Development Progressing.\nThe preliminary work of the\nsurveyors for the new railroad\nup the Elk river is making good\nprogress. The locators that\nstarted from a point on the C. P.\nR. near the rock quarry, have\npassed the junction of the swift\nCurrent and the Elk. The surveyors staking the grade moved\nfrom their former camp on Michel\nprairie to Graves' prairie about\ntwo miles south of Swift Current,\nSeveral miles of grade stakes\nhave been set. In conversation\nwith one of the engineers, your\ncorrespondend gleaned the facts\nthat the grade to the junction of\nthe Elk und swift current is less\nthan one-half per cent, which is\nconsiderably less than any grade\non the C. P. R. on the mountain\ndivision of the Crow's Nest or\nthe main line. It had been the\nintention of the company to run\nalong the Elk for ubout 8 miles\nabove tbe junction of the two\nrivurs, but the grade across the\nmountain from the Elk to the\nFording river is too great. In\nconsequence it is probable that\nthe road will follow Swift\nCurrent to the Junction of Ford\ning river, tbence along that\nstream to the coal fields of the\nImperial Coal and Coke company\nThe outfit working north on\nthe Fording river from the main\ncamp of the Imperial Co. is also\nmaking good progress.
