Locations like the Expo banks, Granville bank, China Creek'bowls, North Van\nbowl, the planter in front of the 7-11 on\nBroadway & Arbutus, or your neighbour's\ndriveway are begging to be skated.\nIf you can't find any decent terrain, you\ncan always create your own. I'm not talking about the killer Noah's Ark half-pipe construction project in your Grandma's strawberry patch (but if you could...). Stick a\nsheet of plywood on a box or use two trash\ncans as supports and blast airs off the side,\nor try to grind the top without falling over\nend. If it's a bit rickety, that's cool because\nit will improve your reflexes and you'll be\nready to bail when it collapses in a pile of\ndust. Then build a half-pipe. A half-pipe is\na U-shaped structure achieving a vertical\nincline in which the skater rides back and\nforth between the two walls, propelling\nhimself against gravity by thrusting his legs.\nAlthough a high-speed downhill run takes\nballs, a half-pipe with a couple of feet of vert\nis what separates the men from the boys\n(or, presumably, the girls from the women).\nPicture yourself riding the flat wall of the\noutside of your house. Picture yourself\nbomb dropping off your rooftop and riding\nyour skateboard straight down the wall. But\nthat's not all. On a half-pipe you can ride\nthe transition and then go up the other side.\nDon't forget to throw in a monorail, a\nsweeper, a backside boneless, a lofty six- foot air (that's six feet above the top of a\nten-foot ramp, sports fans) and finally an invert for good measure. The tricks pulled off\nby today's riders are insane; learning these\ntricks so that you can achieve your dream\nof skate star status isn't easy either. You\ncan't jam out, but you don't want to hang\nup and plunge to the ramp bottom in a four-\npoint body slam or a face plant. No one\nwants to be carted away like a blob of jello.\nDear Mr. Police Officer,\nPlease don't give me a ticket for skateboarding. You see, I'm just trying to get from\npoint A to point B. It's just that I don't always\ntake the most direct route. If there's a curb\nthat needs grinding, a mailbox that needs\nme to foot-plant off it, or a drain that needs\nto be hopped over, then I'm going to do it.\nI can skate faster and in better control than\nmost people can walk. If you lock me up I'll\nshred the prison hallways. It's in my blood,\nbud. Later,\nJoe Skater\nTHE MAJORITY OF SKATE RATS\nare tuned into the street experience.\nThe problem lies in applying a non-\ntraditional use to something that generally\nonly functions in a traditional role. Innovation is met with ignorance and ignorance\nusually breeds fear. Those same people\nthat freaked out from atop their horse-drawn\nbuggies when they witnessed the introduction of the automobile have been reincarnated as today's pedestrian. They simply\ncannot relate to the mobility of a skateboarder weaving through them like slalom\ncones. They want to plod along, read the\nnewspaper, count birds in the sky, window\nshop, or preoccupy themselves with what\nto cook for dinner when the boss comes\nover. The solution is to ignore them and\nkeep skating.\nThe street skating philosophy rests on\none principle: no rules. Redefine the confines of your mind, explore the limits, grab\nthe maximum yield out of life. Streetskating\nis not a newspaper shot of a boy being pulled down the road by his choking crossbreed mutt. Streetskating is bomb-dropping\noff car roofs, acid dropping off ledges, shaking past a cackle of secretaries, bus surfing,\ndownhill speed runs or a heated parkade\nsession, racing from top to bottom and\nsometimes dogpiling into one massive\nwipe-out halfway down.\nEvery Sunday the Bentall Centre gets a\nvisit from the twenty skaters bent on parkade action. There's nothing as intense as\na race round and round the ramps at full\nspeed, trying to inch past the guy in front\nwhile wondering whether a car will be coming up to greet you at turn 7.\nBlaring at maximum tilt to catch the bus\nwhile ignoring all pedestrians is pretty cool\ntoo, if you make it. They're usually dusty and\nworn thin in the butt and on the hips, patched over with repulsively mismatched swat-\nDISCORDER\nches of lime-green or paisley. The cuffs are\nsometimes rolled up for maximum clearance and flexibility of ankles and feet.\nShorts of various styles are also common\n(if only for the thick-skinned). The only thing\nnot worth wearing is a pair of expensive,\nlightweight, multi-coloured California specials; they tear to shreds the instant the\nbody meets the pavement.\nShoes are high-tops for ankle support\nand good flat tread design for maximum\nsurface-to-surface grip. Vans are the official\nskate shoe, but other canvas runners are\njust as effective. Most skaters refuse to\nthrow away a well-worn set of footwear. The\nresult is many coatings of shoe-goo, knots\nup and down the laces, and duct tape holding the toes in and the sides together.\nSome sort of skate-T is also common,\nusually printed with a favorite skateboard\nmanufacturer logo. The shirt may have long\nsleeves or the sleeves cut off, it may have\nnumerous rips in it. It may well be less than\nhalf a shirt.\nGloves are used to lessen the severity of\nslapping palms on the sidewalk. Leather\njackets, team vest, socks and hairstyle are\nall optional. Jewellery and scarves are a\nliability because they can get caught in the\nwheels and cause the skater's face to kiss\nthe concrete.\nAlthough it may turn the stomach of a\nfashion designer, the skater's gear is comfortable and it works. With the addition of\na hot band name written in felt pen, a sticker here and there, with an outfit that is\nglued, pinned, patched and taped together,\nwith cuts, abrasions, and scabs on exposed\nskin, and with board underfoot, the skater\nsets himself apart from the non-skating\nworld.\nA skateboard is not a fashion accessory.