And the fifth\nis R. J. Johns, one of the worst Red\n agitators in Cnaada, a Winnipeg man\nTHK WINNIPEG UK VOLUTION- who in 1917 at a publie meeting of the\nMIX STItlhK Trades and Labor Council urged a\n general strike against conscription\n(From the Winnipeg Citizen, June 9.) and national registration.\nFor nearly a mouth, all eyes in\nCanada have been turned upon Winnipeg. For nearly a month the citizens\nof Winnipeg have been fighting whole-\nJohns is one of the prime organizers\nuf the Winnipeg strike and he also\nwent to Toronto and was largely in-\nstrumetal in bringing about the abor-\nheartedly and with a very generous tive general strike there. From the moment\nthat the general tie-up took place over\nu dispute between some metal workers\nand their employees, the general strike\nwaa recognized as an attempt at revolution\u00E2\u0080\u0094anil the citizens proceeded\nto combat it as such.\nThe revolution in Winnipeg was the\noutcome of a Bolshevist movement\nstarted at Calgary last March and\ndirected by the I.W.W. organization in\nthe United States. That convention\nelected a \"Red Five\" executive for\nCanada. One of these is Victor Mfdg-\nloy, of Vancouver, a notorious agitator, whose expulsion from Vancouver was demanded by returned soldiers last August wheu he and others\nled a one-day general strike in that\ncity in memoriam to a military slacker\nand defaulter who was shot while resisting arrest.\nThe second is W. A. Prltchard, of\nVancouver, >\ho participated in the\nsame unpatriotic escapade. The third\nis Joseph Knight, of Edmonton, one\nof the most notorious of Western agitators of the mining districts and a\nman who demands the release from\ninternment of men who were actively\nworking in Canada for the German\nupon himself the wrath of returned\nmen both over the conscription issue\nand latterly, when returned soldiers\nwent oir a rampage against a Bolshevist meeting which sent greetings to\nthe Soviet government of Russia, and\n'the Spartacans in Germany..\nF. J. Dixon, a soap-box orator who\nis a member of the Legislature, hail\nto flee for his life and was battered by\nreturned soldiers when he addressed a\nmeeting in the Market Square In 1917,\ncounselling everybody to burn their\nregistration cards and to resist conscription. In so urging, the Chicago\nI Tribune is advocating tlie spread of\ni the \"Citizens' Committee\" idea, as it\nI ls In Winnipeg, throughout the United\ni States. The advice is good for the\n| whole of Canada. The Chicago Tri-\ni bune says:\n| \"America has a fair share of fan-\n] atics and Inflamed theorists and of lg-\ni norant aliens who have no roots in\n| American life. The latter are our pun-\ni lshment for our lack of foresight and\nI civic intelligence. Together they are\nI capable of grave disturbances at this\n! time.\n\"The strike in Canada is worthy of\nI serious thought and more\u00E2\u0080\u0094of serious\nj action In this country. In a most un-\nI expected place what seems to be an\nattempt at Industrial revolution took\n; place, and Its effects have spread\nwider than could have heen believed.\nThe ostensible issues are a forty-four\nweek and the recognition of collective\nbargaining. But the real Issue, at\nleast In Winnipeg, If reports are accurate, Is recognition not of collective\nbargaining, but of a Soviet control of\nindustries.\n\"That Is, Winnipeg unions, having\nformed a central body composed of\nrepresentatives of all the local employees, demand that lt shall be recognized by all the employers and by\nthe community. This far transcends\ncollective bargaining and runs counter to the legitimate trade union Inlo\nlocals and internationals.
