Within a\ndistance of three quarters uf a mile\nfrom tbe dour uf ibis hotel thero arc\nline producing eoal mines. Tlie\ntiuiiii entrance to the Frank mine is\nthree quarters ol a mile distant, the\nUellovuo mine is only half a mile\nii wa y, t in- Maple I a-af lies three-\nquarters of a mile to the west, the\nLeitcb collieries three quarters of a\nmile to the east, and the Hillcrcst\nmine is within half a mile. The\nllillcreast mines, ol whieh Mr. Hill\nis managing director, are producing\n700 tons of coal per day. This coal\nis of exceptionally good quality as a\nsteam coal, and the 0, P. Connolly, widow of the late Rev. Daniel\nConnolly, and mother of Dr. Con-\nwas stricken by paralysis\nmi Sunday and from that time there\nwas no hope of saving her life, though\neverything was done tbat medical\nscience and tender nursing could do.\nMrs. Connolly was born at L'Orlgnal\nOntario, sixty-eight years ago. As a young man lie came\nwest with his brother, George, and\nafter a couple of years dim. to Nelson. That was in 1801 and for the\nremaining 10 years of his life be w.is\na resident of Nelson. After coming here James Neclands was lor\nsome time engaged with his brother\nin running a photograph gallery and\nin the early days started the first\ncigar factory in the Kootenays. McLEAN'S FATHER\nDuncan McLean, of the city police\nforce, received word this week of the\ndeath of his father, Hector Mavne\nMcLean, at Ottawa. The Herald\nvoices the sentiments of the many\nfriends of Mr. McLean in extending\nsympathy to him iu hi;; loss.