\nOn the physical level it's an extension of\nyour feet. On the mental level, it reflects\nyour outlook on life. Some skaters live on\ntheir boards. Their three albums,\nthe independently released Human Conflict and\nSecrets of the I Ching, and their new LP The\nWishing Chair have established the band as one\nof the rising voices in American music. Terry\nMcDermott recently spoke to Maniac John Lombardo about the bands history and music.\nDiscorder: Let's start with something trivial and\nmove onward from there. How did you come about\nchoosing the name 10,000 Maniacs?\nJohn: In the early days we rented a huge warehouse in our little town, Jamestown, because\nthere was nothing going on. It was a pretty boring town. This warehouse was going to be used\nas a meeting place for artists and some dancers\nand musicians. There were about three bands\nthat formed out of this warehouse. Then at the\nend of the summer as they were all breaking up,\nwe all got together and just sort of played in bars\nwith a real conglomeration of musicians from\neach band. We choose the name 10,000 Maniacs\nas a bit of a joke and to irritate the local people.\nAlso that people who were into heavy metal cover\nbands wouldn't necessarily come to see us and\nyell AC/DC requests at us. We just wanted to let\npeople know what side of the fence we were on.\nIn those days we were a little more aggressive\nsounding but now I think it works in an ironic way,\nalthough sometimes people tend to make huge\npresuppositions based on your name. I'm not\nsure if we're limiting the number of people who\nmight come and see us.\nD: What was it like to work in Jamestown, N.Y?\nIs that a college town?\nJ: No, it's not. There's a little community college. I think a lot of the people in the band actually met there. Dennis and Steve ran the radio\nstation there. That's how they first met Natalie.\nShe was like a 16-year-old student there and she\ncame in with an armful of reggae records one\nafternoon. They talked her into coming down to\nrehearsals for their band. In the early days she\ndidn't really want to come. We would have to\nbribe her to show up. In the last 4 years she's\nreally turned into quite a performer.\nD: You put out two records before The Wishing\nChair, Secrets of the l-Ching and Human Conflict No. 5. / understand that you recorded one or\nboth of them for $500?\nJ: Both of them. There's a little four-year col-\nJohn Lombardo\nlege near where we live called Fidelity State and\nthey have a program there where people become\nrecording engineers. Most of the time they're\nmusic majors so they record themselves, but we\nfound people who wanted to work on outside projects. They were both practically done on the first\ntakes, all the way through. There was very little\noverdubbing. It was strange to see reiews of them\nlater criticizing the production not realizing that\nwe did it all ourselves, and in two or three afternoons.\nD: It really puts the emphasis on the strong\nsongwriting of the band.\nJ: That's something that we have always been\nreally concerned with. I see bands all the time\nin which the players are more accomplished on\ntheir instruments than we are, but they don't\nseem to have any logic to what they're doing. It's\nlike a good actor in a bad play. You're only as\ngood as the script. I think as far as a band goes\nit boils down to the script or the songwriting.\nD: There are particular songs in which the band\nreally takes a stance socially. 'Among the Americans\" is one that stands out. Does the band write\nsongs with the intention of dealing with certain\nissues?\nJ: I tnink so. So many people have used the\nsame topics over and over again. Somebody\nwalking out on you, or being in love, or I have\nto be myself. It's all first person stuff. I guess we\nare just concerned with larger issues. The music\nthat touched us the most has been music that\nhas had positive social implications and meaning. We try not to be preachy. It's not like we are\nsuggesting any specific answers. We just want\npeople to think about their situation a little bit.\nIt's a quiet despair really. Talking about the social'\nissues and the unfairness of the wealth distribution. Not that every song is about that. We like\nto think that every song is individual.\nD: It's interesting that you use the phrase 'quiet\ndespair.' I was speaking with a band from Britain\nand they use the same term to describe what they\nwere doing. It's an interesting parallel between\nAmerica and Britain in that way.\nJ: In Britain people use music so much more.\nMusic is a much more important part of their\nlives. There are 3 or 4 weekly music newspapers.\nThe whole emphasis is on new bands. You're\nreally held accountable as a musician for the\nlyrical content, for the subjects they sing about.\nIn America, groups are given so much freedom,\nthey are never challenged. No one ever pinned\ndown Michael Jackson and said, \"Why are you\nso irresponsible? And why, since you have this CITR fm 102 cable 100\nRobert Buck\nhuge public forum, why can't you use it?\" Everyone says what a nice person he is, but his lyrics\nare just as sexist and tacky as anyone else's.\nThey're not held accountable for perpetuating attitudes of sexual violence. We just don't demand\nmuch, in Britain and Europe they demand ever\nso much more.\nD: / think it's realizing the influence that music\nhas on people.\nJ: Exactly, because when a kid in Britain doesn't\nhave a job or doesn't have a car or doesn't have\na blaster to walk around with, he more or less\nidentifies with a certain music or a certain band\nthat ne might follow. Whereas in America, if\nyou're a 16-year-old kid, you've got your own car\nand you have a tape machine and you've got a\ngirlfriend. You don't identify with a band, you\nidentify with other Corvette owners. We have so\nmany other things to identify ourselves with that\naren't present in Europe or Britain that it is logical\nto be loyal to a particular kind of music or a particular band.