed out that while\nthe adaptation of our system of\nweights to the Metrioal System\nmight be possible, that that System is badly adopted to linear\nmeasurements.\nContinental nations have not yet\nsuooeeded in driving out the old\nforms of weights and measures. A\nreoent work published in Germany\non the ooet ol textile fabrics contains an appalling mixture of\nweights and measures suoh as\nFrenoh lines, English yards,\nFrenoh inohes, Metrio metre*, English pounds and Metrio grammes.\nIt is also olaimed that the Metrio\nSystem does not reduce the labor\ninvolved in everyday calculations,\nIn ordinary business problems the\nvulgar fractions snoh as 1*4, 1-3,\n1-2,18, etc., are easier handled\nthan their equivalent deoimals,\nand while the Metrio System is\nwell adapted for soientifio purposes\nthe reason is \"that the scientific\nuse ol measurements consists of\nmeasuring existing things whi'e\nthe industrial use ol measurements\noonsists in making things to\nquired size.\"\na re-\nTho other Sid*.\nA number of newspapers in British Columbia have been publishing\nfalse stories about Ymir, Bays the\nNelson Tribune.
