She waa born December 20, 1821,\nat Oxford, Miss., and Is the daughter\nof Captain Stephen Barton, who fought\nunder General Anthony Wayne. In her\nearly career Miss Barton was a school\nteacher. She founded a free school at\nBordentown, N. J., which, beginning\nwith six pupils, quickly grew until lt\nnumbered nearly 600.