\nD: Your new album was produced by Joe Boyd.\nHow did you meet up with him and how do you\nthink he affected your work?\nJ: We met Joe a few years ago. The booking\nagent that we nave in N.Y. was sharing a floo(\nin a building with Hannibal Records, which is\nJoe's label. He said, \"I'm booking this band, Joe,\nyou got to come hear them, they're kind of like\nfolk-punk or something.\" Joe came to see us and\nhe was quite impressed. He expressed an interest in working with us. Once we signed with Elec-\ntra and they started suggesting different producers. We really wanted to work with Joe because\nof his timeless production. Joe, on most of his\nrecords, had created... some of the old Fairport\nConvention, McGarrigle Sisters and Nick Drake\nrecords sounded like they were recorded on another planet. Very weird and very haunting, and\nwe sort of wanted that quality. Joe was concerned with an overview of our work rather than\nspecific guitar settings or whatever.\nD: You must be facing comparisons with REM\nas their new album is also being produced by Joe\nBoyd.\nJ: In almost every article that's been written\nabout us, REM has been mentioned. We don't\nget too bummed out about it. We just finished\ntouring with them. I don't mind when people\nmention it. It was a bit of a drag because we settled on Joe first and actually we gave them Joe's\ntapes and they asked if they could use him too.\nThey squeezed in before us. We knew their\nalbum would be coming out before ours, so\nSteven Gustafson\neverytime there was a review of our album it said:\nJoe Boyd, REM's producer. It was a little frustrating but we don't feel that uptight about it.\nD: / don't really see the comparison myself.\nSomeone mentioned to me that they thought\nNatalie Merchant was a female Mike Stipe.\nJ: I don't see it either. Some people say the way\nthe lyrics are somewhat unintelligible is similar\nbut in terms of our approaches they're really\nquite different. We're both very supportive of each\nother but I don't think there is anything too\nobvious.\nD: Is it true that you were sort of adopted down\nin Athens, Georgia?\nJ: In a vague way. We moved down to Atlanta\nin 1983 because we had some friends down\nthere who told us that we could get signed and\nwork every night of the week. We went down\nthere and we didn't make any money, but I think\nwe made a lot of initial contacts which helped\nin the long run. Plus it was great to work in an\nenvironment where the other bands would come\nout to your gigs, be extremely supportive, and\nlet you stay at their houses. It was very refreshing.\nIn the area that we came from, the bands were\na lot more bitchy and resentful of each other and\nit was great to be in an environment that was extremely positive. In the world's history some of\nthe great movements in art and theatre have\nbeen a real scene where people weren't afraid\nto work together.\nD: How do you feel about the whole American\nrock revival?\nJ: It's weird. We spent some of the summer in\nLondon recording our last album. The press was\ntalking about this American invasion and we were\nbeing lumped in with other bands. 10,000 Maniacs, Los Lobos, Jason & the Scorchers. I don't\nknow what the common denominator is other\nthan we don't use a drum machine. There's a\ncomparable movement in Britain that's a reaction to the slick synth. You have a real folk-punk\nmovement going on there with The Pogues, the\nBoothill Foottappers and the Men They Couldn't\nHang. I think it's a pendulum reaction. The sense of powerlessness stops\nus from getting involved (even though we know\nour complacency is morally wrong). We do not\nunderstand the consequences of our lack of action. This is not surprising, because this is how\nwe have learned to behave and react. Ambivalence has been, in our recent past, an acceptable outlook. Imagine how effective we would\nbecome if we gave the world even half the attention that we lavish on our stereos, VCRs, etc.!\nOur arms race still exists because we are\nsilent. We must decide not to tolerate this situation any longer. The largest obstacle is our fear,\nwhich manifests itself as a lack of concern for\nthe world around us. Some people thrive on this\nimpassiveness: it allows them to gain influence\nand maintain large military budgets.\nOur scientific and artistic accomplishments are\nshining proof of human creative intelligence. The\nability to resolve difficult tasks is another hallmark\nof our civilization. Surely we can use this ability\nto overcome our single greatest blunder: the\nnuclear bomb. You can be part of this process\nby acknowledging that your world encompasses\nthe whole earth. In doing this you will become\nmore aware of the complexity of our biggest problems, as well as gain insight into solutions. No\nlonger can you take your life for granted. A\ngreater appreciation for life on this planet makes\nit very rewarding to know that one is working to\npreserve it and nurture its future, regardless of\nthe obstacles that are encountered. No matter\nhow intangible a possible solution may be when\nyou first become actively involved, the fact remains that nothing is resolved without effort.\nThere are several effective paths you can pursue to grasp an understanding of the situation.\nReading (a short book list accompanies this\narticle) is one of the best ways to find answers\n(to questions like 'What about the Russian's?',\netc.). Weighing contrary views is also very useful\nin gaining a broad understanding and will enable\nyou to confront those viewsTn an enlightened\nmanner.