FAMI.VG.
The short details given in the telegraphic news of the famine iu India are terrible in their import. From Calcutta
and Bombay the accouute are truly appalling. Iu tbe latter city according to
lbe correspondent of the London Timet,
900 bodies are to be picked up each
morning. The last retartis put down tbe
number of deaths during the week at
over 7000. Tbis, however, gives but a
small idea of the calamity, as a very
much larger number die in the jungle
unknown and ancared for. The total
number per week in and around Bombay,
is therefore put down by the Timet correspondent al 21,000. As Bombay with its
immediate surroundings has a population
of about 700,000, we have 3 per cent, of
the inhabitants cut down by starvation
every week—a rate of mortality that
would clear oat the city and its viciriiy
of every soul in about eight mouths. The
number of deaths is not so great in Calcutta, although this city is a little larger
than Bombay, but the mortality Is sufficiently horrible to make us wonder at the
administration of affairs that proves itself
so incompetent to prevent or alleviate
catastrophes, which seem to be periodical. In a tropical country, where
nature is so lavish in her productions, and
where the wants of man ure so easily
satisfied, it does seem strange that tha
wisdom of those who bave the unobstructed management of affairs should be
unable to avert these direful visitations
either by timely precautions, or by a system of irrigation that would counteract
to a great extent the effects of the
droughts to which certain portions of
India are so subject. The area of the
Presidency of Calcutta is nearly doable
that of Great Britain and Ireland, being
over 221,000 square miles, yet its population is -only one-Wrd greater. Tbe
Presidency of Bombay where the greatest destitution prevails, covers over 131,-
000 square miles,.nine thousand greater
than Great Britain and Ireland, and only
contains a population Orleans.
"Your I'ilu are the prince of purges.
