Those who have
recently come from Japan confirm
tbe reports of trained observers
there that the Japanese are generally preparing for early war with
Russia.
Intimations several times have
been given since tbe close of tbe
war between China and Japan in
1895 that Japan would regard interference with the autonomy of
Korea as a hostile act. The Japanese, including their representative ministers, have firmly made
up their minds that when the ro-
sults of Russian intrigues are disclosed in an open movement hostile to Japan, the Japanese army
shall be landed in Korea and Russia warned that she must retrace
her steps or fight.
Smallpox In New .York.
Albany, June 7.—The smallpox
conditions in Sufferu are said to be
serious. The iBsue seems a plain
one and until the manager makes
some new move there is nothing
further to be said.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
It is quite delightful at times to
to read in English papers some of
the comment on Rossland affairs.
The facts stated are usually great,
if not good, news here and generally the items are interesting, if not
truthful.
The reporter of an English weekly paper recently interviewed Mr.
C. R. Hosmer, a War Eagle-Centre
Star director, previous to that gentleman's, departure for Canada, and
this is the result:
"This gentleman, who is a director of the C. P. R., takes a ' very
prominent place in Canadian mining circles, and attributes the present collapse in Centre Star and
War Eagle shares to inadequate
working capital. When asked
whether the present price represented the intrinsic value of the
shares, he expressed himself as unable to give an opinion, but he
pointed out that the Le Roi would
be in the same Btate _today were it
not that there had been ample
working capital at the disposal of
the company with which to prosecute development in the unusually
hard formation which is a peculiarity of the Red mountain mines.
"His attention was drawn to certain statements which had appeared in the Canadian papers to
the effect that the decline in
these shares was due to manipulation, but he assured our representative that there was no truth in
this these rumors, fur he knew that
Mr. Gooderham not only had his
original holdings intact, but had
advanced large sums to the companies."
The paper comments as follows:
"It may be remarked that the
money for the development of the
Le Roi has been largely advanced
by the Bank of Montreal who
would, no doubt, have done the
same for the War Eagle had they
considered that the mine deserved
their confidence."
It will be noticed that two reasons are assigned for the War
Eagje-Centre Star fiasco, "inadequate capital" and "want of confidence in the mine." Not a whisper
of bad management here and at
headquarters. If the Canadian
press will look alter the management, the mines can be counted upon to look after themselves and
when proporly managed will respond accordingly, as all mining
men in the Kootenays believe.
DISCRIMINATION.
The plain, unvarnished statement of their case as put by Mr.
15. R. Shed, the president of the
Northport mill and smeltermen's
union, which appeared in full in
these columns yesterday, shows
very plainly thut tbe Northport
union men have a distinct grievance against the Le Roi smelter
management, but one which can
readily be adjusted by arbitration
if tbe company desires to.act justly
in the matter.
On the other hand, if tbe manager desires to break up the union
at Northport preparatory to attacking thc Rossland union, and is- determined to carry out that policy,
there is no saying where the matter will end. Fortunately for the
men, and unfortunately for the
management, Mr. Kadish, the
smelter superintendent, is neither
a wise nor tactful man. His indiscreet utterances repeatedly made
to the union men this and last
week disclose the plain motive of
the attack very clearly, at least bo
The Toronto city council recently submitted a money bylaw to the
ratepayers. It was voted down
not because the voters were in
ignorance about what the money
was wanted for. as the board of
control put in a. full column of
facts in all the city papers for some
days before the voting took place,
stating clearly the scheme in view
and giving the opinion of the city
engineer and other officials. If
that had been done here it is quite
possible that the money for the
sewer bylaw wonld have been
voted.
EMPEY'SJ
Rossland's 1
Greatest gost |
Sale! . |
I
See Prices I 1
EMPEY'S 1
^wnit^mssMymsrsAtsA^^
International Music Hall f
Week Commencing Monday, May 37. »
Kirchners
Famous
Orchestra
Vocalists and
Entertainers
PURITA KIRCHNER,
Petite Stubrette anil Daneime
ELLA KIRCHNER, .
Musical Specialties
Erb and George Kirchner
Tha) German Swells.
EDYTHE STANLEY!