\nSome of the people most in need of this edification are the politicians who make or vote on\nmilitary policies. President Reagan dangerously\nignores even the basic ingredients that affect\nissues on which he makes decisions; he lacks\nknowledge of the weapons themselves and does\nnot know those officials involved in weapons\npolicy decisions. A discussion between Dr. Helen\nCaldicott and President Reagan in 1982 illustrates this very clearly. After being asked a question put to him by Dr. Caldicott regarding weapons, he answered with questionable accuracy:\n\"/ asked him where he got his data, and he\ndidn't seem to know. I asked him if they came\nfrom T.K. Jones, and he didn't apear to know\nwho this was (T.K. Jones is the Duputy Undersecretary of Defence and Research and Engineering, Strategic and Nuclear Forces in the\nPentagon\u00E2\u0080\u0094one of the officials in charge of\ndefence policy who made the famous statement, 'If there are enough shovels to go\naround, everybody's going to make it.')\n\"President Reagan, during the 1982 European CITR fm 102 cable 100\n\t\ntrip, said to the Westminster Parliament, London, that with a military buildup combined with\ndiplomatic, economic, and propaganda campaigns, the Soviet Union might collapse into\nthe 'ash heap of History'.\"\nHow's that for diplomatic, informed leadership?\nClearly, our leaders desperately need our input, encouragement, and knowledge. It is quite\namazing what politicians can accomplish, if there\nis significant public pressure (dangle your votes\nin front of their noses!). We must make them\nrealize that no one has immunity to a nuclear\nexplosion.\nPROBABLY THE MOST significant lesson\nwe have learned is that the decisions\nwhich have brought us to this dangerous\npoint in history, have been made and have flourished as a result of pretence. Before the dawn\nof the nuclear age, our species did not consider\nthe possibility that we could become extinct by\nour own hand. Responsible decisions are not\npossible when people refuse to acknowledge\nreality. Given the will, we can reshape our destiny. To do so we must accept our moral responsibility that condemns nuclear strategies as unethical delusions. They are simply contrary to\nhumanity's best interests. Dealing with international conflict by using nuclear strategies is simply out of the question.\nIn actualizing this moral responsibility, the first\nstep is to increase public awareness. The Walk\nFor Peace in Vancouver will do this\nLarger turnouts get more press coverage (local\nand international) and arouse more curiosity. Increased interest is evident in a turnout that grows\nlarger every year. Our local walk in Vancouver\nsets an example for other cities (100,000 people\nfrom our community is a fantastic display of\nunity). This growth must continue. Your participation will show the world you are willing to stand\nup for your beliefs.\nTo be part of such a large show of combined\nwill for the good of mankind is inspiring. Of these: 18% attended UBC;\n19% attended high school (not every day, mind you); 19% attended\nanother post-secondary institution. The remaining 44% were either\nstudents of life or were, I presume, deceased. 152 (62%) individuals purported to be male, 73 said they were female, and the rest championed\nequality by refusing to answer the question. (Most of these didn't give\ntheir age, either.)\nA whopping 95% of the respondents had listened to CITR before. Of\nthose who had listened (and are listening) 11% tuned in once a month;\n6% tuned in once a week; 35% listened a few times a week, and 47%\nwere habitual users. (Don't ask me what happened to the other 1%. I\nthink they're trapped inside the decimal places.)\n59% tuned into CITR on FM, 41% on cable; these numbers, interestingly, are close to the numbers of those having problems with our signal:\n62% reported problems while 38% were lucky enough to receive CITR\ndistortion-free.\n\"Hail to the new boss, Same as the old boss\"\nTHIS WAS THE PART where you got to compare the new regime of\ndictatorial DJ's with the old regime of megolomaniac announcers.\n60% of those responding enjoyed CITR's programming more than a year\nago, and 54% enjoy it more than they did two years ago. CITR fm 102 cable 100\nVinyl\nFine Young Cannibals\nFine Young Cannibals\n(I.R.S.)\nTO TAKE AN ANALOGY FROM SPORT, 1979\nwas a good draft year for British music. It was\nthe year of the Two-Tone ska revival, a movement\nwhich spawned a number ot talented bands, including the Specials, the Selecter and the Beat.\nThe main aim of these and other bands was to\nmake the youth of the U.K. forget about the dole\nqueue for awhile and go out and dance. For a\nyear or so, it worked. Then in 1981 the Specials'\nLynval Golding was stabbed after a gig in Sheffield and it was \"Ghost town\" time. Most of the\nbands broke into bitter, disillusioned fragments.\nThe Beat lasted a bit longer than most, but in\n1983 they too bit the dust. Now, over two-and-a-\nhalf years later, Andy Cox and David Steele have\nfollowed General Publicans Dave and Roger\nback into the musical arena with the Fine Yo! \u00E2\u0080\u00A2 -\"\u00C2\u00AB\nCannibals. But while General Public sounds an\n'awful lot like the Beat with synthesizers, the Fine\nYoung Cannibals have modified the Beat sound\nby incorporating something of the cool soul style\ncurrently popular in England.\nFor that reason alone, this record should slide\neasily into this continent's Top 40 charts. (After\nall, if Sade can make it...) But there are better\nreasons for this record to make a significant\nimpression on this side of the pond. One is the\nsemi-revelation that Cox and Steele must have\nbeen more vital to the Beat than most people\nsupposed\u00E2\u0080\u0094the tunes on this record are surprisingly catchy, besides being superbly executed.\nThe band's real strength, however, is the third\nCannibal, Roland Gift.\nWithout him the record, although pleasant\nenough, would be a fairly innocuous collection\nof pop songs. Gift's presence, though, adds\nanother dimension; his voice transforms the\nmaterial, and conjures up images of Otis Redding or the Temptations. Make no mistake, the\nguy can sing.