Weeds have been described
as plants out of place. For example,
clover amongst onions. This was
scarcely correct, however. They
might better be classed as plants
not useful to man or beast. The
principal objections to them were
that they robbed growing plants of
food. When growing in grain they
made it harder to cut, took longer
time to cure,.required more twine
for binding, and greatly increased
the quantity to be hauled to barn
or stack. When growing amongst
|, roots or in gardens, they crowd and
shade the plants, necessitating more
labor and expense. Well directed
labor at the right time would abate
the nuisance- Nearly every weed
had its own method of distribution.
The common dandelion was disseminated by wind, water,, animals
and birds, also by implements going
from one farm to another. Birds
carry seeds on their feet 'thousands
of miles. The farmer sows them
wilfully when he sows cheap seeds.
Now what is; the best way to fight
them?
The first requisite was more
knowledge. If twenty -of the most
common weeds were on exhibition
not 10 per cent, of the people could
name, them. Each weed seed was
as distinctive as barley or oats.
School children should be taught to
kuow the weeds in their districts.
If they would gather them when in
flower, mount them on cardboard
and send duplicate to Professor
Fletcher at Ottawa, he would send
the common and botanical name together with the history of the plant.
Then, when the seeds ripen, the
children should gather the ripe
seed. They should be kept in
small glass bottles. The child
should then be taught to make a
drawing of the seed, which is done
readily by the aid -of a microscope.
He did not think this would take
up much time. It might be made
a pastime. If such a course were
pursued, there would be little danger of the rising generation buying
lambquarter for alsike, as was often
done now. He instanced a case
where some farmers sent for samples of grass seed. Tlie prices were
$6, $5.50, $5 and $4:50 per bushel.
! They examined the seed and decid-
Jed to buy the $5 seed. One of
! them asked the speaker's opinion.
' They wanted the seed for pasture,
! wanted red, white and alsike clover
and timothy. He asked the merchant who was acting as agent for
the seedsman if there was anything
else in the seed. He thought not.
Well, there were lots of weed seed
in it. What the farmers took to be
alsike was nothing but lamb quarter.
Red clover seed often contained
curl dock, sorrel and other weeds.
Weeds might be divided into five
classes: 1st, The simple annual,
such as mustard; 2nd, Annuals
that begin their growth in the fall
and ripen their seed in the following spring, such as shepherd's
purse; 3rd, The biennial, whose
leaves are broad and the second
year sends up a tall seed stalk, such
as burdock; 4th, Perennials, which
are reproduced from seed, such as
plantain; 5th, Perennials that are
reproduced from both seed and root
stalk, such as Canada thistle.
It is noticed that weeds which
are troublesome in meadows are
seldom found in hoed crops, or
vice versa. Meadows infested with
weeds should be broken up and
some other crop grown. Spring
cultivation kills fall annuals. By a
proper system of rotation of crops
the weeds could be reduced to a
minimum. Clover smothers most
weeds. Sheep eat 85 per cent, of
weeds.
Asked how to destroy sorrel, he
said to cultivate in hot weather.
Mr. Metcalfe endorsed this. He
advised breaking off the stems of
the fern while brittle. If this was
done as often as they appeared he
thought they would be killed, as
the plant grew from the starch
stored in the root.
Weeds were hard to get clear of
because they were so prolific in
seeds. One plant being capable of
producing countless numbers. He
advised allowing weeds to get well
started, so that the supply -of.plant
food in the root will be exhausted.
The Canada thistle was the easiest
weed to get rid of; a field . can be
cleared, in one season.
Ad experiment carried on- in Ren-
nie's -grounds, Toronto, showed
that if the lower leaves were cut off
the plant would die. These leaves
draw carbon dioxide and build up
root stalks. When lemoved, roots
are not reproduced. Cutting
thistles twice will kill them. Often
a mildew attacks the lower leaves
and kills it. If you will allow
thistle to bloom, thus using up the
starch in the roots, and-then cut
and use broad toothed cultivator,
the thistle will disappear. Ferns
grow from seed as well as from the
root stalk. In his section they had
no sorrel. Mr. Metcalfe said top
dressing with lime would kill it,
the lime taking up the oxalic acid.
Spent Over $2,000 Doctoring.
Mr. Joseph Pominville, of Stillwater, Minn., after having spent
over $2,000 with the best doctors
for stomach trouble, .vithout relief,
was advised to try a box of Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets.
Pie did so and is a well man to-day.
For sale by F.
