If thero is any truth at
all in the rumor mentioned in our
despatches this afternoon respecting
the uprising in India, one can easily
comprehend tho reason of Russia's
anxiety to iind a casus belli. A
rebellion in India would tie tlio
hands of Great Britain nud leavo
Russia and Germany to work out
their schemes of Turkish division
according to their own swoot will.
It is probably an idle rumor: we
hope it may be nothing more.
One of the most encouraging signs
of the times is the spirit of liberality manifested by the general public in cases of great calamities. In
the past few years tliis has beeu
manifested on several occasions, and
the late disastrous earthquake has
afforded another opportunity. Subscriptions, we are told, have been
pouring in from all sides, and it is
expected tliere wiil be no lack of
funds to meet every case of real
want. When men who have never
seen' or known each other will voluntarily contribute of their means
for the relief of each other's misfortunes, we conclude that the milk
of human kindness has by no means
become au unknown motive power
in the world. In modern times
men are learning more than ever
the. lesson tliat a man is his brother's keeper.
The telegraphic reports of the
late Belfast riots lead ono to suppose that the Orangemen were
greatly to blame for the part they
took in that disgraceful aflair. The
Belfast News puts a very different
phase on the riots, and, according
to its statement, the other party
was wholly the cause of the disorder. It is most difficult really to
ascertain the facts, but tliere is no
doubt that the primary cause of the
riots, a very peaceable and undemonstrative sabbath-school pic-nic,
afforded no pretext upon which any
reasonable person could commit a
breach of the peace. The managers of the pic-nic wero so anxious
to give no cause of offence that
they consented to go without a band
and without banners. It is not
likely thnt all the blame belongs to
one party, but Orangemen claim
that those who committed outrages
on the Catholics were not Orangemen but common rowdies.
The Gull* Ferry.
* Our friend of tho Nanaimo Free
Press now undertakes to establish
the probability of a railway ferry
between Vancouver ahd Nanaimo,
and expresses the opinion, that this
scheme will be carried out by the
uid of the imperial authorities. The
further the railway lino can be extended, tlie more will it likely benefit the country, but Wo have always
been doubtful of the feasibility or
economy of the gulf ferry. Our
cotemporary says Vancouver Island
holds the key to the position, from
a military point of view, because
the entrance to the gulf could not
be defended against an eneniy. On
the other hand the Colonist maintains that the "gates" can be easily
and perfectly defended by a battery
at Victoria uud Esquimalt, and that
with this protection tbo gulf would
be perfectly safe! These two journals agree on the ferry, because it
would magnify the importance of
the cities they represent, but they
difler widely in their military opinions. If the Colonist's military
theory were correct, it would undoubtedly be the most complete and
consistent. But it Is conspicuously
lame, inasmuch as it involves an
impossibility. There is not a military authority anywhere whb would
endorse it, or even suggest it. But
the. Free Press, while admitting
that the gulf cannot be defended,
proposes still to place the principal
defence on Vnncouver Island, and
connect that with the 0. F. 1". by
means of a ferry. If the gulf cannot be defended, what is to protect
the ferryi Does oui-cotemporary
propose to make it an ironclad ferry,
ana hnve it operated by ironolad
men, and. carry ironclad cars on it,
so that it will be impervious to ihe
cannon qf tlie enemy? If not, according to his own admission the
ferry us n military scheme is a delusion and a snare, while it could
never become a commercial success.
The only safe way to extend the
0. P. It. to Vancouver Island will
be by underground tunnel or by
some kind of bridge that has not
yet been invented, so that wo are
afraid the gulf will continue to
mark the western limit of that road
in spite of all editorial efforts to
carry it beyond.
Joseph Beaudln, M.B., Hull, P.Q.,
writes: Dr. Thomas' Eclectrie Oil commands a large and increasing sale which
it richly merits. I have always found It
exceedingly helpful; I use it In all cases
of rheumatism, as well as fractures and
dislocations. He is accompanied
by Mr. Griffith, his companion. He
tftpocfcs to catch' a Hudson Bay Co.'s
boat going from Norway House up the
Nelson River to Fort Nelson. This is
the manner in which ho hopes to reach
Hudson Bay. His future plans aro
detailed below. He looks thoroughly
in eartiest, and talks like a man with a
great weight on his mind. Mr. Bonnet, of the New York Herald, and Mr.