\nVerdict\nHe gets plenty of opportunity to put his gift to\nwork: standouts are \"Like A Stranger,\" \"Couldn't\nCare More,\" and \"Johnny Come Home.\" The latter cut, the single, is rather typical of the mood\nof the record, being a plea to a teenage runaway\nfrom the distraught parents: \"Who do you know?\n/Where will you stay? /Big city life is not what they\nsay...Johnny, we're sorry /Won't you come on\nhome?\"\nThe same loneliness and despair, set to exquisite pop melodies, permeate much of the\nalbum; even the love songs are about disintegrating relationships. The best of these is \"Funny How Love Is,\" a shameless tear-jerker featuring ex-Beat sax man, Saxa, and a devastating\nvocal from Gift. (Footnote to any girl who has ever\ndumped her boyfriend: If this song leaves you\nwith a clear conscience then compared to you\nAlexis Colby is a warm, caring, and compassionate human being.)\nDespite the generally morbid lyrics (\"Couldn't\nCare More\" is apparently sung by a guy who is\ntrying to ignore a murder in the next-door apartment), the Fine Young Cannibals hit a groove that\nall too many bands seem to be missing these\ndays, and Gift's voice alone is enough to quell\nmost criticism. Not a record to change your life,\nbut you can never have enough catchy pop\nmusic, can you?\n\u00E2\u0080\u0094lain Bowman\nYoung Fresh Fellows\nTopsy TUrvy\nPopllama Products\n1} M STANDING ON THE CORNER OF HAS-\ntings and Carrall, just hanging around, when\n[i us man asks me for a quarter for an alleged cup\nof coffee. I put down my record bag to reach into my pocket for some spare change and this guy\ngrabs my bag and starts running down the street.\nSo I jump up and down and yell thief, but all the\nassorted Uncle Wigglys sprawled out on the\nbenches surrounding me just stay put and leer\nat me because I can't chase after the thief because my hand is stuck in the pockets of my\njeans because they're way too tight. One of the\nmore articulate of the derilicts says: \"What's da\nmatter, sweetie? Did that nasty man rip off your\nYoung Fresh Fellows' album? Heh, heh, heh.\"\nI swallow and nod. Two great big tears begin\nto slide down my face as I think about the loss\nof the most totally cool album of 1985\u00E2\u0080\u0094Topsy Tur-\nvy by the Young Fresh Fellows. I start thinking\nabout the human condition and I decide to go\nto the Lotus Hotel for one or five beers.\nI sit next to this old man who seems friendly\nand I begin to teil him about the thief, but I can't\ntell whether he understands English or not. He\nnods and smiles energetically, so I finish my\nstory. After I finish drinking my five or ten beers\nI start feeling burned. The man who watched me\ndrink my beers offers to drive me around town\nto look for the thief in his \"expansive sport car.\"\nI say I have to go to the bathroom and I crawl\nout of this window.\nI decide that I need supplies in order to hunt\ndown this guy properly, so I stop off at the Save-\nOn Surplus on Cambie and West Hastings. I purchase a hunting knife and a Safari hat. The clerk\nat the counter points out that they're having a\nspecial on deactivated hand grenades, so I get\none of those too.\nThus equipped, I go back to Pigeon Square.\n\"Okay, rubbies, Where's the guy who took my\nYoung Fresh Fellows' album?\" I say as I wave\nmy hand grenade menacingly at the benches.\nOne old guy says:\n\"Is that the record with 'Searchin' USA,' 'Sharing Patrol Theme' and 'Hang Out Right' on it?\"\n\"Yeah,, what about it? Do you know where it\n' is?\" I say as I narrow my eyes meaningfully and\nunsheath my Save-On Surplus hunting knife.\n\"Cool record. Joe only wanted to tape it so he\ncould hear it on his walkman because he doesn't\nhave a turntable. Here.\" I grab my record, press\nit close to my chest and yell over my shoulder:\n\"Home taping is killing music.\"\n\u00E2\u0080\u0094Julia\nMalcolm McLaren\nSwamp Thing\nMALCOLM MCLAREN \u00E2\u0080\u0094 INSTIGATOR OF\nmusical perversity, abuser of cultural identity, the man who went through punk, funk, got\nhipper, then did opera\u00E2\u0080\u0094has let down his front\nof creative upheaval and allowed (?) to be\nreleased a collection of material recorded between '82 and '84, his hip-hop \"rap-off\" period.\nThis record affords a chance to view the fine\nline between artistic expression and creative indulgence, the line that Malcolm knows too well.\nHis past efforts, and present ones for that matter, have always bordered on the absurdly pretentious, and because of this he has frequently succeeded in shaking up our perceptions and expectations of modern pop/rock music, making us\nrealize the transientness of our trend systems.\nHe has created his own trends through ingenious\nmanipulation of present popular needs, proceeded to rip them off, and then gone on to do the\nsame elsewhere. In \"Duck Rock Cheer,\" for example, he creates a rah-rah atmosphere for a\nsong that he has already recorded, as if this new\nsong is an excited hallelujah response by the\npeon who exists only to ingest and respond to\nhis whimsical meanderings. Both \"Duck Rock\nCheer\" and \"Duck Rocks/Promises\" are variations on \"First Couple Out,\" a song released with DISCORDER\nMadame Buttedly. Yet all three create their own\nfeel, their own atmosphere mostly though the\nnon-stop production/manipulation of Malcolm\nand Trevor Horn, without leaving the rather\nlimited format of the song idea itself.\nThere is no need to describe in detail his collection of songs individually, since they all are\nbasically formed on the same principle, that of\nsonic and trend manipulation. Malcolm McLaren\nis a modern man, in the sense that he abuses\nall that is of the modern world\u00E2\u0080\u0094technology,\ncross-culturalism, multi-media\u00E2\u0080\u0094and quite often\nspews out something original, even humourous,\ndeep in cultural connotations. Anyone who cannot giggle at \"B.I. Bikki,\" at least in private, has\nno sense of humour.