Parts of
this old thrilling highway may still be seen from the main
line of Canadian Pacific in the Fraser Canyon near Chaumox.
News of gold on the Fraser, reached the' - outside'' in February
1858. Gold-seekers rushed into New Caledonia, and in
September 10,000 men were working the river-bars near
Yale. The day of the fur-trader was definitely over, and
New Caledonia became the Crown Colony of British Columbia
on November 19th. Another year, and prospectors had
clambered up the precipitous canyon of the Fraser as far as
Fort George. By 1861, the Cariboo gold-rush was on.
Miners swarmed in like ants, and roaring, lawless camps
sprung up almost overnight at the end of a terrible trail—
600 miles of peaks, cliffs and wild rapids in length. To
bring law and order to these communities, Governor Douglas
built the Cariboo Road.
It was completed in 1865, one of the finest roads then built.
Fourteen feet wide, it ran up the Fraser Canyon from Yale
to Ashcroft, and then north through the jumbled peaks to
Barkerville in the heart of the Cariboo. All the gold-mad
world travelled it in the sixties and seventies. Uncounted
millions in gold went out to Yale, over its spidery bridges.
Stages thundered down its breathless descents and went
spinning around its hairpin bends, hundreds of feet above
the tumbling waters. In and out, day and night, went lazy
mule-trains, teams of plodding oxen, in long ambling lines,
passing one another on peaks, in the echoing canyon, on the
sheer cliffs, all coming and going to the magic of the gold of
Cariboo.
The Cariboo Road was to British Columbia of those early
days what the Canadian Pacific was to be to Canada in later
years, the main artery of travel and commerce and an actual
bond of union."@en .