Erastus Wiman, have provided tho explorer! with ample funds, and many of
the leading firms in America have liberally contributed the necessary supplies. All arrangements for the jour-
ney are, thoroughly prepared, except a
few stores which will be obtained in
Winnipeg. They Will go by steumer
from Winnipeg to the head of Lake
(Winnipeg, and thence. to Norway
: Howe, near'the source of the Kelson
River. They Will go down the Nelson
Rive* withitne assistance of the Hudson Bay people to Fort York, which
will occupy ten days. They will there
meet Esquimaux and ho hopes some of
the people ho knew before, especially
' one.of flu former guides and hunters
•Who was with him during an anxious
poriod. -Their supplies could not be
obtained* and for days th6*y were ac- J
tually starving before the ship arrived.i
NATIVES ARE FAMILIAtt
with the coast as far as Capo Sabine,
where Groely's starvation camp was
found. Arrangements will be made
to liave a provision depot tliere next
year. They will probably stay there
during the -winter and then push on to
Fort Conger, in Lady Franklin's Bay,
which was Lieutenant Groely's most
northern station, and is situated in
latitude 81° 45\ They will then make
a dash for the Pole in sledges, travelling with the natives all tho time, i
The colonel has had fivo years' experience in tho Arctic regions of North
America and Nortii Asia, and is perfectly familiar with the language and
customs of the natives. Thc colonol
will, carefully survey the country with
respeotto the proposed short lino from
Manitoba to England via Hudson Bay.
Colonel Gildor is not a crank. Rather
is he a man possessed with that consuming restlessness whicli throe centuries drove bold spirits into all the
unknown nooks of tho world, seeking
new lands or eldorado. He is a newspaper man, backed in his present, as
in former ventures, by tho iprostigo
and treasure of tho New York Herald,
For that paper he accompanied two
arctic expeditions—that of Schwatka,
and the "Jeannette" relief party led
by Rogers. In the interests of tlie
same paper ho described tho ravages of
the cholera in France, and tho ruin
made by the earthquakes in Spain.
With Lieutenant Schwatka he spent
three years in
THE ARCTIC! R*feuIONB
and in that, timo made himself thoroughly familiar with the peculiar difficulties of northern exploration. He
also learned the Eskimo language thoroughly, and succeeded in establishing
entirely friendly relations i with tlie
peoplo of the region. On these things
the success of his present attempt will
javgoly depend. HiB plan is to perforin
tlie various stages of the latter part of
his journey with the assistance of the
various E&quimo tribes. Theso are
not expected to turn tq and help out
* of pure love. Colonel Gilder carries
with him a storo of the articles which
lio knows are, in those ice-bound countries, most coveted, viz., arms and ammunition, and various implements
useful in thc chase or household. In
return for these, he feels sure the, natives will convey him to tho much
sought-after crown of the earth. He
carries next to no provisions. Extraordinary as it appeai-s, it is a wcll-
authbnweated fact that tho Arctic seas
teem with animal life. With the aid
of his native allies, tho explorer ex-
peota to support his party on giuno
until the game limit is roached. Boyond that he will depend upon tho
stores cached by his predecessors. At
Fort Conger, the northernmost point
reached by whito men, less than 400
miles from tlie pole, there lie, safely
hidden at presont, provisions for
twenty-five meii for a year. Supplies,
therefore, give tlw? gallant explorer
little concern. Nor has he much more
' uneasiness about his prospects of securing natives to bring him to his journey's end, for, in all probability, some
of thom have unwittingly been thero.
At any rate, as near to the pole as
civilized mon' have gone, they havo
found traces of Esquiino in tho round
circles of stones, used for securing the
lowor ends of tho tents carried about
on hunting expeditions. To tlio technically unlearned the sehome looks
feasible enough, and it has received
the endorsement of high authorities,
including Sergeant Brainerd, of the
Grteely expedition, who is himself
shortly to return to the frozen country
on discovery bent. If Col. Gilder does
reach the polo he is determined that
his story of success shall be bolioved.
It is probably to this ond that ho has
associated with Min Mr. W. R. Griffith, a graduate of Cornell University,
who has hitherto dono most of his
travelling in tho tropical regions of j
Africa, but is, nevertheless, cftger to
brave the other climatic extreme.
Colonel Gilder is wise in Ins generation, he
TAKES NO LIQUOR WITH HIM
beyond the verge of civilization; not
becauso he is a teototaller, but" so that
his indigenous northorn friends may
not be tempted'to possess themiolvos
of the stock, and thereby lose their
heads. Colonel Gilder himself does
uot propose to pass any length of time
in gathering any scientific data. Frnm
his experience he believes it possible
for him to plant his foot right-ovev tho
spot where the pole should stick out.
His expedition, wliich in going and returning will occupy throe yoars, is undertaken solely to demonstrate tlie
truth of his belief. Once ho gets
thore, others will not bo long iu fid-
lowing. He is the more confident of
success because his project avoids the
mistakes mado by other sockets. • It
was upon their own resources that liis
predecessors relied; he moans to de-
pond >,npou tho skill of the natives,
in the'management of whom ho expects to find scope for all his tact and
energy, leaving natural obstacles to
be overcome by. tlieir perseverance,
stimulated by tho hope of a largo
reward.
BIClliCO.
Wholesale nnrl Retail i
•DRUG GISTS!
New Westminster, B. 0.
mlilOtc
THE CELEBRATED
WHITE
Sewing Machine!
Absolutely Pure.
This powder never varies.