\nTo admit that you like Malcolm's efforts, or at\nleast that you appreciate them, is to be honest\nand open to the constantly changing and fiercely\nintangible concept that is called popular music\n(no categories, please). Even through material\nnot intended to be released as an album, one\ncan sense the creative and thought-provoking\ntwist of what we have all heard before (and of\nwhat some people even hold to be sacred!).\nMcLaren is not a musician, I would not dare\neven to call him a songwriter, but he is a producer, one who creates, manipulates, agrivates\nand agitates, and makes a good living at it. If you\nthink that's not a useful means toward a desired\nend, stop buying records.\n\u00E2\u0080\u0094Robert Shea\nLive Skull\nBringing Home the Bait\nHomestead (U.S.)\niir* UITARS. INSTRUMENTS WHOSE POT-\nvJ ential for innovation is seemingly\nexhausted.\nHahahahahaha...Try telling that to Fred Frith,\nor better yet, Live Skull. While playing it closer\nto the rock vert than Frith or his cohorts, this NYC\ncombo manages to wrench some equally mind-\nnumbing sounds out of the six-string dinosaurs.\nLess eccentric than Sonic Youth, less blatantly\nsadistic than Swans, Live Skull shares space\nwith these bands in every 'hip' music magazine\naround. They also share a predilection for brutal,\nvolcanic sewage that masquerades as music,\nand stark, violent lyrical imagery. The final common characteristic is their use of the guitar as\nan abrasive, almost industrial, element of sound.\nOn Bringing Home the Bait, their second 12\"\neffort, Live Skull continues to use the traditional\nrock rhythm section to create melody while the\natonal vocals and guitar wash over (and through!)\nit all like an acoustic avalanche of mud. Distinguished performances are put in by Marnie\nGreenholz, bass and vocals (her lyrics on\n\"Sparkey\" describe a violent sexual encounter\nwith a car; positively anti-social!), James Lo,\ndrums, Tom Paine and Mark C, guitar and\nvocals. The only major difference between this\nLP and their self-titled debut is the production.\nMartin Bisi (of Material fame) has removed one\nor two unnecessary layers of shit from the sound,\nexposing an even rawer, more visceral LP than\none could have hoped for.\nThat's fine, you say, but why should I listen to\nBringing Home the Bait? Is this record pleasant?\nEnjoyable? Well, those are relative terms, and\nshould not be the only determining factors in\none's choice of music, especially today, when\nwonderfully disturbing sounds are coming out of\neveryone's hometown. Maire Brennan's\nvoice is hauntingly wonderful and the whole\nalbum exudes a pleasant ambience, while retaining the band's Celtic roots. It's hard to differentiate between the tracks as they all seem to run\ntogether, but my personal favourites are \"The\nWild Cry\" and \"Journey's End.\"\nFairport Convention are back with their first\nstudio LP since 1979, and are currenlty on a world\ntour. Dave Pegg, Simon Nicol and Dave Mattacks\nare aided by former Soft Machine violinist Ric\nSaunders, and occasionally Richard Thompson\nand The Albion Band's Cathy Le Surf, and provide some fine dance music, highlighted by \"instrumental Medley '85\" and Thommo's guitar\nwork on \"Head in a Sack.\" Established Brit folk\nstalwart Ralph McTell penned three songs, including the tale of Wat Tyler who led the peasants' revolt in 15th Century England, but the\noutstanding song is \"The Hiring Fair.\" All in all,\na welcome return for the band who started the\nfirst folk revival in the U.K. back in the Sixties.\nChristy Moore has the definitive Irish singing\nvoice and he also gets help from his former Moving Hearts compatriots Andy Irvine and Liam\nO'Flynn on his latest LP Ordinary Man, which\ncontains a good mix of serious, politically correct songs like the title track, \"Blantyre Explosion\" and \"Quiet Desperation,\" and more flippant ditties like \"Delirium Tremens\" and \"Reel\nin the Flickering Light.\" One of the outstanding\nfolk LPs of recent years.\nDick Gaughan's 1983 LP A Different Kind of\nLove Song has been released in Canada for the\nfirst time. This man is Scotland's premier singer/\nguitarist. The songs here are some originals plus\ncovers of more famous peoples' work, e.g. Leon\nRosselsson's controversial \"Stand Up for Judas.\"\nCheck it out.\nOn the import front, Clive Gregson's Strange\nPersuasions, Moving Hearts' The Storm and The\nBattlefield Band's On the Rise (featuring pipes\non \"Bad Moon Rising\") are all recommended.\nIgnore Clive Gregson at your peril! The man is\na monster guitarist/singer who used to front Any\nTrouble and toured with Richard Thompson's\nband last year.\nFinally, check Thommo's video LP Across a\nCrowded Room recorded \"live\" at Barrymore's\nin Ottawa. We hadn't the inclination nor the breath to explain to each and every\none of them the real reason why we wanted their\nusless travel chits. To these stalwarts of the status\nquo, our dream\u00E2\u0080\u0094to construct a monument to\nmodern transportation, in this year of Expo, from\nMetro Transit tickets\u00E2\u0080\u0094would undoubtedly seem\nridiculous.\nIt was becoming clear, by viewing the circus\naround us, that the attempt to initiate the construction of familiar content in a new form is often\ntreated with a suspicion akin to superstition.\nMonuments abound, yet we wanted to approach\nthe subject with different materials. These so-\ncalled \"new\" traditionalists are the most resistant to the process of change because it seems\nto utterly confound their value system, tenuously based on what they think the world should be\nas opposed to what it actually is. And there were\nenough \"new\" traditionalists in the Seabus Terminal that day to re-elect the Socreds.