The Minister\nof Justice gives the opinion the act\nia within the power of the legisla\nture, and therefore, advised that it\nbe not disallowed. The looal gov\nernment having undertaken to assert the olaims of settlers by paying the oost of litigation will now\nbe in a position to carry out the\npromise. The Dominion government's view is that legislation of\nthat kind, whether good or bad, b\ndomestic in oharaoter and, therefore, should not be interfered with.\nWhatever the settlers' rights may\nbe they will be determined by the\ncourts and not by the disallowance,\nwhioh the members of the looal\ngovernment are known to have\nfavored.\nThe Treadgold concession in the\nYukon has been cancelled. Treadgold and the promoters notified\nthe government that they desired\nto withdraw from the undertaking,\nand the leue was, therefore, cancelled.\nAn order in oounoil has passed\ngiving the Yukon oounoil power\nta deal with the liquor business in\nYukon territory. The Yukon oounoil has been doing this under looal\nordinanoe, when objection was\ntaken to it on the ground of want\nof jurisdiction. The Justice department held that the objections\ntaken were valid and now the Dominion government has passed\nthiB order to dispose of the question of divided authority.
