The Hon. Theo. Davie has promised
to be present. An invitation will bo extended to the Opposition members to attend,
when they will also have an opportunity to
address the meeting. As will be seen in our
Wellington column meetings will he held in
that placo and at Englishman's River school
house at an early date.
GREA T STRIKE THREA TENED.
It was reported iu the despatches last
week that the Uo*ted S'utes Miners'Convention had ou Wednesday resolved on a
general strike, to commence on the 21st
instant. It is claim d that in this strike
over 200.CD0 men will cease work, and that
double thut number in associated industries
will be affected. The association, it is said,
controls all the labor engaged in mining
bituminous coal iu the United States, and
covers the Slates of Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Iowa,
Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. There is
no doubt that the coal miners in all the
states named above have been in a very discontented condition for many months past,
on account of the low rate of wages paid by
mine owners in the United States at present,
but it may well be doubted that the present
is a good time to order a strike of the
proportions described above, when it is
notorious that thousands of men are idle
and oannot procure work at any wages. At
all events if this strike is oarried out it will
enhance to an enormous degree the existing
misery aud destitution of the working
classes fn the United States, and since coal
ia a vital necessity of industry in this age of
team, will indefinitely postpone the return
of more prosperous times. The proposed
strike resembles the recent great strike of
eoal miners in England, and if it is not prevented will be sure to be attended with
similar distress and loss, and no class will
suffer more than the miners themselves and
those depending on them, or will lose more.
It is alao to be feared that suoh a strike
would be attended with much rioting, blood,
shed, loss of life, and destruction of property. On every account it ia to be earnestly hoped that it will not take plaoe.
These inoluded a report on the Vancouver-
service, and two others on the aubject of the
proposed Pacific oable. A second meeting
waB held on the 7th of March, when the following resolution was presented and read
by the president:
" That considering the important interests
" both national and commercial, in the
" establishment of a Pacific cable, the repre-
" sentatives at this conference of the colonies
" interested recommend their jespeotive
*' Governments to consider the desirability
" of entering into a guarantee with the other
" countries interested for a period not ex-
" ceeding 14 yeais to secure interest at 4
" per ceut on capital not exceeding 1,800,
" 000 to any company undertaking to lay a
" cable, the tariff not to exceed 3s. a word
" for ordinary telegrams, 2s. for Govern-
" ment telegrams, and Is. 6d. for preBB
" despatches between Great Britain and the
" colonies; that the Uuited K'ngdom be
" asked to join the guarantee; the routes to
" be either of the following: (A) Brisbane to
" Ahipara Bay (New Zealand), Ahipara Bay
" to Suva, Suva to Apia, Apia to Fanning
" Islands, Fanning Islands to Sandwich
" Islands, Sandwich Islands to Vancouver;
" (B), from Ahipara Bay (New Zealand), to
" Suva, Suva to Apia, Apia to Fanning
" Islands, Fanning Islands to Sandwich
" Islands, Sandwich Islands to Vancouver."
It was carried on motion that the tariff
committee consider the shares of the subsidies and guarantees to be borne by the
colonies and Great Britain, and that conditions be settled for fresh tenders for the
federal mail service. On March 8th the
debate on the president's resolution was resumed, and an amendment recommending
an alternative route proposed as follows: A
direct route from Bundaberg lo Fiji, and an
alternative route from Brisbane, touching at
Ahipara Bay, thence* to Fiji via Samoa, then
Fanning Wands, Honolulu, Vancouver. A
recommendation waa adopted that in view
of the approaching expiration of the federal
mail contract, tenders be called for in
Great Kritain and Australia fur a weekly
service for a period of seven yeara, time
thirty days, Brindiai or NapleB to be the
European tei minus and Adelaide the Australian one After a short discussion the
conference adjourned till the 17th of March
at Aukland.
The foregoing clearly shows that the
Australian colonics are strongly interested,
not merely in postal matters, which, of
C'Uise, are considered by then of es-.eulial
imporiau* e, but also in >he pioj ct of laying
down a Pacific cable, whio.i shall b.* exulu-
aite*y under British ouirol, and that the
Australian colonics Ail* be prepared to bear
tloir fail* thare of lhe subsidies uocessary to
establish and in in aiu it. It also shows
thiu the route has been tubutantially agreed
upon. At every point in its mute, save
Honolulu alone, the cable will touch only
at British territoey. It will touch olso at
Samoa, but Stmoa will in all probability be
united shortly to Oue of the Australian
colonies. As for Honolulu wesuppuae there
is no help for it; the cable urns', touch there.
But thiB is all the more reason why step;
Bhould be lakeu by the British Government
to secii'i the establishment in Hawaii of an
independent and neutral government. If
this is not s ion doue the American party in
Hawaii will, sooner or later, succeed in
securing the annexation of the islands to the
United Statea.