\nMomentarily dismayed, we crossed Cordova\nto the Sears Centre where our attention was\narrested by an unusual flurry of activity coming\nfrom beneath the building in the truck loading\nbay. Descending the ramp to the dark below, we\nentered an environment quite unlike that of the\naverage shipping and receiving depot.\nSituated on the truck turntable, a huge surface\ndisc that rotates to allow for easier maneouvrabili-\nty in tight corners, were three screens projecting\nrecorded images of the live action happening\nbefore us. The action consisted of a succession\nof statuesque characters synchronously moving\nwith the slow but steady spin of the truck turntable: a young girl twirling her baton, a 50's-style\nglamour queen, a woman dressed in Red Army\nfatigues, lissome men shooting light guns,\nholding disco glitter balls a la Atlas, and blowing saxophones. They were shrouded in smoke\npierced by intense lighting effects and propelled\nby a hypnotically melodic symphony of electronic\nsound.\nWhat form of show biz glitz is this, we silently\nwondered? It was theatrical in its consideration\nof site and viewer perspective, and it was dynamically presented in its provocative use of different\nmediums. The familiar references were easily\nidentified, yet its form did not immediately expose\nits function. What was it? Art?\nIt was, as we were quickly informed, Body\nFluid, a video installation performance produced\nby local video artist and bon vivant, Paul Wong.\nVideo installation? It sounded suspiciously to us\nlike a new art form! Rather than recoil with horror,\nwe decided to investigate, hoping to illuminate\nour initial discovery. Picking up a strikingly\ndesigned pamphlet entitled The Video Inn and\nWestern Front present Luminous Sites, we found\nthat Body Fluid was one of ten video installations\noccurring at nine Vancouver galleries and city\nspaces from late February to early April. The exhibition presented works by local artists Wong,\nKate Craig and Cornelia Wyngaarden, Ian Carr-\nHarris, Vera Frankel and Randy & Berenicci from\nToronto, Max Dean from Ottawa, Barbara Stein-\n.- CALUtJG, MISSION COhmpt i\nieSy T AM tJoti OtJ Trie ACTUAL\nthat's that, cocimuoeZ? NO,\nno sigwj of /wv eM-HounccwetJteNte\nstones so far . HA/e o(XY etjawmeo\nTux? pfscxwjr fYivmeK veAieft? wo\nR HAlRQeufl\u00C2\u00A3T/H^W$TRj6l/n\u00C2\u00AB0CVTL\u00C2\u00A3r. CITR fm 102 cable 100\nman and David Tomas from Montreal, and\nTomiyo Sasaki from New York.\nEach work was presented in the context of\n\"site-specific,\" utilizing the communicative\naspects of the video medium to promote a\ndynamic interaction between the work, its particular location, and ultimately, the viewer. The\npamphlet succinctly pointed out that \"artistic\npriorities in the various works encompass the\nareas of painterly use of colour and light, the\nsculptural designation of form and space, the\nsocial discussion of content, theatrical references\nto cultural motifs, the contemplation of place and\ntime, and the realities of technical prescence.\"\nWhew!\nWE KNEW WE WERE ON tosomething.\nHaving long been averse to the contemporary art world with its institutionalization of art\nas a market commodity, frustrated by the imper-\nviousness of traditional forms to a world changed\nby mass technology, we found the combination\nof elements through the video installation an exciting prospect.\nNot only did it seem to offer more opportunity\nfor active involvement on the viewer's part, it\nchallenged the \"new\" traditionalist notion of art\nin the social and technological context by presenting familiar concepts in new forms. This we\ncould understand; after all, it hadn't been easy\ntrying to convince the people at Expo HQ of the\nlegitimacy of constructing a transportation monument from Metro Transit tickets.\nSeeking inspiration and a fuller understanding\nof the video installation, we visited several of the\nLuminous Sites. Granted, seven of the ten were\ninstalled in galleries not generally frequented by\nthe layman, and of the remaining three installations, only Body Fluid and Kate Craig's Clay Cove\nNewfoundland could be referred to as truly 'site-\nspecific' inasmuch as their respective sites had\nas much to do with their effectiveness in presentation as their content.\nClay Cove was located on the 31st floor of the\nPark Place office tower, and there Craig astutely\nemployed the seductive qualities of the magnificent harbour view. Once drawn to the window,\nthe viewer was treated to an aural montage of\nparticular Newfoundland sounds. In one corner\na video screen ran tape loops of the Atlantic\nlapping against the cove, reminding the viewer\nthat while it may well be the Pacific below, the effects\nare similar.\nAll of the installations illuminated their respective sites by attending to the dynamic interaction\nbetween technique and spatial texture, in which\nvideo played the connecting role. This interaction was manipulated by the chosen content of\nthe work: robot-video/letraset literature/fabrics of\nmyth and adventure/islands in the sky/cargo\ncults/dying fish/stagnant momuments/revolving\nirrelevance/a spouse and a beast/self-reference.\nBingo! What we had was an exercise in aesthetics, a crash-course in a conceptualism that\nhas no beginning and no end, just a middle.\nSpeaking with Daina Augaitis, who curated\nLuminous Sites with Karen Henry, we discovered\nthat this exhibition, the first of its kind to be\npresented in the city, was primarily an attempt\nat not only \"legitimizing\" the relatively new genre\nof video art in the traditionalist view, but also\naccentuating its accessibility to the populace.\nThe technology required is generally available\nand in the case of the video installation it can\nbecome an integral part of the work. The mystery\nand imagination is provided by the view. The airport was small\nand simple and thankfully free of stale, canned\nmusic.\nI assembled my bicycle and, in a light rainfall,\nheaded out to enjoy my annual, tropical pilgrim-\nmage. Happiness soon turned to terror as a car\nwas heading straight for me, on the same side\nof the road! I dove for the shoulder and the car,\nindifferent to my acrobatics, sped past. My first\ncritical lesson had been learned: they drive on\nthe left in Fiji.\nFiji consists of 300 islands in the South Pacific.\nThe population is dominated by two groups. The\nnative Fijiians are large, strong and friendly people. For the most part they still live in communal\nvillages of 300 people or less, pursuing a traditional lifestyle of fishing and simple farming for\nsubsistance.\nThe other major cultural group is East Indian\nin origin. Originally brought to Fiji to work as indentured labourers on copra and sugar cane\nplantations, they now outnumber the Fijiians and\ncontrol economic life in the islands.\nThe two groups keep fairly separate and,\nthough they are highly suspicious of each other,\nthey are proud of the fact that there are few instances of outright racism and fewer still of racially-motivated violence.\nThis separateness extends into cultural life.\nThe Indian population is mostly Hindu, but there\nare Sikhs and both groups have schools where\ntraditional dance and music are taught. As a\nresult religious events and cultural celebrations\nare rich, colourful and noisy affairs.\nThe Fijiians have a simpler style. They love to\nsing and their voices are strong and full. They\nharmonize naturally and seemingly in as many\nparts as there are singers. There is usually someone in the village who plays guitar and he will\noften find accompaniment from a washtub bass.\nThe songs are slow and mellow. They sing about\nromance and the land they live in. Every inhabited area has its own song, some with so many\nverses that they create a detailed travel guide for\nthose who dare to stray from the beaten track.\nI stayed for awhile on a small island in the\nYasawa group. One night, after sharing many\nbowls of Kaxa (the local, non-alcoholic intoxicant)\nwith the village elders, the talk turned to the\npending arrival of a cruise ship. The village had\na contract with the cruise line to perform a meke\non board. A meke is a traditional Fijiian song and\ndance celebration.\nThe ship arrived the next day and in the evening I went with the villagers to check out their\nperformance. Villagers of all ages took part in\nthe fast-paced, energetic affair\u00E2\u0080\u0094a stark contrast\nto the lazy singing sessions I had grown accustomed to. The music was provided by guitar and\nukelele and rhythm was produced by clapping\nand beating a long, drumlike instrument against\nthe ground.\nTHE WOMENS' DANCES were not unlike the\nHawaiian hula in that the narrative element\nwas communicated through hand signs and arm\nmotions. But where Polynesian dances are characterized by smooth and sensuous motion, the\nFijiians move in a sharp, almost stacatto style.\nThe men dance too, and their dances were\ntraditionally used as preparation for battle. They\nare noisy and aggressive as they move in unison,\nfaces fierce and weapons held high. It was an\nexciting and moving experience.\nLater I asked the chief about the meke. He told'\nme that only villages that do performances for\nthe tourists are maintaining this particular tradition. The kids learn the songs and dances only\nwhen they decide to become part of the village\nmeke group, or if they plan to work at a resort.\nThere is a government sponsored traditional\ndance group but they are virtually ignored by\nnative Fijiians.\nThere is no TV. broadcast in Fiji, so the radio\nis a popular source of entertainment. This, and\nthe need for entertainers who can play modern\nmusic at the resorts, has created a small but solid\nmusic industry. This is one area where the cultural boundaries between the Fijiians and the\nApril 1986\nThis month\nfrom Fiji\nIndians begin to melt. There is so much respect\nfor the human voice that excellent singers record\npopular releases in Hindu, Fijiian and English,\nregardless of their racial origin.\nThere are a lot of covers of first world pop hits\nbut there are a lot of original recordings as well.\nAlmost every resort has its own house band and\ntheir recordings enjoy a reasonable popularity.\nAs far as imported music goes, Fiji is not much\ndifferent than anywhere else. Reggae is extremely popular, and because Fiji was a British protectorate, English ska music sells well too. Otherwise, the music selection on pop radio is like listening to a light rock station in Vancouver. An FM\nstation hit the airwaves last year, but aside from\na few American and British rock specials, the\nselection is predictably bland.\nWith such a large Indian population it is not\nsurprising that there is one Hindu station dedicated to playing hits from the massive pop music\nindustry in India. To my untrained ear, much of\nthis music sounded like my stereotype of traditional Indian music; strange instruments, inconsistent rhythm and drone-like, nasally vocals. My\nIndian friends assured me that in fact, Indian pop\nmusic has its own distinct style.\nShortly before leaving Fiji I stayed in the capital\ncity, Suva. I was sitting on my bed in a $4.00 per\nnight dorm when my Fijiian roommate walked in\nand popped a tape into his ghetto blaster. It was\na locally-made medley of insipid hit songs, past\nand present.\nAn Indian family lived next door and in self-\ndefence they turned their radio way up and the\nstrange sounds of Indian music battled with the\nmediocre pop for aural supremacy. Then the\nbells started ringing in the church at the end of\nthe block. Soon the full congregation were belting out Christmas carols in multi-part harmony.\nAt first I was confused, then slightly terrified\nby the crazy cacophony. But then I remembered\nI was soon to return home and I laughed at\nmyself.
